Gmail Live lets you talk to your inbox: open the Gmail app on an Android phone or iPhone, tap Gmail Live at the top, allow the microphone and ask a question out loud, like which gate your flight leaves from, and it answers from your emails with sources. It's English only and needs a Google AI plan or an eligible Workspace edition.
Searching Gmail on a phone while you're walking to a meeting is miserable. Gmail Live fixes that by letting you ask your inbox a question out loud and hear the answer back, with links to the emails it used. Google started bringing it to Workspace customers on 15 October, after an earlier launch for some personal accounts.
Below is how to start a session, what it can and can't do yet, the settings that stop it working, and the questions I'd ask it on a busy day.
Who can use Gmail Live
| You have | Can you use Gmail Live? |
|---|---|
| Personal Google account on Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra | Yes, in English |
| Personal account in Google Workspace Experiments | Yes, as a trusted tester |
| Workspace Business Starter, Standard or Plus | Yes, if your admin allows Gemini Beta |
| Workspace Enterprise Starter, Standard or Plus | Yes, same admin rule |
| Frontline Plus or Workspace for Nonprofits | Yes, same admin rule |
| An Android tablet | Not at this time |
The Workspace announcement says it's for US users with Gmail set to EN-US, and that it's on by default where an organisation has Gemini in Workspace access. If you can't find it on a work account, Google's help page points at the usual culprit: your admin hasn't enabled Beta features.
How to start a Gmail Live session
- In Gmail, make sure Smart features in Google Workspace and Smart features in other Google products are both on.
- Open the Gmail app on your Android phone or iPhone.
- Tap Gmail Live at the top, in the search area.
- The first time, allow microphone access and accept the terms.
- Start talking, or tap one of the suggested prompts.
- Tap End when you're done.
You can interrupt it mid-answer to change direction, which is the bit that makes it feel like a conversation rather than voice search. If you need it to stop listening while it finishes a reply, mute the session instead of ending it.
Checking where an answer came from
This matters more than anything else on this page. Gmail Live cites its sources. Tap a link inside the answer to open that email, or tap the Sources card at the bottom to see every email it used. Opening an email from the source menu ends the session, so check what you need first. If you'd rather see a normal list of results, scroll to the bottom of the sources and tap View search page.
One thing to know about privacy: Gmail Live saves transcripts to your Gemini in Workspace conversation history. You can review and delete that history from a web browser, which is worth doing if you've been asking about anything sensitive.
The voice question: can you change it?
Here's a small contradiction worth knowing. Google's 15 October Workspace post says you can now pick your preferred voice directly in Gmail Live. Google's help page, read on the same day as this guide, still says you can't change the voice at this time. My read is that the voice picker is rolling out with the Workspace launch, so if you don't see it yet, give it a week or two.
Questions to ask Gmail Live
Short, specific questions get the best answers. These work well out loud:
Copy this prompt
What time is my next client call, and who's on the invite?
Copy this prompt
Has anyone replied about the quote I sent on Monday? Tell me who and what they said.
Copy this prompt
What's the booking reference for my hotel next week?
Copy this prompt
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Show me the latest update from my accountant and tell me if they're waiting on anything from me.
Copy this prompt
Which emails from today need a reply before tomorrow morning?
Copy this prompt
Summarise what my team agreed in the launch thread, then tell me the next deadline.
If Gmail Live won't start
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Nothing happens when you tap it | Allow microphone access for the Gmail app in your phone settings |
| A volume warning | Turn your device volume up or tap Turn volume up |
| The session cuts out | Check your connection and tap Try again |
| No Gmail Live button at all | Check smart features are on, your language is English and, on a work account, that Gemini Beta is enabled |
If you like working by voice, my guide to Gemini prompts for business owners has questions that translate well to spoken requests, and this explainer on what Gemini 3 is covers the models doing the work behind the scenes.
Tools that work with Gmail Live
Gmail Live is one piece of Google's Gemini set-up. These sit well alongside it, named rather than linked:
- Gmail AI Inbox on desktop, for a list of suggested to-dos and topics.
- Gemini in Gmail for written summaries and drafted replies.
- Gemini Live in the Gemini app, for voice conversations beyond your inbox.
- Google Calendar for acting on the meeting times it finds.
- Google Keep for jotting down what it tells you.
- Google Tasks for turning an answer into a to-do.
If you'd like a hand rolling Gemini out across your team without the guesswork, that's exactly the kind of work I do.
My verdict
For anyone who lives in their inbox and spends half the day on the move, it's a useful shortcut. It isn't a replacement for reading important email, and it's still beta. Use it for the quick lookups (times, references, who said what) and always tap the source before you act on anything that matters.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gmail Live available on desktop?
No. Google's help page says Gmail Live is in the Gmail app on Android and iPhone. It isn't available on an Android tablet either, at this time.
Is Gmail Live available outside the US?
The Workspace announcement says it's for users in the US with EN-US as their language, and the help page says it's English only.
Does Gmail Live keep a record of what I ask?
Yes. It saves transcripts in your Gemini in Workspace conversation history, which you can check and delete from a web browser.
Why can't I find Gmail Live on my work account?
Your admin controls access to Gemini Beta. If Beta features aren't enabled for your organisation, Gmail Live won't appear.
Can I change the Gmail Live voice?
Google's 15 October Workspace post says you can pick a voice, but the help page still says you can't change it at this time, so it depends on whether the update has reached your account.
