How to Turn Off Sensitive Content Warnings on Twitter (X), iPhone Included (2026)

What This Setting Controls

I get asked about this a lot, so let me be clear from the start. X (formerly Twitter) has a setting that blurs images and videos flagged as sensitive. This covers things like graphic violence, nudity, or adult content that other users have marked when posting.

Turning it off does not remove moderation entirely. It just stops X from blurring that content before you see it. You will still see a warning label on some posts, but the media itself will not be hidden by default.

This matters because some people think switching this off changes what X recommends to them. It does not. It only affects whether flagged media is blurred or shown clearly.

How to Turn Off Sensitive Content on Desktop or Mobile Browser

This works the same whether you are on a laptop or using a mobile browser like Safari or Chrome on your phone.

  1. Log into X and click your profile icon in the top corner.
  2. Select Settings and Privacy from the menu.
  3. Click Privacy and Safety.
  4. Scroll down to Content You See.
  5. Select Media and switch on Display Media That May Contain Sensitive Content.

Once you have done this, the toggle stays on until you change it again. You do not need to repeat this every time you log in.

How to Turn Off Sensitive Content on the iPhone App

This is where people get confused. You cannot do this through your iPhone's own settings app. Apple does not give X that level of control, and X does not expose this setting there either. You have to go into the X app itself.

  1. Open the X app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top left corner.
  3. Tap Settings and Privacy.
  4. Tap Privacy and Safety, then Content You See.
  5. Tap Media, then turn on Display Media That May Contain Sensitive Content.

If you have updated the app recently and cannot find this menu, check for an app update first. X moves these settings around occasionally, so the wording or location might shift slightly between versions.

Why the Toggle Might Not Appear or Work

Sometimes people report that the setting is missing or greyed out. There are a few common reasons for this.

If your account is registered as under 18, or X believes it might be, this setting may be restricted. X applies stricter defaults to accounts it thinks belong to younger users, and you may not be able to override this yourself.

Region also plays a part. Some countries have different legal requirements around adult content, and X adjusts what it allows based on where your account or device is located. If this applies to you, there is no workaround within the app. I will say plainly that in these cases, you cannot force the setting to change.

Turning It Off for a Specific Account You Follow

You can also allow sensitive media from one account without changing your global setting, though this is less commonly used.

Go to the profile of the account in question, tap the three dots menu, and look for an option related to media settings for that account. Not every profile will have this, and it depends on how that user has configured their own content settings.

This is a narrower fix and will not help if you are trying to see sensitive content across X generally. For that, you need the main Privacy and Safety toggle covered earlier.

What Happens After You Switch It Off

Once enabled, flagged media will display normally in your timeline, in search results, and on profiles. You will still see a small label on the post indicating it was marked as sensitive, but you will not need to tap through a blur to view it.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

This does not affect private messages separately. Media sent in direct messages has its own handling, and X may still apply blurring there regardless of your main content setting.

It is worth knowing that other users browsing with the default setting will still see your posts blurred if you share sensitive media yourself. Your personal toggle only affects what you see, not what others see when viewing your content.

Switching the Setting Back On

If you change your mind, the process is identical in reverse. Go back to Content You See under Privacy and Safety, and switch the toggle off again.

There is no limit to how often you can change this. Some people turn it off for a specific period, such as research or work reasons, then switch it back afterwards.

A Few Practical Notes

If you manage X on behalf of a business or client, I would recommend checking this setting on any shared or managed accounts. It is easy to overlook, and it affects what the account holder sees day to day, not what followers see.

Also worth noting, this setting lives on the account level, not the device level. If you log into X on a different phone or browser, your preference carries over because it is tied to your account, not the hardware you are using.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn off sensitive content warnings through my iPhone settings app?

No. This setting lives inside the X app itself, under Privacy and Safety. Apple's iPhone settings do not control what X shows or hides, so you need to open X directly.

Why is the sensitive content toggle greyed out for me?

This usually happens if your account is flagged as under 18, or if you are in a region with stricter content rules. In these cases, X may not let you override the default setting.

Does turning this off change what X recommends to me?

No. It only controls whether flagged media is blurred or shown clearly. It does not change the algorithm or what type of content gets shown in your timeline.

Will other people see my posts unblurred if I turn this off?

No. The setting only affects what you personally see. Anyone else browsing with default settings will still see sensitive media from your account blurred until they change their own setting.
