To delete a Slack workspace, the Primary Owner clicks Admin, then Workspace settings, scrolls to Delete Workspace, ticks the confirmation box, enters their password and clicks Yes, delete my workspace. The catch: Slack says deleted messages and files can't be retrieved, so export your data first.
Maybe the project's over, the community never took off, or you've moved your team to another tool. Whatever the reason, an empty Slack workspace still sits there with everyone's old messages in it. Deleting it closes the door for good, and that's exactly why it's worth slowing down for five minutes first.
Slack only lets one person do this, and it can't be reversed. I'll go through who that is, the steps from Slack's help centre, how to save a copy of your data beforehand and the gentler options if deleting is more than you need.
Who can delete a Slack workspace
Slack's help is blunt about it: only the Primary Owner of a workspace can delete it. Admins, regular owners and members won't see the option. If you're not the Primary Owner, the only route is to ask them to do it.
If you set the workspace up yourself, you're almost certainly the Primary Owner. If someone else set it up and has since left the business, sort out ownership before anything else, because nobody else can delete it on their behalf.
Exporting your Slack workspace data before you delete
Slack says messages and files can't be retrieved after a workspace is deleted, and it recommends exporting your data first. For a business workspace, I'd treat this as compulsory. Old approvals, client decisions and shared links have a way of being needed six months later.
Slack's export steps for most workspaces:
- Go to Admin, then Workspace settings.
- Open Security, then Import and export data.
- Choose the Export tab and pick a date range.
- Start the export.
- When Slack emails you, open your workspace's export page and download the ZIP file under Ready for download.
Know what you're getting. Slack's help says Workspace Owners and Admins can export messages and file links from public channels in JSON format. Private channels and direct messages aren't part of a standard export. On Slack's free version, file links only go back 90 days. So if important files live only in Slack, download the ones you need separately.
Deleting a Slack workspace step by step
Once your export is safe, here's Slack's route on desktop:
- Click Admin in the sidebar.
- Select Workspace settings from the menu.
- Scroll down to Delete Workspace and click it.
- Tick the box confirming you want to delete the workspace.
- Enter your Slack account password.
- Click Yes, delete my workspace.
Slack's help lists these steps for desktop, so use the desktop app or a browser rather than your phone.
If Slack asks for a password you don't have
Plenty of people sign in to Slack with Google or another single sign-on service and never set a Slack password. Slack's help covers this: if you sign in with single sign-on and forgot your password, you can reset it, and if you never set one, you can request a reset to add one. Do that first, then come back to the delete screen.
Do you need to delete the Slack workspace at all?
Deleting is the nuclear option. Before you go there, check whether one of these does the job:

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
| What you want | What Slack offers |
|---|---|
| A new name or web address | Change it under Workspace Name and URL, no delete needed |
| To stop using it yourself | Sign out, or deactivate your own account |
| To clear out old topics | Archive or delete individual channels |
| To close it for everyone | Delete the workspace (Primary Owner only) |
Slack specifically says that if you only want a new name or URL, you don't need to delete. That's handy after a rebrand: you keep the history and everyone's logins, and just change the label.
Telling your team before you delete a Slack workspace
Deleting a workspace removes it for everybody in it, not just you. Give people notice so they can save anything personal, and tell them where conversations are moving next. A short message pinned in your main channel a week or two ahead is usually enough:
- The date the workspace will close.
- Where the team will talk from now on.
- A reminder to download any files they need.
- Who to contact with questions.
For a client or community workspace, I'd send the same note by email as well, since some members may not open Slack often.
Closing down other tools at the same time
If you're winding down a project or a side business, Slack is rarely the only account involved. It's worth making a list of every tool tied to it and closing them in one sitting. My guides to deleting a Zoom account and deleting a CapCut account cover two that often get forgotten.
If you can't delete your Slack workspace
- Check you're the Primary Owner. If not, ask whoever is.
- Look under Admin, then Workspace settings, and scroll right to the bottom for Delete Workspace.
- Reset or set your Slack password if you normally use single sign-on.
- Switch to the desktop app or a browser.
- If the option still isn't there, contact Slack through its help centre.
