How to Delete a Card in Trello (and Why to Archive First)

To delete a card in Trello, open the card and choose Archive from its actions menu first. Once it's archived, a Delete option appears; click it and confirm, because Trello treats deletion as permanent. If you just want the card off your board, archiving alone is safer, since you can restore it any time.

Trello is deliberately cautious about deleting cards, and once you know why, it makes sense. There's no delete button on the front of a card. Instead, Trello asks you to archive first, then delete, because a deleted card is gone forever. Most of the time, archiving is all you need. Here's how to do both, how to find and restore archived cards, and when deleting is the right call.

Delete a card: two steps

  1. Click the card to open it.
  2. In the card's actions menu, choose Archive.
  3. A new Delete option appears. Click it.
  4. Confirm the deletion.

Atlassian's help page explains the extra step: to delete a card, you must first archive it, and because deleting is unrecoverable and permanent, Trello asks you to confirm.

Archive a card (the safer option)

  • Open the card and choose Archive from the actions menu.
  • Or hover over the card, click the pencil icon and choose Archive.
  • Or hover over the card and press c on your keyboard.
  • For completed cards, hover and click the archive icon.

The c shortcut is my absolute favourite. Running down a busy board and pressing c on every finished card clears the whole thing in seconds.

Archive or delete?

Here's the insight that changes how people use Trello: archived cards don't expire. Atlassian says they remain archived indefinitely and won't be deleted automatically. So there's no pressure to delete old cards to keep things tidy; archiving does that job without the risk.

Why archiving keeps boards fast

Atlassian notes that archived items aren't loaded when a board opens, so archiving cards improves performance on large boards. If your board has hundreds of done cards and feels sluggish, archive them in bulk and it should speed up noticeably.

Find and restore an archived card

  1. Open the board menu.
  2. Choose More, then Archived items.
  3. Find the card. You can search the archived list.
  4. Click Restore to send it back to the board.

Trello's search bar also finds archived cards that match your search terms, which is handy when you can't remember which board something was on.

When deleting is the right choice

  • Duplicate cards created by accident.
  • Test cards from setting up a board.
  • A card containing information that shouldn't be stored, such as a password pasted by mistake.

For anything else, archive it and move on with your day. Atlassian's own advice is that if you just want to clear a card off your board, archive it so you can access it again later if needed.

Deleting files on cards

If a card has attachments, deleting the card also removes those attachments from Trello. Download anything you need first, because once the card's gone, so are its files. Archiving keeps the attachments safe along with the card.

Deleting cards on your phone

In the Trello mobile app, open the card and look for the archive option in the card's menu. Once it's archived, you can delete it from the archived items, just like on the desktop. For bulk tidying, though, the desktop and the c shortcut are much faster.

Delete a whole list or board?

Cards aren't the only things you can archive. Trello lets you archive a whole list, which moves all its cards out of view in one go, and close a board when a project ends. Closing a board hides it without deleting it, and you can reopen it later. As with cards, these gentler options are usually the better choice, because getting things back is easy and deleting is final.

Who can delete cards?

On a shared board, anyone with edit access can usually archive cards, and then delete them. If you're worried about teammates deleting work by accident, agree a simple rule: archive, never delete, unless the card is a duplicate. Because archived cards stay put indefinitely, nobody loses anything by following that rule, and the board stays clean.

Search archived cards

When you need an old card, you don't have to scroll through the archive. Trello's search finds archived cards that match your search terms, and you can use the same search operators as the main search bar to narrow things down, which is a huge help on boards that have been running for years.

Keep boards tidy without deleting

  • Archive Done cards weekly.
  • Archive whole lists when a phase of a project ends.
  • Close boards for finished projects instead of deleting them.

If you're deciding whether Trello is the right fit for your team, my roundups of Asana alternatives and ClickUp alternatives compare the main options side by side.

My verdict

Open the card, choose Archive, then Delete and confirm. But in most cases, stop at Archive: archived cards stay safe indefinitely, keep your board fast, and can be restored from Archived items whenever you need them. Delete only duplicates, test cards and things that shouldn't be stored at all.
