Instagram sleep mode automatically pauses your notifications, sends an auto-reply to anyone who messages you, and swaps your green active dot for a moon icon during the hours you choose. You turn it on or off in Settings under Time management, then Sleep mode.
If you're a teen, you didn't choose it: Instagram switches Teen Accounts into sleep mode from 10PM to 7AM every day by default.
Below is exactly what sleep mode does, how to set it, what other people see, and how the teen version differs. Everything comes from Instagram's Help Center, read in October 2026.
What Instagram sleep mode does
- Pauses notifications during the time periods you pick.
- Auto-replies to messages, explaining that you won't be notified about them during this time.
- Changes your activity status to "In sleep mode", and your green active dot becomes a moon icon.
- Reminds you to close Instagram if you open it during sleep mode.
- Gives you a summary of new notifications and messages when sleep mode ends.
Think of it as a do-not-disturb setting that lives inside Instagram, so it works even if you forget to silence your phone. What it doesn't do, for most people, is lock you out. Instagram says you can still use the app and send and receive messages while you're in sleep mode. It's a nudge, not a wall.
How to turn sleep mode on or off
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- In Settings and activity, tap Time management.
- Tap Sleep mode.
- Tap the toggle to turn it on or off.
- If it's on, choose the days and times you want it to run.
- Tap the arrow in the top left. Your changes save automatically.
There's one limit worth knowing: you can set sleep mode for up to 24 hours each day. If you want a longer break from notifications, Instagram points you to its separate option to pause notifications instead.
What other people see
| Who | What they notice during your sleep mode |
|---|---|
| Anyone who messages you | An auto-reply saying you won't be notified about their message during this time |
| People who can see your activity status | "In sleep mode" and a moon icon instead of the green dot |
| Everyone else | Nothing different. Your posts, stories and profile look the same |
If you'd rather nobody sees when you're active at all, sleep mode or not, my guide to turning off activity status on Instagram covers that setting.
Sleep mode on Teen Accounts
For Teen Accounts, sleep mode isn't optional by default. Instagram's Teen Account settings include:
- Sleep mode turned on from 10PM to 7AM every day.
- Notifications muted and auto-replies to messages switched on during that time.
- A reminder to close Instagram during sleep mode.
- A separate daily reminder to close the app after a total of 60 minutes on Instagram that day.
A parent or guardian who supervises the account can also choose to block Instagram during sleep mode. That's the one case where sleep mode does stop the app being used, rather than just quietening it.
Teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's permission to make Teen Account settings less protective. Teens aged 16 and 17 can change them themselves, unless their account is supervised. More on how supervision works in my guide to Instagram parental controls.
Sleep mode vs pausing notifications vs muting
| Tool | What it's for | Time limit |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep mode | A regular quiet window with auto-replies and a moon icon | Up to 24 hours each day, on the days you choose |
| Pausing notifications | A one-off break from all notifications | Instagram offers this for longer breaks than sleep mode allows |
Sleep mode is the one that tells people why you haven't replied. That auto-reply is what makes it useful for business accounts as well as personal ones.
Using sleep mode for a business account
I'd argue sleep mode is underused by small businesses. Set it for your evenings and weekends and the auto-reply manages expectations for you, so a customer who messages at 11PM knows they won't hear back until morning. You stay reachable, you don't feel obliged to answer instantly, and the summary when sleep mode ends means nothing slips through.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
It also helps with boundaries. When the moon icon is showing, people can see you're offline on purpose, not ignoring them, which takes the sting out of a slow reply. Just remember the 24-hour cap per day. It's built for nightly downtime, not a fortnight away. For holidays, a pinned story or an updated bio does that job better.
If sleep mode isn't working
- Check the days. Sleep mode only runs on the days you've ticked.
- Check the times. If the window has already ended, you'll see the summary rather than the moon.
- Update the app if you can't find Time management in Settings and activity.
- Teens: if you can't turn it off, your account settings may need a parent's permission.
My take
Turn it on. It's one of the few Instagram settings that's good for your evenings and makes you look more professional at the same time, because nobody's left wondering why you've gone quiet.
