Facebook doesn't offer a one-tap Remove follower button like Instagram's. To remove followers who aren't your friends, set Who can follow me to Friends in Settings, under Followers and public content; Facebook says you then lose followers who aren't your friends. To remove one specific person, block them.
If you've come from Instagram, you'll be looking for a Remove button next to each follower on Facebook. Facebook's help doesn't describe one for personal profiles. Instead, it gives you a setting that controls who can follow you at all, and that setting is the real fix. Here's how followers work on Facebook, how to clear out the ones you don't want, and the side effect most people don't expect.
How followers work on Facebook
According to Facebook's help, your friends automatically follow you. On top of that, if your profile allows it, people who aren't your friends can follow you too, and they see the posts you share publicly. So your follower count is a mix of friends and strangers, and the strangers are the group you can control.
Remove all followers who aren't your friends
- Open Facebook and go to Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Find Followers and public content, under the Audience and visibility section.
- Change Who can follow me from Public to Friends.
Facebook explains the effect in its pro mode help: when your preference changes from Public to Friends, you lose any followers who aren't your friends. That's the closest Facebook gets to a bulk remove-followers button.
Remove one specific person
If there's one person you want gone, the cleanest route is to block them. Blocking ends the connection completely, including following. If they're a friend who you'd simply rather didn't see some posts, unfriending or restricting them is gentler. Changing the audience on your posts from Public to Friends also means non-friend followers stop seeing them.
| You want to | Best option |
|---|---|
| Stop all non-friend followers | Set Who can follow me to Friends |
| Remove one stranger | Block them |
| Limit what a friend sees | Restrict them or use post audiences |
| Stop seeing someone's posts | Unfollow them (that's the reverse direction) |
Don't confuse it with unfollowing
This one is about who you follow, not who follows you. Facebook says that when you unfollow someone, you won't see their posts in your Feed. It doesn't remove them from your followers. Plenty of people unfollow someone thinking it removes them, and wonder why that person can still see their public posts.
The pro mode catch
If you've turned on professional mode, Facebook sets Who can follow me to Public so fans can connect with you. Turning pro mode off switches it back to Friends, and Facebook says you'll lose followers who aren't your friends. That's useful if you want a clean slate, and painful if you built a following on purpose. Think about it before you switch modes on a profile you use for business.
Check who follows you first
Before changing anything, look at your followers. Your profile shows a follower count, and tapping it, where Facebook makes the list available, shows who follows you. The ones who aren't your friends are the people a settings change would remove. If it's mostly people you know and don't mind, you may not need to change anything. If it's full of accounts you don't recognise, that's a strong sign it's time to switch Who can follow me to Friends.
Unknown followers aren't always harmless. Fake and spam accounts often follow lots of profiles to look real or to watch for public posts they can copy. Keeping your followers to friends, and your posts to a Friends audience, cuts off most of that in one go.
Hide your followers list instead
Sometimes the real worry isn't who follows you but who can see the list. Facebook has settings controlling who can see the people and Pages you follow, and who can see your friends. Tightening those keeps the list private without losing anyone, which suits people who are happy to be followed but don't want the list on show.
If you use a Facebook Page for business
Pages work differently from personal profiles, and a growing follower count is usually the goal. If a particular person is causing trouble on your Page, banning them from the Page is the tool to use rather than changing who can follow you.

My verdict
There's no Remove follower button on a Facebook profile. To clear out strangers, set Who can follow me to Friends under Followers and public content. To get rid of one person, block them. And remember turning off pro mode does the same clear-out automatically, so don't do it by accident on a profile you've grown on purpose. If in doubt, change the setting on a quiet day and watch what happens to your count.
