InDesign Free Trial: 7 Days, One per Person, How to Cancel

Yes, Adobe gives you a 7-day free trial of InDesign, and it's the full version of the app with every feature. The catch is that it turns into a paid Creative Cloud membership on day 7 unless you cancel, and Adobe only allows one InDesign trial per person.

I get asked about this a lot by small business owners who need to lay out one brochure, one ebook or one menu and don't want a subscription. The trial can cover that job if you plan it. Here's exactly what Adobe's own trial and plans pages say, checked as of October 2026, so you know what you're signing up for before you hand over a card.

What the InDesign free trial includes

Adobe's trial page is clear that the trial isn't a cut-down demo. You get the full app with the latest updates, and Adobe says it works across desktop, web and mobile. That means you can open real client files, export print-ready PDFs and use every template you'd get as a paying member.

Trial detailWhat Adobe says
Length7 days from the moment you check out
VersionThe official full version with all features and updates
How manyOne 7-day InDesign trial per person
After day 7Converts to a paid Creative Cloud membership unless you cancel
Refund windowAn extra 14 days after the trial to cancel for a full refund
Card neededYes, there's no charge until the trial ends

The line most people miss is the refund window. Adobe says that if 7 days isn't enough to test everything, you still get an extra 14 days to cancel and receive a full refund. So in practice you've got a safety net, but I'd still treat day 7 as the real deadline and not rely on asking for your fee back.

You can't buy InDesign on its own forever

This surprises people who remember boxed software. Adobe's FAQ says InDesign is available only as part of a Creative Cloud membership. There's no one-off licence to buy. You choose a Single App plan with InDesign only, or a bigger plan with more apps.

Here are the plans Adobe lists on its InDesign compare page, as of October 2026, in the US prices shown there. All of them are annual plans billed monthly.

PlanPrice shownWhat's in it
InDesign (individuals)US$22.99/moInDesign, Adobe Express Premium, 100GB cloud storage, 25 monthly generative credits
Creative Cloud Pro (individuals)Regularly US$69.99/mo20+ apps including InDesign, 100GB storage, 4,000 monthly generative credits
Creative Cloud Pro (students and teachers)US$19.99/mo the first year, then US$39.99/moSame 20+ apps, eligibility check required
InDesign for teamsUS$37.99/mo per licenceInDesign plus business features
Creative Cloud Pro for teamsUS$99.99/mo per licence20+ apps plus business features

Prices change with promotions and by country, so check the plans page in your own region before you decide. The point for most of my readers is simpler: if you only need InDesign, the single app plan is the one the trial converts to, and it's the cheapest way to keep it.

How to start the trial without getting caught out

  1. Get your files ready first: text, images, logos and the page size you need. The clock starts when you check out, not when you open the app.
  2. Start the trial from Adobe's InDesign free trial page and sign in with your Adobe account.
  3. Add a card. Adobe won't charge it until the 7 days are up.
  4. Put a reminder in your calendar for day 6, not day 7, so time zones and billing times can't trip you up.
  5. Do the real job inside the 7 days and export everything you need as PDF, IDML or packaged files.
  6. Cancel before the trial ends if you don't want to keep paying (steps below).

How to cancel the InDesign free trial

Adobe's own steps are short. Go to your Adobe account page within 7 days of starting, find your plan name and click Manage Plans. Click Cancel Plan, give a reason, click Continue and follow the on-screen instructions until it confirms. I'd screenshot that confirmation page, because it's your proof if a charge appears anyway.

Is there any way to use InDesign for free after the trial?

Not from Adobe. Once your one trial is used, the official options are paid plans. Adobe does point people to free InDesign tutorials, which are worth working through during your trial so you don't waste the 7 days learning the basics.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If you need page layout regularly but can't justify a subscription, look at the alternatives to InDesign instead. Some are one-off purchases or free, and I've also covered whether Affinity is free. If you're weighing up the whole suite, my guide to every Creative Cloud plan breaks the bundles down.

My verdict

The InDesign free trial is worth it for a defined, short project. It's the full app, it's 7 days, and you've got a 14-day refund window behind it. Just remember you only get one, so don't start it on a whim. Prepare your content, block out the week, do the work and cancel on day 6 if you're not staying. If you design every month, the single app plan is the honest long-term answer; if it's once a year, a free or one-off alternative will serve you better.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the InDesign free trial?

Adobe's InDesign free trial lasts 7 days, starting when you check out. It's the full version of the app, and it converts to a paid Creative Cloud membership after 7 days unless you cancel.

Can I get the InDesign free trial twice?

No. Adobe says only one 7-day free trial of InDesign is available per person. After that, the official route is a paid Creative Cloud plan.

Do I need a card for the InDesign free trial?

Yes. Adobe takes payment details at checkout, but there's no charge until the free trial ends, and you can cancel up to 14 days after for a full refund.

Can I buy InDesign without a subscription?

No. Adobe's FAQ says InDesign is available only as part of a Creative Cloud membership, either as a Single App plan or inside a plan with more apps.

What happens to my files when the trial ends?

Your files stay wherever you saved them, but you'll need an active plan to keep editing them in InDesign. Export PDFs or IDML copies before you cancel so you can still use the work.
