How to Crop in Canva: Photos, Videos and Frames

To crop in Canva, select the image or video, click Crop on the editor toolbar or double-click it, drag a crop handle, then click Done. The detail people trip over: Canva keeps the hidden parts, so you can change the crop later, but GIFs and embeds can't be cropped.

A good crop does more for a photo than any filter. Cut out the empty sky, move the subject off-centre, trim a stranger from the edge, and a snapshot starts to look like it was planned. In Canva you can crop photos, videos and many graphics without leaving the design, and nothing is lost when you do.

That last point is the one that surprises people, so I'll start there, then take you through the steps, crop handles, aspect ratios and the cases where cropping won't work. Everything below follows Canva's help centre article on resizing and cropping.

Cropping in Canva doesn't delete the rest of the image

According to the help article, cropping hides part of an element so you can focus on a specific area, and the hidden parts aren't deleted. That means you can come back later and change the crop. If you trimmed too far, open crop mode again and drag the edges back out. It's a forgiving tool.

Cropping an image or video in Canva, step by step

  1. Select the image, video or element you want to crop.
  2. Click Crop on the editor toolbar, or double-click the element.
  3. If the element isn't inside a frame, choose a crop aspect ratio.
  4. Drag a crop handle to change which part stays visible.
  5. Click Done in the side panel, or click outside the element, to finish.

The help article also says you can resize the element inside the crop area, which is useful when you want the subject bigger without changing the frame around it.

Choosing a crop aspect ratio in Canva

The help article says predefined aspect ratios are available for elements that sit outside frames. Pick one when you need a shape that fits a particular spot, such as a square for a profile picture, or a wider shape for a banner. The article doesn't say whether elements inside frames offer the same presets, so if you can't see them there, that's likely why.

A tip from my own habits rather than the help page: decide the ratio before you place the picture on the page, then build the rest of the layout around it. It's much easier than squeezing text around an awkward shape later.

Cropping photos inside frames and grids in Canva

Frames and grids work a little differently. For media sitting in one, Canva's help says to double-click or double-tap the picture to crop it. A frame gives the image a fixed shape, and the crop decides which part of the picture shows through. Slide the image around inside the frame until the important bit sits where you want it.

Stretching a Canva photo instead of cropping it

Sometimes you want a photo wider or taller, and you're fine with a little distortion. Canva's help gives the route: double-click the photo to enter crop mode, then hold Shift while dragging a resize handle to stretch it without keeping its aspect ratio. Use it sparingly, because faces and logos look odd when squashed.

What you can't crop in Canva

The help article is clear on one limit: you can't crop GIFs or embeds. If the Crop button is missing, check what you've selected. An animated GIF can't be trimmed this way, and neither can embedded content like a video player or map.

A graphic from Canva's library may also behave differently from a photo. Some graphics have a fixed shape, so if cropping isn't offered, try placing the graphic inside a frame or choosing a similar photo instead. That's a suggestion from me, not something Canva's article spells out.

Cropping photos in Canva for business posts and listings

For small businesses, cropping is mostly about making one photo work in several places. The same product shot might need to be square for a post, wide for a banner and tall for a story. Duplicate the design, change the page size, then recrop. Keep the subject away from the edges so it survives each crop. If you're planning posts like this, my guide on writing and scheduling an Instagram post for your business pairs well with it.

When the image itself comes from an AI tool, I explain what's possible in my guide to ChatGPT images, and a Canva crop is a quick tidy-up afterwards. For a broader view of the editor, see my Canva review.

If the Crop button is missing in Canva

  • Select the picture itself. The Crop button only appears for a selected image, video or element.
  • Check it isn't a GIF or an embed, which can't be cropped.
  • Try double-clicking the element, which Canva says also opens crop mode.
  • If the picture is in a frame or grid, double-click or double-tap it instead.

Button positions change between app versions, so if the toolbar looks different on your screen, search Canva's help centre for the latest layout.
