To resize in Canva, open your design and select Resize on the editor menu bar, pick a suggested size or enter a Custom size, then choose Copy & resize to keep the original or Resize this design to change it. Magic Resize is listed for Canva Pro, Teams, Business, Enterprise, Education and Nonprofits plans.
Resizing is the Canva job I do most often: one Instagram post becomes a story, a LinkedIn banner and a Facebook cover before lunch. Canva calls the tool Magic Resize, and it does more than stretch the canvas. It can turn one design into several new sizes at once, resize a single page, or crop the canvas to fit whatever you've selected.
Magic Resize, step by step
- Open the design and select Resize on the editor menu bar.
- Pick from the suggested sizes, or use Browse by category. You can tick more than one.
- For your own measurements, select Custom size. You can lock the aspect ratio here or leave it free.
- Under All pages, choose which pages to resize. If you leave it, Canva resizes every page.
- Select Copy & resize to make a new version, or Resize this design to change the original.
If you chose Copy & resize, the copy lands in the same folder as the original. Pick several sizes and Canva saves them together in a new folder, with the folder name shown on the confirmation message.
Copy & resize or Resize this design?
| Option | What happens | When I'd use it |
|---|---|---|
| Copy & resize | Makes a new design, original untouched | Almost always, especially for client work |
| Resize this design | Changes the original | When the first size was simply wrong |
| Bundles | Several formats in one go, such as vertical videos | Repurposing one post across platforms |
| Resize canvas to Selection | Shrinks the page to the selected elements | Trimming spare space round a logo |
Resizing just one page
Sometimes only one page needs a new shape, like a single square slide in a vertical deck. Select the page background or its thumbnail, choose Edit on the floating toolbar to open the Edit Page panel, then select Resize and pick a size. The rest of the design stays as it was.
There's also Resize canvas to Selection. Select two or more elements, a group, or one image or video, right-click (or choose More) and the page shrinks to fit them, while the elements stay put. Canva says this isn't available in Canva Websites, Docs or Sheets.
Size limits Magic Resize won't go past
| Limit | What Canva says |
|---|---|
| Smallest design | 40 x 40 px |
| Largest design | 8000 x 3125 px |
| Designs per batch | Up to 50 at once |
| New sizes per design | Up to 5 |
| Total outputs per bulk action | 250 |
If the Custom size boxes turn red, you've gone outside those limits. For something bigger than the maximum, Canva's workaround is to lock the aspect ratio, bring one side down within the limit so the other follows in proportion, then download as a PNG at a larger scale. Canva says you can download from 0.5 up to 3.125 times the size.
Where Magic Resize goes missing
This is the bit that confuses people. If you're on an eligible plan and still can't see Magic Resize, Canva says you're probably working in a Canva Doc, where it isn't supported. The Doc equivalent is Magic Switch, which turns a Canva Doc into a presentation rather than changing its dimensions.
Two other things worth knowing. Each Magic Resize counts against your monthly AI usage limit, so batch resizing a whole campaign uses up more of it. And when you resize a presentation to video dimensions, Canva turns each slide into its own video page instead of one long video. It looks like a bug because you can't see a full timeline. Select the pages and choose Edit as video to fix it.
Undoing a resize you regret
If you used Resize this design and hate the result, go to File, then Version history, pick the autosaved version from before the change and select Restore. Canva says this only works when you resized the design directly, not when you made a copy. With a copy there's nothing to undo: your original is still sitting in the folder.

If Magic Resize isn't on your plan
Magic Resize appears on Canva's list for Pro, Business, Enterprise, Education, Higher education, Nonprofits and Teams plans. If yours isn't there, you can still start a fresh design at the size you need. On the homepage banner select Custom size, pick px, in, mm or cm, enter the width and height and select Create new design. Then copy your elements across and tidy the layout by hand. It's slower, but it works.
The short version from me
Always use Copy & resize. It takes no extra effort and it means you never wreck the original your client signed off. I'd also resize first and then tidy: Canva moves things sensibly, but text on a story size often needs nudging away from the edges.
