AI Gamertag Generators (2026): 10 Tools Compared

A gamertag generator suggests usernames for Xbox, PlayStation, Steam and other gaming platforms from a keyword, a theme or a style such as funny, sweaty or clean. The useful ones let you set the platform, the length or the genre. Check availability on each platform before you settle. Ten options follow, in no particular order.

Your gamertag is the first thing other players see, the name a caster reads out and the handle your friends type when they invite you. It's worth more than the default string of numbers you were given at sign-up.

The ten generators below range from bulk lists and funny tags to tools tuned for Fortnite, Minecraft or Xbox. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you stream as well as play, my guide to changing your Twitch username keeps your handles matching.

Gamertag generators compared

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Ten gamertag generators to try

3STF

Best for: Squads naming several accounts at once, since it creates up to a hundred tags per batch and runs entirely in the browser.

CodeItBro

Best for: Casual players who want a silly, punny, foodie or absurd tag that makes the lobby laugh, with optional keywords mixed in.

Effie

Best for: Players who want to pick a theme and a style first, then let the AI build a list of tags around those choices.

GamerBolt

Best for: Choosing a tag for PlayStation, Xbox or Steam with a set tone and length, then asking the AI to pick the strongest from the batch.

Redstag Labs

Best for: Xbox players who want a clean, fierce, funny or four-letter tag, or ideas built from their own word as the starting point.

Social Username Checker

Best for: Players who want a sweaty Fortnite tag, a clean Minecraft name or a pro Steam handle, with presets for each game.

Softonic

Best for: Anyone who wants one tag on Xbox, PSN and Steam, with guidance on checking availability and keeping real names out of it.

The Story Shack

Best for: Rolling a few rounds of punchy, stylised handles for shooters, MMOs and fighting games, then mixing the parts you like.

UsernameGenerator.com

Best for: Gamers who want endless tags grown from one short keyword, with no email and nothing to download.

Xbit Labs

Best for: Building a tag around a genre such as FPS, MOBA or horror, then decorating it with symbols or leet-style numbers.

Find the right gamertag tool

  • Naming a whole squad at once: 3STF.
  • Something funny for casual lobbies: CodeItBro.
  • Presets for Fortnite, Minecraft or Steam: Social Username Checker.
  • A tag that works across Xbox, PSN and Steam: Softonic.
  • A short, clean Xbox tag: Redstag Labs.

Changing your PlayStation online ID

PlayStation's support page says you can change your online ID as many times as you want, but only the first change is free; a charge applies after that. You can also choose to show your old ID next to the new one for 30 days, and you're signed out of all devices once the change goes through.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

That makes the first change the one to get right. Generate a long list, live with your shortlist for a few days, then use the free change on a tag you'll still like when you're older. Some older games can also behave oddly after an ID change, so check the games you play most before you switch.

How to choose a gamertag you won't regret

  1. Pick a tone: funny, fierce, clean or mysterious.
  2. Keep it short enough to read on a scoreboard.
  3. Avoid your real name, birth year or school.
  4. Check it's free on every platform you use.
  5. Say it out loud as if a caster is reading it.

One tag across every platform

A single tag across Xbox, PlayStation, Steam and Discord is easier for friends to find and stronger if you ever stream. If the exact tag is taken somewhere, add a short suffix rather than switching to a different word altogether.

Free games are a good place to test a new tag before you commit it everywhere; my list of ways to claim free PC games has a few to start with.

Gamertag mistakes

  • Personal details. They make you easy to track down.
  • Offensive words. Platforms can force a change or ban the account.
  • Strings of numbers. They look like a default account.
  • Hard spellings. Friends can't invite a tag they can't type.

Signs you've found your gamertag

  • It's free on Xbox, PSN and Steam.
  • Friends can spell it after hearing it once.
  • It fits on a leaderboard.
  • You'd still use it in five years.

Do you make gamertag generators? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on gamertags

Let the generator throw out dozens of ideas, then be strict: short, readable, nothing personal and free on every platform you care about.

If you're on PlayStation, treat the free ID change as precious. Use it once, on a tag you've lived with for a few days, not the first one that made you laugh.
