How to Switch Accounts on X (Twitter) Without Logging Out

To switch accounts on X (Twitter), add your second account once, then tap your profile icon and pick the smaller profile icon of the account you want. On iPhone or Android, open the navigation menu, tap the more icon and choose Add an existing account. On desktop, click your profile icon in the side menu, then the more or plus icon, and add it there.

Once both accounts are added, you never have to log out and back in again. That matters if you run a business account and a personal one, or look after accounts for clients. Here's how it works on every version of X, plus the one thing X won't let you do: merge two accounts into one.

Where to switch accounts on each version of X

Where you use XHow to add an accountHow to switch
X app for iPhoneNavigation menu, more icon, Add an existing accountTap the smaller profile icon next to your own
X app for AndroidNavigation menu or profile icon, down arrow in the header, Add existing accountTap the down arrow in the header
x.com on desktopProfile icon in the side menu, more or plus icon, Add an existing accountClick your profile icon, then the smaller profile icon
mobile.x.comProfile icon top left, more icon, Add an existing accountLong-press your profile icon, then tap the smaller icon
X LiteProfile icon top left, more icon, Add an existing accountLong-press your profile icon, then tap the smaller icon
X for WindowsProfile icon top left, more icon, Add an existing accountClick your profile icon, then the smaller icon

Notice the two differences. On Android, the switcher sits behind a small down arrow in the header. On mobile.x.com and X Lite you long-press your profile icon, while on iPhone and desktop you tap or click. Those two details are usually why people think switching is broken.

How to add and switch accounts on iPhone

  1. Open the X app and tap the navigation menu icon.
  2. Tap the more icon.
  3. Choose Add an existing account and log in to your second account. You can also choose Create new account here.
  4. To switch, tap the profile icon of the account you're in, then tap the smaller profile icon of the account you want.
  5. Open the navigation menu again to get back.

How to add and switch accounts on Android

  1. In the top menu, tap the navigation menu icon or your profile icon, whichever you see.
  2. Tap the down arrow icon in the header.
  3. Choose Add existing account and log in, or Create new account.
  4. To switch, tap the down arrow in the header and pick the account.

How to switch accounts on X on a computer

  1. On x.com, click your profile icon in the side menu.
  2. Click the more icon or the plus icon.
  3. Choose Add an existing account and log in.
  4. To switch, click your profile icon and then the smaller profile icon of the other account.

On a shared computer, remember that every account you add stays one click away for anyone using that browser. Log out of the accounts you don't want others to reach.

How to switch on mobile.x.com and X Lite

  1. Tap your profile icon at the top left.
  2. Tap the more icon and choose Add an existing account.
  3. To switch, long-press your profile icon, then tap the smaller profile icon of the account you want.

To sign out completely, follow logging out of the X app.

Can you merge two X accounts into one?

No. X's Help Center says it doesn't offer any way to merge accounts, or to move posts, following or followers from one account to another. So if you've got an old account and a new one, the switcher is the closest you'll get. Pick the account you want to grow, point people to it from the other one's bio and a pinned post, and keep the second account for logging in when you need it.

If the real goal is a new name rather than a new account, you don't need a second account at all. You can change your name on X and keep every follower.

One account switching gotcha: shared phone numbers

Lots of people put the same phone number on every account they run. It works, but it has a side effect worth knowing. X's password reset page says that if several accounts are linked to one phone number, you can't use that number to reset a password. You'll need the email address instead.

So give each account its own working email, and turn on two-factor authentication for every account you add to the switcher. One weak account in your switcher is a way in to all of them on that device.

Managing several accounts for work

If you're looking after a brand account alongside your own, the switcher is fine for posting and replying. If you're watching several accounts at once, a dashboard view like X Pro lets you see them side by side instead of flipping back and forth. X's Help Center also mentions X Pro as a place you may still be logged in if you ever get locked out of the app.

My advice

Add every account you use once, on the device you use most, and stop logging in and out. It's faster, and it cuts down on the password resets that come from typing logins on the go. Just keep the business account's email and phone separate from your personal one, so if one account ever has a problem, the other isn't caught up in it.

Account details like age are handled in changing the birthday on X.

Frequently asked questions

How do I switch between Twitter accounts without logging out?

Add your second account once: from the more icon in the navigation menu on iPhone, the down arrow in the header on Android, or next to your profile icon on desktop. After that, switch from the same place without logging out.

Why can't I switch accounts on mobile.x.com?

On mobile.x.com and X Lite, X says you long-press your profile icon to see your other accounts. A normal tap won't show them.

Can I merge two X accounts?

No. X says it doesn't offer a way to merge accounts or to move posts, following or followers from one account to another.

Can I use one phone number for several X accounts?

You can, but X says that if several accounts share a phone number, you can't use that number to reset a password. Make sure each account has an email you can reach.

Can I create a new X account from the account switcher?

Yes. In the X app for iPhone, the same menu that offers Add an existing account also offers Create new account.
