To preview an Instagram ad, open it in Meta Ads Manager on desktop and look at the Ad preview panel on the right, then choose the Instagram placements you want to check. Click Share to send a preview link to a client, or Advanced preview to see every placement side by side.
Every spec and rule on this page comes from Meta's own Ads Guide and Business Help Center, read as of October 2026. The steps are for Ads Manager on a computer, which is where Meta puts the full preview tools.
Here's the catch that wastes people's time: the Preview on device option sends a notification to your Facebook profile, and Meta says it only works on iOS. It isn't available for Android or on Instagram. So if you're waiting for an Instagram notification to see your ad on your phone, it won't arrive.
The preview tools and what each one does
| Option | Where you find it | What it does | Works for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ad preview | Right side of the ad while you build it | Shows how the ad may look in one format or placement at a time | Published and unpublished ads |
| Share previews | Share button | Creates a link colleagues or clients can open | Published and unpublished ads |
| Preview on device | Share button | Sends a notification to your Facebook profile on your phone | iPhone only, not Android, not Instagram |
| See post | Share button | Opens the unpublished ad in a new browser tab | Unpublished ads only |
| View on Facebook | Share button | Puts your published ad in your own Facebook Feed for 10 minutes | Published ads |
| Advanced preview | Advanced preview button | Shows every placement, plus Advantage+ creative variations | Ads you're building or editing |
How to preview your ad on every Instagram placement
- In Ads Manager, tick the box next to the ad at the Ad level. It doesn't need to be active.
- Click Edit to open the side pane.
- Look through the previews for each placement. Click any placement to see it bigger.
- If a placement shows a warning icon, select it and click Edit placement to fix it.
- To change the text, media or link for one placement only, click Edit above that preview.
- Click Publish when you're happy.
Meta notes these steps don't work for ads made from posts, collection ads, ads in a split test or when you edit several ads at once.
Sharing a preview with a client
This is the most useful option if anyone else has to approve your ads. Click Share, copy the link and send it to the person who needs to sign off. For an unpublished ad, you choose whether the link stays live for 30 or 60 days, and any changes you make show up in that same link until the ad is published. Once it goes live, the link stops working.
For a published ad, people who open your link will see a request to show the ad in all selected placements for 24 hours. One limit: you can't share the variations Meta creates with creative enhancements. The shared preview only includes your original creative and one possible variation.
Reading the Advanced preview
Advanced preview has two tabs. The Placements tab shows how your ad may look in each placement, and some cards carry blue labels naming a creative enhancement Meta may apply. Hover over a label to see why Meta recommends it, and to edit or switch it off. The Advantage+ creative tab shows one variation for each enhancement, with a switch on every card. If you don't like what an enhancement does to an unpublished ad, turn it off there and that variation won't run.

What the preview won't show you
Meta is very clear that previews are examples, not a promise. The help page lists what you won't see:
- Every ad format, if you chose the Flexible format.
- Every phone or computer your ad may appear on.
- How people will tap or swipe through it.
- All the variations Advantage+ creative may make.
- Every text and media combination.
- Every product an Advantage+ catalog ad may show.
That's why I'd always check the safe zone as well as the preview. On Stories and Reels, Meta asks you to keep the top, bottom and side edges clear, and you can turn on the Safe zone guardrail in Ads Manager to see a yellow overlay on your creative. A preview that looks fine can still hide your headline behind the call-to-action button on a taller phone.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Does previewing an ad cost anything?
No. Meta says the ad you see in your Feed through a preview isn't misdelivery, and ad previews aren't paid impressions. You can preview as often as you like.
If you need a polished mockup for a pitch deck rather than a live preview, making a mockup in Meta Creative Hub is the better tool. And if your ad looks right but isn't getting seen, this guide to Instagram ads not delivering covers the usual causes.
My advice
Before any Instagram ad goes live, I'd check three things: the Stories and Reels previews, the safe zone overlay and one look on a real phone. The share link handles client sign-off, and it saves you sending screenshots back and forth. Ten minutes of checking is far cheaper than a week of spend on an ad with its offer cut off.

Frequently asked questions
How do I preview an Instagram ad before publishing?
Open the ad in Meta Ads Manager on desktop and use the Ad preview panel on the right, or click Advanced preview to see every placement side by side.
Can I preview my ad on my phone in Instagram?
Not through Instagram. Meta's Preview on device option sends a notification to your Facebook profile on iPhone only, and it isn't available on Android or Instagram.
How do I share an ad preview with a client?
Click Share and copy the link. For an unpublished ad you can make the link last 30 or 60 days, and it stops working once the ad is published.
Do ad previews count as paid impressions?
No. Meta says ad previews aren't paid impressions and the preview in your Feed isn't misdelivery.
Why does my live ad look different from the preview?
Meta says previews are only examples. Rendering can vary by device and format, and Advantage+ creative enhancements may change what people see.
