You can't recover deleted Snapchat messages that weren't saved: Snapchat Support says unsaved chats are removed from its servers and it can't bring them back. Saved chats are different. Request a My Data download at accounts.snapchat.com and include Saved Chat History to get a copy.
That sinking feeling when a chat you needed has vanished is horrible, whether it was an address a friend sent, a supplier's details or a customer's order message. I want to be straight with you from the start, because there's a lot of nonsense online about this. Snapchat is built to delete messages, and its own support team says it can't bring back chats that weren't saved.
So this guide does two jobs. It explains what Snapchat's help centre says you can and can't get back, and it shows you the one official route for downloading the chats you did save. Then it covers the settings that stop the same thing happening again. Everything below comes from Snapchat's official help articles.
Can you recover deleted Snapchat messages?
Here's the honest answer. Snapchat Support says that unless you've saved them, deleted, viewed or expired Chats with Friends, Snaps with Friends and Memories are removed from its servers, and that this means it can't recover them for you.
That's a deliberate design choice to protect privacy, not a bug. If a message wasn't saved and it has gone, there's no button inside Snapchat to restore it, and Snapchat's support team can't restore it either. Anyone promising otherwise, especially an app or website asking for your login, is someone to steer well clear of. Giving your details to a third party puts your whole account at risk.
What you can get back is anything that was saved in the chat. That's where the My Data download comes in.
How Snapchat decides when messages are deleted
It helps to understand the timer, because it explains why a message you saw yesterday might be gone today. According to Snapchat's article When does Snapchat delete Snaps and Chats?, chats in one-on-one and Group conversations are deleted by default 24 hours after everyone has viewed them, or 31 days after sending, whichever comes first.
You can change that for each conversation. The choices Snapchat lists are right after viewing, 7 days after viewing, or never. Unopened Snaps are deleted automatically after 31 days.
| Chat setting | When messages go |
|---|---|
| Right after viewing | Once everyone has viewed them |
| 24 hours after viewing (default) | 24 hours after everyone views them, or 31 days after sending |
| 7 days after viewing | 7 days after everyone views them |
| Never | Kept unless someone deletes them |
Getting saved Snapchat messages back with My Data
If messages were saved, you can request a copy of them. Snapchat's help article How do I download my data from Snapchat? lists Saved Chat History as one of the data types you can include. Here's the process it describes:
- Log in at accounts.snapchat.com, or open Settings in the app and tap My Data.
- Choose My Data and turn on the data types you want, including Saved Chat History.
- Pick a date range, or switch the range off to request everything.
- Confirm the email address where you'd like to be told the download is ready.
- Tap or click Submit.
- When the email arrives, go back to My Data, select See exports, then Download.
Snapchat says it aims to deliver within 7 days, though large downloads can take longer. The file arrives as a zip, so you'll need software that can open zip files. A computer is often easier than a phone for this part.
Why some saved Snapchat chats don't show up in the download
Even saved messages aren't kept forever in every situation. Snapchat's help says saved messages in a one-on-one chat may be removed over time, for example after you remove each other as friends or block each other. Its download article gives the same example: if you're no longer friends, saved messages from that chat may no longer be available to download.
Snapchat also says different types of data are stored for different lengths of time, so you might not be able to get everything since you joined. If a chat is missing from your export, that's usually why.
Deleted Snapchat messages: what the other person sees
If someone else deleted a message, you can't get it back from your side, because you can't delete or restore messages another Snapchatter sent. Snapchat's help article on saving or deleting Chat messages says friends can see that a message was deleted in the chat. So you'll often know something was removed, even though you can't read it.
Leaving a group works in a similar way. Snapchat says leaving a Group Chat clears the Snaps and Chats you sent there, even if another member saved them.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Blocking matters here too. If you block someone, you can no longer see your chat with them. I've explained the knock-on effects in my guide to blocking someone on Snapchat, so read that before you block anyone whose messages you might want to keep.
How to keep Snapchat messages so you don't lose them again
Prevention is the only reliable fix. These are the options Snapchat's help articles describe:
- Save a message by tapping it. Saved messages get a grey background that everyone in the chat can see. Tap again to unsave.
- Save a Snap by pressing and holding it while you're viewing it, or just after. It then sits in the chat as Chat Media.
- Change the chat timer. On the Chat screen, press and hold a friend's or group's name, open Chat and Notification Settings, tap Delete Chats and choose a longer option.
- Download your data now and then, so you've got your own copy of saved chats.
Snapchat notes that anyone in the conversation can change the delete setting, and everyone sees a status message when it changes. New messages follow the new setting, while older ones keep the setting from when they were sent.
Recovering Snapchat messages for a business account
If you chat with customers or collaborators on Snapchat, treat it like a conversation, not a filing cabinet. Save anything with an order, a date or an agreement in it, and copy the important details somewhere you control, such as your notes or your email. That habit takes seconds and saves real headaches later.
It's also worth requesting a My Data download before any big change to your account. If you're thinking of leaving the app altogether, my walkthrough on deleting a Snapchat account explains the steps, and grabbing your saved chat history first is a smart move.
If a deleted Snapchat message involves harassment or threats
Sometimes people want an old message back because it was abusive or threatening. If that's you, report the account to Snapchat through the app or the help centre, and if you're in danger, contact the police. Screenshot anything harmful the moment you see it, as long as doing so is safe for you, because once a message expires it may be gone for good.
