Is Chumba Casino Legit? Sweeps Coins, Prizes and Rules (2026)

Chumba Casino is a real social sweepstakes casino owned and operated by VGW Malta Limited, part of the VGW group. Its terms say Sweeps Coins can be redeemed for cash or gift card prizes, and Gold Coins can't. The catch: you must be over 21, a long list of states can't enter the sweepstakes, Gold Coin purchases aren't refundable, and New York's Attorney General has taken action against VGW.

Chumba Casino has been around long enough that most people have seen the adverts, and that's exactly why the question keeps landing in my inbox. Is it a casino or a game? Can you lose real money? I've gone through Chumba's own terms and conditions, plus what state officials have published about its owner, VGW, so you can see where the line sits.

Who owns Chumba Casino

The footer on Chumba's site says it's owned and operated by VGW Malta Limited, and that the sweepstakes promotions and prizes are run by VGW Games Limited. Both are part of the VGW group, which Michigan's gaming regulator describes as headquartered in Australia, with a US company, VGW LuckyLand, Inc., based in San Francisco. VGW also runs Global Poker and Luckyland Slots.

So this isn't a fly-by-night site with no name behind it. There's a corporate group, published terms, and a track record that regulators have looked at closely, which I cover further down.

Gold Coins versus Sweeps Coins at Chumba

The terms open with a striking line: the games and platform don't offer real money gambling, and no actual money is required to play. The way it squares that with paying out prizes is the two-coin system.

  • Gold Coins are for Standard Play. The terms say they have no monetary value and can't under any circumstance be redeemed for prizes. You can win more of them or buy more.
  • Sweeps Coins are described as sweepstakes entries. Chumba says it may give them free when you sign up, as a bonus when you buy Gold Coins, or through its free alternative methods of entry. The terms are blunt: you can't purchase Sweeps Coins.

In practice, the bonus Sweeps Coins that come with a Gold Coin purchase are how many players top up. That's worth being clear-eyed about, because the purchase is real money even if the coins are labelled as free.

Redeeming prizes from Chumba Casino

When you want to cash in, you press the Redeem button. The terms say gift card prizes go to the email address on your account, and cash prizes are paid back to the payment method you used to buy Gold Coins, or to a bank account you nominate if that isn't possible.

There are conditions. Chumba reserves the right to charge fees for processing redemptions and to set a minimum redemption threshold of SC100. Larger redemptions bring extra checks: the terms mention additional verification for any single or combined redemption above 2,000 US dollars, which can include copies of ID, bills or lease documents. You're also only allowed one account, so don't open a second one to chase a welcome offer.

Chumba Casino's age rule and excluded states

The terms say you must be over 21, or older if the age of majority where you live is higher. Location rules come in two layers, and this is where people get caught out.

For any play at all, the terms list an Excluded Territory: Washington, Michigan, Montana, Connecticut, Nevada and Delaware, plus US territories and anywhere outside the United States. For the sweepstakes side, the list is longer. Only players in the United States outside these states can enter:

Can't enter the Chumba sweepstakesAlso blocked from all play
California, Idaho, Louisiana, MississippiNo
New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, West VirginiaNo
Connecticut, Delaware, MichiganYes
Montana, Nevada, WashingtonYes

Lists like this change as states pass new laws, so read the current terms and Sweeps Rules on Chumba's site before you start.

What New York and Michigan officials have said about VGW

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that VGW, as the operator of Chumba Casino, Global Poker and Luckyland Slots, will pay 8 million US dollars including penalties. Her office says the operators ended the sale of sweepstakes coins in New York, and that Governor Hochul has since signed the state's ban on sweepstakes casinos into law. New York is now on Chumba's own sweepstakes exclusion list.

Earlier, the Michigan Gaming Control Board said it had sent a cease-and-desist letter to VGW LuckyLand, Inc., alleging illegal gambling through an internet game where players wager something of monetary value. The board said VGW had taken steps to stop Michigan residents gambling on its websites, and Michigan is in Chumba's Excluded Territory. I'm reporting what officials have published, not giving a legal opinion: check your own state's rules.

Chumba Casino rules that can cost you

A few lines in the terms deserve more attention than they get:

  • Gold Coin purchases are final. The terms say they're not refundable, transferable or exchangeable.
  • Sweeps Coins expire. They're only valid for sixty (60) days from the date you last logged in, then they vanish automatically.
  • Closing an account can mean forfeiting Sweeps Coins, and Chumba can close or restrict accounts in a range of situations set out in the terms.
  • The terms include an arbitration clause with a class action waiver, so read that section if disputes worry you.

Playing Chumba Casino responsibly

These are slot-style and casino-style games of chance. Spend money on Gold Coins and you can lose all of it, and no strategy changes that. Treat any purchase as the cost of entertainment, decide your limit before you log in, and never buy more to win back what's gone.

Chumba's terms say you can ask to take a break, self-exclude or permanently close your account, and you can set limits on Gold Coin purchases, the amount of Sweeps Coins you play or your time logged in. Use them early rather than late. If you enjoy the strategy side of casino games, my piece on what the live casino experience is like for players looks at why the format is so absorbing.

And if you were hoping Chumba could be a side income, it can't. For something that builds over time, try these side hustle ideas that fit alongside a business instead.

Chumba Casino copycats and fake offers

Chumba's terms describe redemptions going to your own payment method or account email. They don't describe paying a stranger to release a prize, buying Sweeps Coins from someone on social media, or handing over your login so an agent can play for you. Sweeps Coins can't be bought at all, according to the terms, so anyone selling them isn't Chumba. Use the official site or app only.
