To delete a message on Snapchat, open the chat, press and hold a message you sent and tap Delete. The catch: Snapchat says your friend can see that a message was deleted, and Clear Conversation in Settings only tidies your Chat feed without deleting anything you've sent.
We've all sent a message and winced a second later: the wrong chat, a typo in a client's name, a joke that read badly. On Snapchat you can take back what you sent, but there's a catch most people only learn the hard way. Deleting leaves a trace, and clearing a chat from your list doesn't delete anything at all.
So this guide separates the three things people mean by deleting messages on Snapchat: removing a message you sent, clearing a conversation from your Chat feed, and setting chats to disappear by themselves. Each step follows Snapchat's own help articles.
Delete a message you sent on Snapchat
This is the one you want when a specific message needs to go.
- Swipe right from the Camera to open the Chat screen and open the conversation.
- Find the message you sent.
- Press and hold it.
- Tap Delete.
Snapchat's help article says you can delete your own messages, Snaps, Bitmoji, Memories and photos you've sent from your Camera Roll. It works in one-to-one chats and groups.
What your friend sees when you delete a Snapchat message
Here's the bit that matters most. Snapchat's help article says your friends can see that a message was deleted. The text disappears, but a note shows that something was removed, so a deletion is never completely silent.
- If your friend already read the message, deleting it won't erase their memory of it.
- Snapchat notes they may have taken a screenshot before you deleted it.
- Removal from Snapchat's servers and your friend's phone can be delayed if they have a poor connection or an outdated app.
My advice for business accounts and creators: treat every message as something the other person might keep. Deleting is a tidy-up tool, not an undo button.
Messages you can't delete on Snapchat
The help article is clear about the limits. You can't delete messages that other Snapchatters sent, even in your own chat. If you've blocked someone, you can't see your chat with them, so you can't save or delete those messages either. If the problem is someone else's message, blocking or reporting them is the right route, and I've written up how blocking works on Snapchat step by step.
Clear Conversation on Snapchat: what it does and doesn't do
Clear Conversation is the setting people confuse with deleting. Snapchat's help article says clearing a conversation doesn't delete any saved or sent content. It only removes that chat from your Chat feed, so your screen looks tidier. Your friend's copy stays exactly as it was.
To clear a conversation on iPhone:
- Tap your profile, then the gear icon to open Settings.
- Go to My Privacy and Data.
- Under Manage My Data, tap Clear Data, then Clear Conversations.
- Tap the X next to the name you want to clear.
On Android the path is the same up to My Privacy and Data, then choose Clear Conversation under Manage My Data. Menus vary by app version, so look for those words if your screen differs.
How long Snapchat keeps chat messages before deleting them
You may not need to delete much at all, because Snapchat clears chats by default. Its help article on when Snapchat deletes Snaps and Chats says one-to-one and group chats are deleted 24 hours after everyone has viewed them, or 31 days after they were sent, whichever comes first. Community group chats go 7 days after everyone views them.

Saving a message, replying to it or reacting to it keeps it around longer. To save, tap a message and it turns gray; everyone in the chat can see you saved it. Tap it again to unsave.
Change the Delete Chats timer for a Snapchat conversation
If you'd like messages in a particular chat to vanish faster or stay put, change its timer.
- Swipe right from the Camera to open the Chat screen.
- Press and hold the friend's or group's name.
- Tap Chat and Notification Settings.
- Tap Delete Chats and choose After Viewing, 24 Hours After Viewing, 7 Days After Viewing or Never.
Anyone in the conversation can change this, and Snapchat shows a status message when it changes. Older messages keep the setting they were sent with, so the new timer only applies from that point.
Deleting Snapchat messages vs deleting Snaps and Stories
Chat messages, Snaps and Stories each have their own rules. If the thing you regret is something you posted to your Story, that's a different process, and my guide on deleting a Snapchat Story or a single Snap covers it. Snaps sent to friends are normally deleted once everyone has viewed them, and unopened ones go after 31 days.
| What you want | What to use |
|---|---|
| Remove one message you sent | Press and hold it, then Delete |
| Tidy your Chat feed | Clear Conversation (deletes nothing for the other person) |
| Make a chat vanish faster | Delete Chats timer in Chat and Notification Settings |
| Stop someone messaging you | Block or report them |
If deleting a Snapchat message won't work
- Check it's your own message. Messages from other people can't be deleted.
- Update the app, since an outdated version can delay deletions.
- Check your connection, then open the chat again.
If you're dealing with threats or harassment in messages, don't just delete them. Report the account to Snapchat and, if you're in danger, contact the police.
Frequently asked questions
How do I delete messages on Snapchat?
Open the chat, press and hold a message you sent and tap Delete. You can only delete your own messages, Snaps and media you sent, not messages from other people.

Yes. Snapchat's help article says your friends can see that a message was deleted, and they may have taken a screenshot before you removed it.
Does Clear Conversation delete messages for both people?

How long does Snapchat keep chats?
By default, one-to-one and group chats are deleted 24 hours after everyone has viewed them or 31 days after sending, whichever comes first.
Can I delete a message someone else sent me?
