Instagram pays nothing for having 1 million followers in India, because Meta has no per-follower payment at any size. What a million followers gives you is access: Indian creators can use Gifts, badges once they pass 10,000 followers, Subscriptions if the option shows in their dashboard, and brand deals, which is where the serious income at this level comes from.
So if you've seen a figure in rupees attached to "1 million followers", treat it as somebody's guess. Meta doesn't publish one, and neither will I. What I can give you is the list of tools that are open to an Indian account at this size, what each one pays on, and the rules that quietly stop big accounts getting paid.

Why a million followers isn't a salary
Instagram's payout page lists exactly four tools that Meta pays out from: badges, bonuses, Gifts and Subscriptions. Not one of them pays you for a follower. Each pays on something your audience does: buying a badge on a live, sending a Gift on a reel, paying a monthly subscription, or hitting the targets in a bonus you've been invited to.
That changes how you should think about the number. A million followers is a very big shop window. It only turns into income when some of those people buy something, either from Meta's tools or from the brands who pay you to reach them.

Gifts need just 500 followers, so at a million that's never your blocker. The blockers are the rules in the next section. Badges are the tool that grows with you: Meta caps the payments from one supporter who buys multiple badges in a single live at $250, so at this size a big live pays through many supporters, not one generous fan.
Facebook is worth a look too. Meta lists India for Facebook Content Monetization, and the supported languages include Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Kannada and Malayalam alongside English. If you post reels in one of those languages, a Facebook presence is a second Meta income line that doesn't depend on Instagram's tools at all.
The rules that stop big Indian accounts getting paid
Large accounts lose access for reasons that have nothing to do with size. Instagram's Partner Monetization Policies are blunt about it:
- You must live in a country where the tool is available, and you can lose access if you move somewhere that isn't.
- You can only earn from your natural, authentic audience. Accounts can lose monetization if their audience is largely fake likes, follows or views.
- Coordinated sharing of content, often for payment, counts as artificially boosting views.
- Current politicians, candidates, parties and government bodies can't monetize at all.
If you bought followers on the way to a million, this is the bit that hurts. The tools look at the audience you have, not the number on your profile.
Where the real income at a million followers comes from
Brand partnerships. That's where I'd put most of the effort at this level, because no Meta tool pays on reach the way a brand does. Instagram requires every piece of branded content to carry the paid partnership label, including when a product is gifted to you for free, so set up branded content tools before your next deal. In the app, go to your profile, tap Menu, then Creator tools and controls, then Branded content, then Set up branded content tools.
Meta Creator Marketplace is the other door. Where it's available, you'll find it under Branded content in your professional dashboard. Each project shows the brand's description, how many reels, posts or stories they want, the posting date and the payment they're offering, marked as negotiable or fixed. Instagram says this feature may not be available to everyone yet, so check your own dashboard rather than assuming.
At a million followers, I'd treat the follower count as your rate card's headline and nothing more. Brands will ask for reach, saves and audience location from your insights, so keep a one-page media kit up to date.

Getting the money into your Indian bank account
None of this matters if your payout account isn't set up. Without one, Instagram lets you earn up to $500 per tool, with a maximum of $1,500 across 3 tools, and if you haven't added a payout account within 6 months you forfeit those earnings. At a million followers you can hit that ceiling fast, so do it today.
- Open your professional dashboard and go to Tools, then Payouts.
- Choose Individual if you don't have a registered business.
- Enter your legal first and last name exactly as it appears on your tax ID.
- Add your bank name, country, SWIFT code and account number.
- Pick a payout method, knowing that outside the US a wire transfer pays once your balance reaches $100 and other methods pay at $25.
Instagram pays most tools around the 21st of each month for the previous month's earnings. If you change your bank details, there's a 5-day hold, so make changes at least 10 days before a payment date.

A million followers in India is a serious asset, but it's an audience, not an income.
