Is Economy Bookings Legit? Car Hire Refunds and Rules (2026)

Yes, Economy Bookings is a real booking platform run by Booking Group Corporation Ltd, with a registered address in Latvia. It compares car hire offers and acts as an intermediary, so your contract is with the rental supplier. The catch is in the terms: refunds, deposits and refused pickups follow strict rules.

Booking a hire car from a site you've never used before is nerve-wracking, especially when the price looks low. I've read through Economy Bookings' terms and its own site so I can tell you what it claims to be, how it handles refunds and what can go wrong at the rental desk.

Who is behind Economy Bookings

The site's footer says it's part of Booking Group Corporation Ltd, and the terms name that company as the one behind EconomyBookings, with a registered address in Latvia. So there's a named company and a stated address, which is more than you can say for the throwaway sites that copy this kind of business.

Economy Bookings describes itself as an online car rental platform that compares offers from rental suppliers. It doesn't own the vehicles. That matters, because it changes who you deal with when something goes wrong.

Why Economy Bookings says it's only an intermediary

The terms are clear on this point: they say Economy Bookings acts solely as an intermediary between you and the relevant service provider, and that your contract is with the service provider. In practice, you book through the platform, but the company handing you the keys isn't the platform, it's the rental supplier.

That's normal for comparison and broker sites, but it explains a lot of the complaints people have with this type of service. The platform can sort out the booking, while the desk makes the call on the day.

Cancellations and refunds under Economy Bookings' terms

This is where I'd read slowly, and I'd keep a copy of whatever you're shown. The terms say car rentals cancelled more than 48 hours before pick-up are eligible for a full refund. Cancel closer to pick-up and you generally get nothing back, unless you bought the Last Minute Cancellation add-on.

  • Cancel through your account, not by contacting the supplier directly. The terms say requests made straight to the supplier fall outside the refund policy.
  • Refunds are credited to your E-Wallet as BookingCredit by default, rather than to your card.
  • Refund requests must be made within six months of the cancellation date.
  • A Reservation Fee, where you choose Reserve Now, is a separate service fee that the terms say is non-refundable in all circumstances.

The BookingCredit point is the one that surprises people, and it's easy to miss. If you wanted your money back on your card, check the options on the cancellation screen before you confirm.

Paying, deposits and what happens at the rental desk

According to the terms, you must present a physical credit card in the main driver's name at the rental desk. The deposit is taken as a card pre-authorisation, which the terms say is typically released within 30 days after the rental period ends. Debit, prepaid and neobank cards are generally not accepted unless the rental conditions say otherwise.

This is the most common way a booking goes wrong. A supplier can refuse to hand over the car if the card, documents or driver details don't match. The terms say Economy Bookings won't issue a refund and accepts no liability if the provider refuses to release the vehicle, with listed grounds including missing documents or card. Sort out your card and licence before you book, because you won't be able to fix it at the counter.

What I checkedWhat Economy Bookings' own pages say
Who runs it?Booking Group Corporation Ltd, with a registered address in Latvia
Does it own the cars? No, it compares offers from rental suppliers
Who is my contract with? The service provider, not Economy Bookings
Free cancellation?A full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before pick-up
Where do refunds go?Your E-Wallet as BookingCredit by default
Card needed at the desk?A physical credit card in the main driver's name

What if the supplier cancels or won't hand over the car

The terms say that in rare cases a service provider may deny service at its own discretion, and Economy Bookings will assist to the extent possible. They don't clearly spell out what happens if a supplier cancels a booking itself beyond those general provisions, so keep your voucher and take screenshots of everything. If you also booked flights, my guide to flight cancellation compensation deadlines covers a different set of rights, because airlines are covered by separate rules.

Complaints and support

The terms say complaints go through the Economy Bookings Help Center within 28 business days of the scheduled service completion. Complaints about the provider's service should go to the provider directly. That's a short window, so don't leave a problem sitting, and don't assume you'll be able to sort it out later.

Fake booking sites and scam messages

Hire car searches attract copycats, and it's easy to click the wrong result when you're in a rush. A few habits help:

  • Book only on the address you've typed yourself, not from an advert or a message link.
  • Be wary of anyone asking you to pay by bank transfer, gift card or a private payment link outside the checkout.
  • Check that the voucher lists the supplier's contact details, which Economy Bookings says it includes.
  • Be careful with review quotes. My guides on spotting fake reviews and which review sites to trust show how to read them critically.

My verdict on Economy Bookings

Economy Bookings is a real company with a named owner, a stated address and published terms, so it isn't a scam. But it's an intermediary with rules that bite: refunds come as credit by default, short-notice cancellations get nothing back and a refused pickup is your problem, not theirs. Read the terms, bring the right card and licence and keep every voucher.
