To hide a column in Google Sheets on a computer, click the column letter, right-click and choose Hide column. Click the small arrow that appears to bring it back. Hidden isn't private, though: anyone with edit access can unhide it.
Some columns are working notes. Others hold numbers you need for a formula but don't want a client to stare at. Hiding a column in Google Sheets tidies the view without deleting a thing, which is why it's one of the first tricks worth learning.
I've followed Google's help pages for the steps, and I'll be straight about one point: hiding is for neatness, not secrecy. More on that below.
Hiding a column in Google Sheets on your computer
- Open your spreadsheet in Google Sheets on your computer.
- Click the column letter to highlight the column.
- To hide several columns, hold the command key and click each one. Google's help mentions the command key, which is the Mac key, so use your own keyboard's equivalent if you're not on a Mac.
- Right-click and choose Hide column.
An arrow appears where the column used to be, so you can see that something is tucked away.
Unhiding columns in Google Sheets
Click the arrow where the column letter used to be. Google's help describes it just like that. The hidden column comes back with its data intact, because nothing was ever removed.
Hiding columns in the Sheets app on Android
- Open the spreadsheet in the Google Sheets app on your Android device.
- Touch and hold a row or column.
- In the menu that appears, tap Hide column.
Google's help page doesn't list unhide steps for Android, so if you need a column back, the quickest reliable route is to unhide it in a computer browser.
Hiding columns in the Sheets app on iPhone and iPad
- Open the spreadsheet in the Google Sheets app.
- Tap the column you want to hide.
- In the menu, use the right arrow and choose Hide column.
Hiding a column versus hiding a whole sheet tab
They're different features. Google's help on protecting and hiding sheets says hiding a sheet is not the same as protecting it, and that editors can still unhide a hidden sheet. The same logic applies to hidden columns: anyone who can edit can bring them back by clicking the arrow.
Why hiding columns in Google Sheets isn't a privacy tool
This matters if you share a Sheet with clients or contractors. Google says protection shouldn't be used as a security measure, because anyone with access can still print, copy, paste, or import and export copies. A hidden column is no stronger. If the data in it's private, such as personal details or internal notes, don't share that file at all. Make a separate copy without those columns.
When hiding columns helps a small business
- Sharing a customer list: hide the notes column before you screen-share on a call.
- Planning sheets: tuck helper columns away so the finished view looks calm.
- Reports for a client: hide the working columns and leave only the ones they need.
- Wide trackers: hide columns you rarely use so the important ones fit on screen.
When a Sheet is going to a client, I'd also look at my notes on filling in a Google Docs template correctly, because the same care over presentation applies. If you'd prefer to enter data through a form instead, see my comparison of Google Forms alternatives.
A tidy way to share a Google Sheet with hidden columns
If you want to share a clean view without risking anything, a short checklist helps. None of this comes from a single Google page, it's just the routine I'd follow myself:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Duplicate the tab so your full working version stays untouched.
- On the copy, delete or move out anything private rather than only hiding it.
- Hide only the helper columns that are harmless but distracting.
- Open the copy in a fresh browser window to see what a viewer would see.
- Share the copy, and keep the original somewhere only you can reach.
Hiding is still great for readability. The mistake is treating it as a lock. A neat Sheet with a few columns tucked away looks professional, and the arrows at the gaps tell anyone who's curious that more is available if they have the right access.
One last habit: give every column a clear heading before you hide any of them. When a Sheet has been passed between a few people, a gap with an arrow and no obvious heading nearby is how data gets forgotten. A short note in the first row, or a line in the sharing message saying which columns are tucked away, saves someone a confused afternoon.
If you can't hide a column in Google Sheets
- Check you have edit access, not view-only.
- Make sure you clicked the column letter so the whole column is highlighted.
- On a phone, touch and hold (Android) or tap (iPhone and iPad) the column to bring up the menu.
- If you can't find the arrow to unhide, look at the edges of the columns either side of the gap.
- Reload the page and try again.
