Illustrator Free Trial: 7 Days, Then a 14-Day Refund Window

Adobe offers a 7-day free trial of Illustrator, one per person. It's the full version of the app on Mac, Windows and iPad, it starts when you check out, and it converts to a paid Creative Cloud plan automatically unless you cancel. Adobe adds an extra 14 days after the trial to cancel for a full refund.

So you've effectively got three weeks to decide, as long as you cancel within the right window. Illustrator isn't free beyond the trial: Adobe's own FAQ says it's available only as part of a Creative Cloud membership. Here's how the trial works, what it turns into, and where people get caught.

How the Illustrator trial works

StageWhat happens
Day 1Trial starts when you check out with a plan chosen
Days 1 to 7Full Illustrator with the latest features and updates
Day 8Trial ends and billing begins
Next 14 daysCancel for a full refund under Adobe's refund guarantee

Adobe says the trial works on macOS, Windows and iOS for iPad. Only one 7-day free trial of Illustrator is available per person.

How to start it

  1. Click the Free Trial button on Adobe's Illustrator page.
  2. Choose a plan and click continue.
  3. Create an account or sign in with your Adobe ID.
  4. Follow the steps to start your trial. You'll add a payment method at checkout.
  5. Download Illustrator.

Which plan the trial turns into

This is worth reading slowly. Adobe's Illustrator trial page lists two plans:

PlanPrice on Adobe's page (as of October 2026)What's included
Illustrator single appUS$22.99/mo, annual billed monthlyIllustrator, Adobe Express Premium, 100GB storage, 25 monthly generative credits
Creative Cloud ProUS$69.99/mo regularly, annual billed monthly20+ apps, 4,000 monthly generative credits, 100GB storage

Adobe's page also shows a new-subscriber offer on Creative Cloud Pro of US$34.99/mo for the first 3 months. Here's the catch: the same trial FAQ says in one answer that the trial converts to a Creative Cloud Single App membership and in another that it converts to Creative Cloud Pro. In practice, the plan you pick at checkout is the one you'll be billed for, so check it on the order summary before you confirm.

How to cancel the trial

  1. Go to your Adobe account page within 7 days of starting the trial.
  2. Find your plan name and click Manage Plans.
  3. Click Cancel Plan.
  4. Give a reason, click Continue and follow the on-screen steps.

If you miss the 7 days

Adobe's trial page says you have 14 days after the trial ends to cancel and get a full refund. After that, Adobe's subscription terms apply. For an annual plan billed monthly, cancelling after the first 14 days means a lump-sum charge of half your remaining contract obligation, with a different rule for customers in California. That's the expensive mistake to avoid.

Is Illustrator free any other way?

Not from Adobe. Adobe's FAQ says Illustrator is available only as part of a Creative Cloud membership, with plans for individuals, students and teachers, photographers and institutions. Students and teachers should check the education plan before paying the standard price.

If you only need vector work occasionally, my guide to Illustrator alternatives covers other vector apps, and whether Inkscape is free looks at a free, open source option. For the trial terms across the whole Adobe range, see my page on the Creative Cloud free trial.

Make the 7 days count

  • Start the trial when you've got a real project ready, not on a quiet week.
  • Try the features you'd pay for, such as the generative tools, early in the week.
  • Set a reminder for day 6 to decide.
  • Check the plan name in your Adobe account before day 7, so you know what you'd be billed for.

Single app or Creative Cloud Pro?

The two plans on Adobe's trial page are built for different people. The Illustrator single app plan gives you the full version of Illustrator plus the Adobe Express Premium plan, fonts, images, tutorials, 100GB of cloud storage and 25 monthly generative credits. Creative Cloud Pro gives you Illustrator inside 20+ apps for photo, design and video, with unlimited access to standard creative AI image and vector features like Text to Image and Generative Fill, 4,000 monthly generative credits for premium AI video and audio features, Firefly Boards and access to non-Adobe generative AI models in Firefly.

Adobe also points out that every Illustrator membership includes Adobe Express for quick edits, which is handy for social graphics you don't need to build from scratch.

How Adobe bills the annual plans

Adobe's subscription terms describe two annual options. On an annual, prepaid plan you're charged the annual rate in one lump sum, plus tax, and it renews automatically each year until you cancel; cancel within 14 days for a full refund, and after that the payment is non-refundable and service runs to the end of the term. On an annual plan billed monthly, the early cancellation charge described above applies. Adobe also offers dozens of free Illustrator tutorials, which are worth working through during the trial week so you test the features you'd really use.

My advice

Take the Illustrator trial when you've got work waiting, and choose the single app plan at checkout unless you know you'll use other Adobe apps. Cancel on day 6 if you're unsure; you lose nothing. If you do get billed, use the 14-day refund window straight away, because after that an annual plan's early cancellation charge is half of what's left on the contract.
