How to Get Cited by ChatGPT in 2026

In this blog post I am going to show you how to get cited by ChatGPT, because when it answers a question in your field and names its sources, you want to be one of them.

ChatGPT now has search built in. Ask it something current and it goes out to the web, reads a handful of pages, and links the ones it used. Being one of those linked sources puts your name in front of a huge audience at the exact moment they are looking for an answer. Most businesses in your space have not even thought about this yet, which is the opportunity.

So here is how ChatGPT decides who to quote, and how you earn your way in.

How do you get cited by ChatGPT?

To get cited by ChatGPT, make sure its crawler can reach you, be visible in Bing (which powers a lot of its search), and build a presence on the sources it leans on most, especially Reddit and Wikipedia. Then structure your own pages so a clear answer can be lifted cleanly. ChatGPT favours sources it can find, parse and trust, so being present and quotable across those places is the work.

How ChatGPT chooses what to cite

ChatGPT does not work quite like Google. A few things shape who it pulls in.

It leans on Bing. A large part of ChatGPT's web search is powered by the Bing index, so your visibility in Bing matters more than most people realise. If you have ignored Bing for years, you have been ignoring part of the ChatGPT supply chain.

It weights certain sources heavily. Analysis of ChatGPT citations consistently shows Wikipedia and Reddit appearing far more than their size would suggest, alongside established publications. OpenAI also has content deals with various publishers. So a mention in the right third-party place can carry more weight than your own homepage.

It needs to read you. ChatGPT has its own crawler, GPTBot. If your site blocks it in robots.txt, you remove yourself from the pool entirely. Many sites block it without realising what it costs them.

It rewards clean, quotable content. Once it is reading your page, the same rule applies as everywhere else: a clear, self-contained answer near a relevant heading gets lifted. A buried one does not.

How to get cited by ChatGPT, step by step

1. Let GPTBot in

Check your robots.txt. If GPTBot or ChatGPT-User are disallowed, ChatGPT cannot read your site to cite it. Unless you have a firm reason to block AI training, allowing the search crawler is the price of being quotable. This is a five-minute check that some sites get badly wrong.

2. Get visible in Bing

Submit your site to Bing Webmaster Tools and treat Bing as a real channel, not an afterthought. Because Bing feeds a chunk of ChatGPT's search, ranking there feeds your chances of being cited. It is far less competitive than Google, so wins come faster.

3. Build presence on Reddit and Wikipedia

This is the lever most people skip. ChatGPT quotes Reddit and Wikipedia heavily. So show up there honestly: answer real questions in the relevant subreddits as a useful human, not a billboard, and make sure any Wikipedia or Wikidata presence about you or your topic is accurate. These third-party mentions often do more than your own content.

4. Make your own pages quotable

Lead each section with a direct answer of around 40 to 60 words. Use headings that match how people ask the question. Add original data and clear definitions, because ChatGPT favours specific, trustworthy passages over vague marketing copy.

5. Keep it current

ChatGPT's search favours fresh, relevant material for anything time-sensitive. Update your key pages, show when they were last updated, and keep your facts current. Stale content loses to dated, maintained content.

What people get wrong

They optimise only for Google and forget that ChatGPT runs partly on Bing. Ignoring Bing means ignoring part of how ChatGPT finds sources.

They try to game Reddit with promotional posts, which gets them downvoted, removed, or banned. Reddit rewards genuine usefulness and punishes marketing on sight. The only version that works is showing up as a real, helpful participant over time.

And some block GPTBot by accident, through a plugin or a cautious developer, then wonder why they never get cited. You cannot be quoted by a system that is not allowed to read you.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing to search the web? Largely Bing. ChatGPT's web search has leaned on the Bing index, which is why your Bing visibility matters for being cited. It is one of the few places where optimising for Bing pays off more directly than optimising for Google.

Do I need to allow GPTBot to get cited by ChatGPT? To be cited from your own site through its search, yes, the crawler needs access. If you block GPTBot in robots.txt, ChatGPT cannot read your pages to quote them. You can still be cited via third-party mentions, but you are giving up your own site as a source.

Why does ChatGPT cite Reddit and Wikipedia so much? Because they are large, structured, and heavily trusted, and OpenAI has data arrangements that include such sources. For you, that means a relevant Reddit answer or an accurate Wikipedia entry can carry more weight toward citation than a page on your own site.

Can a small business get cited by ChatGPT? Yes. It rewards being findable, readable and trustworthy more than being big. A small business that is visible in Bing, present on Reddit, and clear on its own pages can be cited ahead of larger competitors who have done none of that.

How do I check if ChatGPT is citing me? Ask ChatGPT your most important questions with search enabled and see which sources it links. Do this for your top twenty queries, note where a competitor appears and you do not, and re-check monthly as its behaviour shifts.

Final word

Getting cited by ChatGPT runs on a slightly different map from Google, and that is good news, because most of your competitors are still reading the old one. They are pouring everything into Google rankings while ChatGPT quietly builds its answers from Bing, Reddit, Wikipedia and the pages clear enough to quote.

Show up in those places, let the crawler read you, and write answers worth lifting. Do that while the field is still empty, and you become the name ChatGPT reaches for in your space.
