Can You Use Apple Pay on Amazon? What Works Instead

No, you can't choose Apple Pay at checkout on Amazon.com: Amazon's list of accepted payment methods covers credit, debit and gift cards, FSA, HSA, EBT and OTC Benefits cards, but not Apple Pay. The easy fix is to add the same card you use in Apple Wallet directly to your Amazon Wallet.

It's a fair thing to expect. Apple Pay works almost everywhere on an iPhone, so its absence at Amazon checkout feels like a bug. It isn't. Amazon simply doesn't list it, and its help page tells you what it does take. Here's what that means in practice and the cleanest way round it.

What Amazon.com accepts

Payment methodAccepted on Amazon.com?
Apple PayNot listed
Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover)Yes
Amazon Store Card and Amazon Secured CardYes
Checking accountYes
Visa, Mastercard or American Express prepaid or gift cardsYes
Amazon.com Gift CardsYes
FSA and HSA cardsYes, for eligible items, U.S. billing addresses only
EBT cardsYes, for eligible items
OTC Benefits cardsYes, OTC Network cards only, for eligible items

The simple workaround

Apple Pay isn't a separate account with its own money. It's a way of paying with a card you've already added to Apple Wallet. So the card behind your Apple Pay, whether it's a Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover card, can usually be added to Amazon directly.

  1. Open the Amazon app or website and go to Your Account, then Your Payments or Amazon Wallet.
  2. Choose to add a credit or debit card.
  3. Enter the card details for the card you normally use in Apple Wallet.
  4. Save it; Amazon lets you add or change cards in your Wallet without placing an order.
  5. Pick that card at checkout next time.

You'll find the card number in your banking app or on the physical card. Some banks show a separate device number inside Apple Wallet, which is why you should use your actual card details, not what Apple Wallet displays.

The catch: one card per order

This trips people up when they try to recreate the flexibility of Apple Pay. Amazon says you can split a payment between one accepted credit or debit card and an Amazon.com Gift Card, but you can't split one order across several credit or debit cards. So if you're trying to use up a few small card balances, a gift card plus one main card is the only split that works.

HSA, FSA, EBT and OTC cards

Amazon accepts these, but with conditions. FSA and HSA cards only work for eligible items and only with U.S. billing addresses. EBT cards work on eligible items. OTC Benefits cards must be on the OTC Network, and Amazon asks for a default payment method too, so anything not covered, such as ineligible items or fees, goes on that card. Check the item is eligible before you rely on a benefits card for the whole basket.

What about prepaid and gift cards?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express prepaid or gift cards are on Amazon's accepted list, which is handy if someone gave you one. If it doesn't go through, check the card has been registered with your name and address where the issuer asks for that, since a billing mismatch is a common reason for a decline.

Why a card might not save

  1. Check the billing address matches the one your bank holds for the card.
  2. For prepaid or gift cards, register the card with the issuer first if it asks.
  3. Make sure the card is a type Amazon lists: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, an Amazon card, a prepaid card, or a benefits card for eligible items.
  4. Try adding it on the website if the app keeps failing, or the other way round.

Most failed saves come down to the address. Apple Pay hides that step, because Apple Wallet already knows it, so it's easy to forget the details your bank has on file when you type a card in by hand.

Apple Pay vs Amazon Pay

They sound similar but they're different things. Amazon Pay is Amazon's own button that lets you pay on other websites using the cards stored in your Amazon account. Apple Pay is Apple's wallet. Neither lets you use the other's wallet at checkout, so on Amazon.com you're paying with the cards stored in Amazon.

Is it safe to store a card on Amazon?

Many people like Apple Pay because the merchant doesn't see the card number. When you store a card on Amazon instead, Amazon keeps the card details in your account. If that worries you, a credit card rather than a debit card limits your exposure if something goes wrong, and turning on two-step verification for your Amazon account adds protection. And for Amazon Store Cards, Amazon says the CVV is required on every transaction.

My verdict

Don't waste time hunting for an Apple Pay button on Amazon. Add the card you already use in Apple Wallet to Amazon once, and checkout is just as quick.
