How to Wrap Text in Google Docs (and Why It's Greyed Out)

To wrap text in Google Docs, click the image and choose Wrap text in the small toolbar that appears under it. The text then flows around the picture instead of stopping above and below it. If the wrap options are missing, your document is set to pageless, so switch it to pages format first.

A photo dropped into a Google Doc sits on its own line by default, with a big white gap either side. For a newsletter draft, a one-page flyer or a client proposal, that wastes space and looks clunky. Wrapping text lets your words flow around the image, the way a magazine lays out a page.

Wrap text around an image in Google Docs

  1. Open your document on a computer and click the image once to select it.
  2. Look for the small toolbar that pops up just below the image.
  3. Click Wrap text.
  4. Drag the image to where you want it. The text rearranges itself around it.
  5. Optional: choose Move with text or Fix position on page to decide what happens when you edit the words above it.

The five layout options, explained

LayoutWhat happens to your wordsWhen I use it
In lineThe image sits in the line like a big letterLogos in a signature block
Wrap textWords flow around all sides of the imagePhotos in articles, flyers, bios
Break textWords stop above and start again belowWide images and screenshots
Behind textThe image sits under the wordsFaint backgrounds and watermark effects
In front of textThe image covers the wordsStamps or labels placed over a page

The catch: pageless documents can't wrap text

This is the reason most people can't find the option. Google Docs has two page setups: pages and pageless. Pageless is one long continuous scroll, and Google's help page is clear that the image layout options, including Wrap text, aren't available in documents that are in pageless format. The same goes for the Text Wrapping and Position settings in the image sidebar.

To switch back, click File, then Page setup, and choose Pages. Click OK, then click your image again and the wrap options appear. If you're writing something that will be printed or turned into a PDF, pages format is the better choice anyway.

Move with text or fix it on the page?

Once you pick Wrap text or Break text, Google gives you two position choices, and they behave very differently when you edit:

  • Move with text keeps the image attached to its paragraph. Add a few lines above it and the image slides down with that paragraph. Best for articles and reports that will keep changing.
  • Fix position on page pins the image to one place on the page. The text moves around it, but the picture stays put. Best for flyers and one-page layouts where you've placed everything carefully.

If your image keeps jumping to the next page when you edit, switching to Fix position on page usually stops it.

Fine-tune the wrap with All image options

For more control, click the image, then the three-dot menu or Image options, and choose All image options. A sidebar opens on the right. Under Text Wrapping you can set how the image interacts with the text around it, and under Position you can place it precisely. Size & Rotation is in the same sidebar if the picture needs resizing first.

Wrapping text around a text box or shape

Google Docs treats drawings differently from photos. If you insert a text box through Insert, Drawing, the finished drawing lands in your document as an image, so you can click it and use the same Wrap text option. That's a handy way to create a pull quote or a boxed tip beside your main text.

Wrapping on your phone

On an iPhone or iPad, the same pages or pageless switch lives under More, then Page setup, according to Google. If a colleague has flipped a shared document to pageless, images stop wrapping for everyone, so that toggle is the first thing to check. There's also a quicker route on a computer: click Format and choose Switch to Pages format. Pageless also hides page numbers, headers and footers, so it's rarely right for anything you'll send as a finished file.

Layout tips that look good

  • Keep images small. Wrapping works best when the picture takes up a third to half the width of the page. Any wider and the text column beside it gets too thin to read.
  • Align to one side. Pin the image to the left or right edge rather than the middle, so the text flows down one side.
  • Leave some breathing room. A small gap between image and text makes the page look calmer.
  • Check on export. Download a PDF and look at it before you send it. Layout can shift slightly between screen and file.

What I'd do

Make sure the document is in pages format, click the image, choose Wrap text, and pick Move with text for anything you'll keep editing. Use Fix position on page for flyers. Frequently asked questions

How do I wrap text around a picture in Google Docs?

Click the image, then choose Wrap text in the small toolbar under it. Drag the image into place and the text flows around it.

Why can't I wrap text in Google Docs?

Your document is probably in pageless format. Google says the wrap and position options aren't available there, so switch to Pages in File, Page setup.

What's the difference between wrap text and break text?

Wrap text flows words around the image on all sides. Break text stops the text above the image and starts it again below.

How do I stop an image moving in Google Docs?

After choosing Wrap text or Break text, pick Fix position on page. The image stays put while the text moves around it.

Can I wrap text around a text box in Google Docs?

Yes. A text box made with Insert, Drawing goes into the document as an image, so you can select it and choose Wrap text.
