How to Crop in Illustrator (Crop Image vs Masking)

To crop in Illustrator, select the image, click Crop image in the Quick actions section of the Properties panel, drag the crop handles and click Apply. That permanently deletes the rest. To keep the hidden parts editable, click Mask instead, which hides them behind a shape.

Cropping in Illustrator is not like cropping in Photoshop, because there are two different tools and they behave very differently. One cuts the picture permanently. The other only hides part of it behind a shape, and you can change your mind. Knowing which you want, before you click, saves a lot of frustration. Here are both, plus the condition that stops Crop image working on linked pictures.

Option 1: Crop image (permanent)

  1. Place your picture with File, then Place, or paste it into the document.
  2. Select the image.
  3. In the Properties panel, find Quick actions and click Crop image.
  4. A cropping box appears. Drag the crop handles to remove the parts you don't want.
  5. Click Apply.

Adobe says Illustrator identifies the visually significant portions of the image and suggests a starting crop, so you may only need to nudge the handles. While you're cropping, the PPI setting lets you lower the resolution to make the image lighter. Once you click Apply, the crop is permanent, so work on a copy if the original matters.

The embedding warning

Crop image only works on an embedded picture. If your image is linked to a file on your computer, Illustrator shows a warning dialog. Click OK to embed the image and carry on, or Cancel to leave it linked and stop. Embedding makes the file larger, but the picture travels with the document.

Option 2: Mask the image (reversible)

  1. Select the image.
  2. In the Properties panel, under Quick actions, click Mask.
  3. Illustrator creates a shape the same size and shape as the image and groups the two as a clip group.
  4. Edit the mask when you want to reframe the picture.

It looks as though nothing happened, and that's normal. Click away and then back on the image with the Selection tool and the Properties panel shows Clip group. The benefit is that masking hides the rest of the picture instead of deleting it, so you can edit the hidden parts later.

Change what a mask shows

  • Edit contents: select the masked image and click Edit contents at the top of the Properties panel to scale, rotate, move or replace the picture inside the mask.
  • Edit clipping path: click this button to select the mask itself and transform it separately from the image.
  • From the Layers panel: select the group containing the clipping path and choose Object, Clipping Mask, Edit Mask. Click anywhere outside the mask to exit.

Adobe adds a point that makes sense once you know it: parts of the artwork outside a clipping mask aren't visible, but they can still be edited. That's the whole point of masking.

Cropping shapes and other artwork

Masks aren't just for pictures. Put a shape on top of other artwork, select both, and use the Object menu to make a clipping mask, and anything outside the shape is hidden. That's the standard way to trim a pattern into a circle or a logo into a badge. If you want to cut the artwork itself rather than hide it, that's a different job for the Shape Builder or Pathfinder tools.

Practical tips

  • Mask first and crop at the end, once the layout is settled.
  • Keep a copy of the original image outside Illustrator, in case you embed and crop it.
  • Use the PPI setting when cropping if you need to cut down the file size, but remember you can't raise the resolution later.
  • Check the edges at full zoom after you apply a crop.

If you design logos or social graphics, my list of free logo makers and my notes on graphic design terms might help too.

A short workflow that avoids regret

  1. Place the picture and keep a copy of the original file outside Illustrator.
  2. Mask the picture while you're experimenting with the layout, so nothing is lost.
  3. When the design is approved, decide whether you need to reduce the file size.
  4. If you do, embed the image, use Crop image, lower the PPI if the image is bigger than it needs to be, and apply.
  5. Save under a new name so you can always go back to the masked version.

Why a cropped picture can look soft

If you crop a small piece out of a picture and then enlarge it, it will look soft, because there are fewer pixels in the piece you've kept. That's true in any program. Lowering the PPI while you crop is a one-way step too, so it's a reminder to start with the biggest, best original you've got. If the crop makes the picture too small to be useful, go back to the source and pick a larger file.

My verdict

If you're certain, use Crop image and click Apply. If you're not, use Mask, because you can reopen it and adjust it any time. If Crop image refuses to work, check the picture is embedded, not linked.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop an image in Illustrator?

Select the image, click Crop image in the Quick actions section of the Properties panel, drag the handles and click Apply.

What's the difference between Crop image and masking?

Crop image permanently deletes the parts you remove. Masking hides them behind a shape so you can edit them later.

Why can't I crop my image?

Crop image needs the picture to be embedded. If it's linked, Illustrator warns you and offers to embed it.

How do I edit a mask?

Select the masked image and click Edit contents or Edit clipping path in the Properties panel.

Can I lower the resolution while cropping?

Yes. Use the PPI setting in the Properties panel while cropping. You can lower it but not raise it later.
