Canva is free for school students when their teacher invites them to Canva Education, which gives eligible K-12 teachers and students premium features at no charge. University students get premium Canva only if their institution has Canva Campus. Anyone else can still use the standard free Canva plan.
This one causes a lot of confusion, because the answer depends on which kind of student you happen to be and who's doing the signing up. A Year 9 pupil, a college fresher and an adult on an evening course all get a different deal. Here's how it works, based on Canva's own help centre.
Who gets Canva free, at a glance
| Your situation | What you get | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
| K-12 (primary or secondary) student | Canva Education, with premium features | Your teacher or school invites you |
| K-12 teacher | Canva Education, with premium features | Verify as an eligible teacher |
| University or college student | Premium Canva only through Canva Campus | Your institution has to set it up |
| Anyone else | The standard free Canva plan | Sign up with any email |
School students: free through your teacher
Canva Education is the big one. Canva says it's free for eligible teachers and students, works anywhere in the world and includes its premium features. The key detail is that students don't apply on their own. A teacher, or the school, sets up a class and invites them.
Teachers can invite students by email, with a link, with an invite code for pupils who don't have email, or by importing a Google Classroom class. Canva also notes that students under 13 need parental consent, and schools are responsible for checking how that works locally.
Who counts as an eligible teacher
According to Canva, you need to be currently active in a role such as:
- A certified K-12 (primary or secondary) teacher at a formally accredited school, currently teaching
- A K-12 school librarian
- A K-12 learning support assistant or teacher
- A K-12 curriculum specialist
- A teacher at a technical or vocational school serving primary or secondary students
Schools, school districts and departments of education can also sign up as organisations.
University students: only through Canva Campus
Here's the catch most people miss. Canva Education is for K-12. Higher education is a separate product called Canva Campus, and it's arranged by the institution, not the student. Canva explains that universities start on Canva Business and move to Canva Campus once they hit a licence threshold based on their full-time student numbers. At that point, premium accounts are unlocked for all students at no extra charge to them.
So if you're at university, check your student portal or ask your IT team whether you already have access. If your institution doesn't have Canva Campus, you can't switch it on yourself by verifying a student email.
What if you don't qualify?
You can still use Canva's standard free plan, which covers a huge amount: templates, the editor, presentations, documents and social graphics. The main limits are premium content and some advanced downloads. For most coursework, presentations and club posters, free Canva is plenty.
Before you graduate, save your work
This is the bit students regret skipping. Canva warns that graduating students may lose their school email and, with it, their free education or campus account. To keep your designs editable:
- Create a personal Canva account if you don't have one.
- In your school account, share each design with your personal email and choose Can edit.
- Log in to your personal account and open the shared design.
- Go to File and select Make a copy.
Do this for your portfolio pieces well before your account closes. If you're heading into job hunting, my walkthrough of an ATS-friendly resume template explains why a plain CV often beats a fancy Canva one.

What students can do with Canva Education
Once you're in a teacher's class, the premium features open up for schoolwork. Canva lists thousands of education templates for different subjects and grades, plus the ability to share work with your teacher, get feedback in real time and submit assignments. It also plugs into the learning platforms many schools already use, including Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Canvas, Schoology, Moodle, Blackboard and D2L.
That makes it handy for presentations, science posters, history timelines, revision cards and group projects where several people need to edit the same design. Just remember the account belongs to the school, so treat it like a school laptop and keep personal projects elsewhere.
Tips for teachers setting it up
- Use invite codes for younger pupils without email addresses.
- Import your Google Classroom class to save typing out names.
- Sort parental consent before inviting under-13s.
- Use Canva's education templates as starting points for worksheets and lesson slides.
My verdict
If you're a school student, Canva is free with premium features as soon as your teacher invites you. If you're at university, it's free only when your institution has Canva Campus, otherwise use the standard free plan, which is more than enough for most projects. Whichever group you're in, copy your designs to a personal account before you leave. Good design skills travel with you, and as I argue in why education is key to success, the habits you build now keep rewarding you for years.
