Gemini is now available globally on Android Auto and in cars with Google built-in. To use it, say Hey Google, tap the microphone or press and hold the voice button on your steering wheel, wait for the tone, then speak naturally. From 20 October 2026 Google is also rolling out Personal Intelligence, which lets Gemini answer using your own Gmail, Calendar, Photos and Maps, but only if you switch it on.
Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most devices, and the car is where the difference is easiest to feel. Google says Gemini understands the same commands as Assistant, but you don't have to use set phrases any more. You can ask a messy, two-part question and it'll follow.
Here's how to use it on the road, what the new Personal Intelligence update adds, and the privacy setting I'd check before your next long drive.
How to start Gemini in your car
- Connect your phone to Android Auto, or use a car with Google built-in.
- Say Hey Google, tap the microphone, or press and hold the voice command button on your steering wheel.
- Wait until you hear the tone.
- Say what you'd like to do, in normal language.
For a longer conversation, say Hey Google, let's talk or Hey Google, let's talk live to start Gemini Live. Google's help page suggests using it to brainstorm, explore a topic or even rehearse a speech on the way to an event.
What Personal Intelligence adds
Google's announcement on 20 October 2026 is about context. With your permission, Personal Intelligence connects information from Google apps you already use: Workspace, including Gmail and Google Calendar, plus Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search. Gemini can then find a specific detail in an email or a photo, or reason across several sources, without you explaining the background.
| You say | What Gemini does |
|---|---|
| What's my flight gate, and is my flight on time? | Finds the booking email and checks for delays in one answer |
| Find me an indoor restaurant along my route that matches my usual vibe | Shortlists places that fit your preferences, such as vegetarian options |
| Take me to my doctor's appointment | Finds the appointment and navigates there, with no address needed |
| Find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there | Identifies the place from your photo and gives directions |
| Take me to the coffee shop we were talking about yesterday | Picks up the earlier conversation and sets the route |
For anyone who drives between client meetings, the calendar example is the real time saver. Ask for your next appointment and go, without hunting through your inbox at a red light.
Where and when it's available
| Gemini | Personal Intelligence | |
|---|---|---|
| Android Auto | Available globally | Rolling out from 20 October 2026 |
| Cars with Google built-in | Available globally | Coming in the following months |
If you've already switched on Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app on your phone, Google says it comes with you into the car automatically. If you haven't, you can set it up any time in your Gemini settings.
The privacy switch to check
Google says your apps aren't connected until you choose to turn Personal Intelligence on, and you can turn it off at any time in your Gemini settings. In cars with Google built-in, personal answers are only shared when you're in the car with your phone connected.
That matters if you share a car with Google built-in: the personal answers depend on your phone being connected. Before you lend your phone or your login to anyone, remember that Personal Intelligence can read across your connected apps.
What still works without it
You don't have to connect anything to get value from Gemini in the car. Google says navigation, music, calls and general questions all work as normal without Personal Intelligence. The only difference is that the answers aren't tailored to you.
- Navigate somewhere by asking in plain language
- Play music or a podcast
- Make calls hands-free
- Ask general questions, or brainstorm out loud with Gemini Live
Prompts worth saying out loud
Between meetings
Hey Google, what's my next meeting today, and how long will it take me to get there?
Prep on the drive
Hey Google, let's talk. Help me plan what to say on my 10am call with a new client. Ask me three questions first.
Work with meWant AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Inbox, hands-free
Hey Google, read me the most recent email from my bookkeeper and tell me if it needs a reply today.
Keep it hands-free. Gemini is designed so you can keep your eyes on the road, so if a task needs reading or typing, leave it until you've parked.
Tools that work with it
In the car, Gemini works with Google Maps, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, YouTube and Search through Personal Intelligence, plus Gemini Live for longer conversations. Drivers comparing options often look at Apple CarPlay with Siri as the main alternative.
Gemini's task features have changed names, and our guide to Gemini Spark and Task explains where they went.
My take
For business owners who spend time on the road, this is the most practical AI update of the month: your diary, your inbox and your saved places, by voice, without fiddling with your phone. Switch on Personal Intelligence only if you're comfortable with Gemini reading across those apps, and turn it off if you share devices. My guide to Gemini Live covers the talking side, and using Gemini on Android shows how to set it up on your phone first. If you'd like help putting AI to work across your week, that's what I do in my one-to-one AI sessions.
