There's no offline filter in the Google Play Store, so search for offline games or a genre plus offline, then read each listing's description and small print. Some games carry an Offline tag, but it only runs a search. Install the game on Wi-Fi, open it once, then turn on airplane mode and play a full level to be sure.

Finding offline games on the Play Store should be simple. In practice, a game can be tagged Offline and still tell you, in the small print, that it needs a connection. I've seen exactly that on one of the biggest card games in the store.
This guide sticks to what Google's own help pages and the Play Store itself show. Where Google doesn't offer something, like an offline filter, I'll say so plainly so you don't waste time looking for it.
Is there an offline filter in the Google Play Store?
No. I couldn't find any offline filter or setting described in Google Play Help, and the store doesn't offer one in search. What you do get is a set of clues on each game's listing, plus a couple of places in Google's own apps that are built for offline play.
One clue you'll see is a row of tags under a game's description. Some games carry an Offline tag. On the listings I checked, tapping that tag simply runs a Play Store search for offline games. It's a handy shortcut, but it isn't a guarantee, as you'll see below.
Where should you look on a Play Store listing?
| Where to look | What it tells you | What it doesn't tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Search for offline games | A list of games that match those words | Whether each result works fully offline |
| Tags under About this game | Some listings carry an Offline tag | It's a search shortcut, not a check |
| About this game text and small print | Many developers state offline play or a connection requirement here | Which features stop working offline |
| Contains ads label | The game shows ads | Whether it will run when ads can't load |
| Data safety section | What data the developer says the app collects and shares | Whether the game runs offline |
| Play Games app, Google Built-In Games | A few games Google says you can play while offline | It's a small selection |
How do you search the Play Store for games that work without internet?
- Open the Play Store, tap Games, then tap the search bar and type offline games, or a genre plus offline, such as offline racing or offline puzzle.
- Open a game that looks right and tap About this game to read the full description.
- Scroll to the end of the description and read the small print. Look for wording such as works offline, no internet needed, or internet connection required.
- Check the tags under the description, and whether the listing says Contains ads or In-app purchases.
- Install the game on Wi-Fi, open it once and let it finish downloading any extra files.
- Close it, turn on airplane mode, open it again and play a full level or round.
That last step is the one that settles it. On Android, Google's Pixel help says you can swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Airplane mode, or go to Settings, then Network and internet. Menu names vary between phone makers, so look for something similar on yours.

Why can a game tagged Offline still need internet?
Here's the example that caught my eye. Microsoft Solitaire Collection on Google Play carries the Offline tag. Its own small print says a persistent internet connection is required. Microsoft's support pages, meanwhile, say its classic modes can be played offline. All three can be partly true, which is why the airplane-mode test matters more than any label.
In general, games that run offline often still go online for some things: the first download of extra files, ads, signing in, cloud saves, daily rewards and leaderboards. A game can be perfectly playable offline while those extras simply wait for a connection.
Does Google have its own offline games?
Yes, a few. Google Play Help says you can play a small number of games, such as Solitaire or PAC-MAN, at no charge or while offline from the Play Games app. Open Play Games, tap Home and scroll to the Google Built-In Games section, then tap Play on the game you want.

Some Android phones also have an Instant Games tab. Google's Android Help says that on select devices you can switch on offline saving in Home Settings and tap an Available offline chip. There are limits: you need to play a game while online first, and only a small number of recently played, lightweight games are kept for offline play. If your phone doesn't have the tab, Google says the feature isn't supported on that model.
What are the red flags on an offline game listing?
- Small print that says internet connection required: believe the small print over the tag until you've tested it.
- Online-only modes in the description: words like PvP, live events, clans or real-time matches usually mean those parts need a connection.
- A big extra download after install: the game may need Wi-Fi the first time you open it, so do that at home.
- Reviews mentioning connection errors: sort by most recent and skim for offline complaints.
- Downloads from outside Google Play: stick to the store. Microsoft's own support for its games, for example, says it can't guarantee support for copies downloaded from other sites.

Frequently asked questions
Does Google Play have an offline games filter?
No. Google Play doesn't offer an offline filter. Search for offline games, read each listing's description and small print, and test the game in airplane mode.
What does the Offline tag on a Play Store game mean?
On the listings I checked, tapping the Offline tag runs a Play Store search for offline games. It's a useful shortcut, but always read the game's small print and test it.
Does the Data safety section show if a game works offline?
No. Google describes the Data safety section as the developer's summary of what data an app collects and shares. It says nothing about offline play.
How do I test if an Android game works offline?
Install the game on Wi-Fi, open it once, close it, turn on airplane mode, then open it again and play a full level. If it asks for a connection, that mode needs internet.
Are there offline games built into Google Play?
Yes. Google Play Help says the Play Games app has a few built-in games, such as Solitaire and PAC-MAN, that you can play while offline.
