To rotate a PDF in Acrobat, go to All tools, then Organize pages, choose the pages and click Rotate left or Rotate right, then save. In Preview on a Mac, click the Rotate button, or hold Option to turn right. Using View, Rotate view only changes what you see, not the file.
A sideways page in an otherwise normal PDF is annoying, and it's even worse when you're about to print or send it. The fix takes a few seconds, but there are two kinds of rotation, and picking the wrong one is why people say the page turned back the moment they reopened the file. Here's the difference, with steps for Acrobat and Mac Preview.
Two kinds of rotation
| Method | What it changes | Does it stick? |
|---|---|---|
| Organize pages, then Rotate | The page itself | Yes, once you save |
| View, then Rotate view | How you see the page right now | No, it resets when you reopen the PDF |
Adobe says it plainly: the Rotate view option is a temporary change, and the original orientation comes back the next time you open the file. If you rotated the view, closed the file and found the page sideways again, that's why.
Rotate pages for good in Acrobat
- Open the PDF and select All tools, then Organize pages.
- Choose which pages to rotate. Use the dropdown under Pages Selected, pick a preset such as Even pages, Odd pages or All pages, or type specific page numbers.
- Click Rotate page left for a 90 degree turn counterclockwise, or Rotate page right for a 90 degree turn clockwise.
- Close the tools pane and save the PDF.
The Even and Odd presets are the hidden gem here. If you scanned a double-sided document and every second page came out upside down, rotate just the even pages in one go instead of fixing each by hand.
Rotate a PDF on a Mac with Preview
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- To turn a single page, click the Rotate button, which turns the page to the left. Keep clicking to continue turning it.
- To turn it right, hold the Option key and click.
- To turn several pages, choose View, then Thumbnails (or Contact Sheet), select the pages and click the Rotate button.
Preview saves automatically, so there's no separate step to make the rotation stick. That's convenient, but it also means a mistake is saved too. Apple's advice for undoing changes is to use File, then Revert To, then Browse All Versions, which lets you go back to an earlier version of the file.
Crop while you're at it
Sideways pages often come with extra margins or black scanner edges. Preview can crop a page: show the Markup toolbar, select the part you want to keep and click Crop. If you crop the wrong area, choose Edit then Undo Crop straight away. Acrobat's rotate tool doesn't crop, so if you need that too, Preview is quicker on a Mac.
Fixing a whole document that scanned sideways
- All pages the same way: choose All pages and rotate once.
- Alternating pages: use the Even pages or Odd pages preset.
- Just a handful of pages: type the page numbers, separated by commas.
- One wide table in an upright report: rotate only that page, then check the page next to it.
After you rotate: a quick check
Scroll through the whole document once. Pages you rotated can look right on screen but end up cut off at the edge when printed, particularly if the original page size was unusual. Print preview, or print one page to PDF, if the printout matters. If the PDF is for a client, give the file a sensible name before you send it. My guide to making a PDF from a blog post has a simple workflow for creating clean files from the start.
When rotate doesn't work
Adobe's other instructions apply here: if you can't change the file, go to File, Document Properties, Security and look for restrictions. A locked PDF may let you read it but not alter it. In that case ask the creator for an unlocked copy, or use View, Rotate view just to read it comfortably. And if you want to shift pages around after rotating them, my notes on sharing a finished file without it arriving broken are worth a look.
Rotating a PDF you didn't make
If someone else sent you a PDF with sideways pages, you can usually fix it and send it back, but it's polite to say you've done it. When the document is one you'll share widely, rotate it once, save a clean copy and send that version, so everybody sees the same pages the same way up. It saves a chain of replies saying 'it's sideways again'.

My verdict
Use Organize pages in Acrobat when you want the page itself to change, and use the Even and Odd presets for double-sided scans. On a Mac, Preview's Rotate button does it in a click. Treat Rotate view as a reading aid only, because it won't be there tomorrow.
Frequently asked questions
How do I rotate a PDF permanently?
In Acrobat, go to All tools, Organize pages, pick the pages, click Rotate page left or right and save. In Preview, click the Rotate button; it saves automatically.
Why did my PDF page go back to sideways?
You probably used View, Rotate view. Adobe says that is temporary and the original orientation returns the next time you open the file.

Yes. In Acrobat use the Pages Selected field with page numbers or the Even, Odd or All presets. In Preview select the thumbnails you want first.
How do I rotate a PDF to the right in Preview?
Hold the Option key and click the Rotate button until the page is where you want it.
Can I undo a rotation in Preview?
You can go back to an earlier version by choosing File, Revert To, Browse All Versions.
