To flip an image in Canva, click it, click Flip on the toolbar above the editor, then choose Flip horizontal or Flip vertical. The detail people trip over: Canva says text, shapes, frames, charts, empty grids and grouped elements can't be flipped.
Flipping an image sounds trivial until you need it. A photo where the person looks out of the frame instead of into your text, a product shot facing the wrong way, a graphic that needs to mirror its twin on the other side of the page. A quick flip fixes all three.
In Canva it's a single button, but there are a few things it won't flip, and that's where most people get stuck. Here's the route from Canva's help centre, plus the difference between flipping and rotating, which people mix up all the time.
Flipping an image in Canva, step by step
- Open your design in the editor.
- Click the image, graphic or video you want to turn around.
- Click Flip on the toolbar above the editor.
- Choose Flip horizontal to flip it sideways, or Flip vertical to flip it upside down.
Flip horizontal gives you a mirror image, like looking at the photo in a mirror. Flip vertical turns it top to bottom. If you don't like the result, flip it again and it returns to how it was.
Flip horizontal or flip vertical in Canva: which one do you need?
Most designs only need the horizontal version. It's the one for changing which way a person, product or arrow points. Vertical flips are rarer, and mostly useful for reflections or patterns, for example turning a graphic upside down to make a mirrored shadow underneath.
One thing to watch with mirrored photos: any writing in the picture will read backwards. A shop sign, a logo on a T-shirt or a book cover looks wrong once it's flipped, so check the small details before you commit.
What you can't flip in Canva
This catches people out. Canva's help says text, charts, empty grids, frames, shapes and grouped elements can't be flipped. If the Flip button is missing or does nothing, one of those is probably why.
- Grouped elements: ungroup them, flip the pieces, then regroup.
- Images inside frames or grids: the flip belongs to the picture, so try selecting the image inside the frame.
- Text: it doesn't flip, so any mirrored words need a different approach, such as turning the whole piece into an image first.
Those are my suggestions rather than Canva's, so test them on a copy of your design. The part Canva states plainly is the list of things that can't be flipped.
Flipping several images at once in Canva
Hold Shift while selecting to work on several elements at once, as Canva's help says. Click the first image, hold Shift, click the others, then use Flip as normal. It's a time-saver for a row of product photos that all face the wrong way, though remember that grouped elements can't be flipped, so select them individually.
Flipping versus rotating an image in Canva
These two get confused, but they do different jobs. Flipping mirrors the picture. Rotating turns it round a point without mirroring it. Canva's help gives these options for rotation:
- Drag the rotate handle outside the selected element's border left or right.
- For an exact turn, select the element, click Position on the toolbar, and enter a value under Rotate.
- For images inside grids or frames, click Crop on the editor toolbar and drag the Rotate slider.
The help page also says rotating elements isn't supported in Canva Docs. If you've flipped something and it still looks off, a small rotation is often the missing piece.

| What you want | What to use in Canva |
|---|---|
| Mirror the picture left to right | Flip, then Flip horizontal |
| Turn the picture upside down as a mirror | Flip, then Flip vertical |
| Tilt it by a small angle | Drag the rotate handle |
| Turn it by an exact angle | Position, then enter a value under Rotate |
Flipping images in Canva for small business graphics
Mirroring is a quiet way to make a layout work harder. Facing a model towards your headline pulls the eye to your message. Flipping every second photo in a carousel gives the set rhythm without extra design work. I'd keep a short checklist before posting: does any lettering in the photo look backwards, and does the subject still look natural?
If your pictures come from an AI tool, my guide to creating and editing images with ChatGPT explains what it can produce, and a flip in Canva afterwards is an easy tweak. For a wider look at the tool itself, there's my Canva review with who it suits.
If the Flip button isn't showing in Canva
- Select the element first, since the toolbar only shows options for what's selected.
- Check it isn't one of the things Canva says can't be flipped, such as text, shapes, frames or a group.
- For video, look for an error icon on it. Canva's help points you to its video playback article if one appears.
- If the toolbar looks cramped, widen the window so every button is visible.
Button positions change between app versions, so if Flip sits somewhere different on your screen, Canva's help centre will have the current layout.
