Free AI Recipe Generators (2026): 10 Tools Compared

An AI recipe generator suggests a recipe from the ingredients you have, the diet you follow or the dish you describe. Some use AI to write new recipes and meal plans, some search existing recipes by ingredient and some are general AI assistants that handle cooking too. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Half a pepper, two eggs and some leftover rice. That's the moment people reach for a recipe generator, and it's a good use of AI: turning what you've already bought into dinner rather than another shopping trip.

The ten tools below cover AI recipe writers, ingredient search tools and meal planners. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you'd rather prompt an assistant yourself, my AI prompts for weekly meal planning give you a head start.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free or open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Which recipe generator suits how you cook

  • Recipe ideas in a general AI chat: ChatGPT.
  • Meals linked to a health goal: ChefGPT.
  • New recipes and meal plans from a prompt: DishGen or PlateAI.
  • Weekly plans with a shopping list: FoodiePrep or Samsung Food.
  • Using up what's in the fridge: MyFridgeFood or Supercook.
  • Step-by-step cooking: SideChef.
  • Picking dinner at random: TheRandomRecipe.

A cooking time isn't a safety check

The Food Standards Agency says to check food is cooked completely before serving, for example that it's steaming hot. With meats like chicken, it says to cut into the thickest part and check there's no pink meat left and that the juices run clear.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

AI recipes usually give you a time and a temperature, and those are guesses about your oven, your pan and the size of your chicken thighs. Treat the time as a starting point. Before you serve, do the check the Food Standards Agency describes, and if an AI recipe tells you something is safe to eat undercooked, don't take its word for it.

AI recipe writer, ingredient search or meal planner?

An AI recipe writer creates a new recipe from your prompt. It's flexible and quick, and it can invent combinations that haven't been tested in a real kitchen.

Ingredient search tools match what you have to recipes that already exist. They're less creative, but the recipes have usually been cooked before.

Meal planners look at the whole week. They save recipes, plan dinners and build a shopping list, which is where most of the time goes.

Six things to tell a recipe generator

  1. Which ingredients do you need to use up?
  2. Does anyone have an allergy or avoid certain foods?
  3. How much time do you have?
  4. Which equipment do you own?
  5. How many people are eating?
  6. How confident a cook are you?

Signs an AI recipe needs a second look

  • The quantities look strange. Compare with a known recipe.
  • A step makes no sense. Ask the tool to explain.
  • The cooking time feels short. Check doneness.
  • An allergen sneaks in. Read every ingredient.

Do you make an AI recipe generator? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on cooking with AI recipes

Use AI for the idea and your own judgement for the cooking. Ask for two or three options, pick the one closest to food you already know how to make, and read the method through before you start. If something sounds odd, like a strange quantity or a step that makes no sense, it probably is.

Planning the week too? My prompts for meal prep and a weekly shopping list turn the recipes into a plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI recipe generator?

It's a tool that suggests a recipe from the ingredients you have, your diet or a dish you describe.

Are AI recipe generators free?

Several have a free version or free plan. Check the free plan column above, then confirm on each vendor's site.

Can AI make a recipe from what's in my fridge?

Yes. Tell it the ingredients you have, and it will suggest recipes that use them.

Are AI recipes safe to follow?

Check the method and the cooking. The Food Standards Agency says food should be steaming hot, with no pink meat left in chicken.

Can a recipe generator handle allergies?

You can ask it to avoid ingredients, but always read the full ingredient list yourself before cooking for someone with an allergy.

What's the difference between an AI recipe and a recipe search?

An AI recipe is newly written for your prompt, while a recipe search finds existing recipes that match your ingredients.
