To copy your own Instagram profile link in the app, go to your profile, tap Share profile under your bio, then tap Copy link. The link is now on your clipboard, ready to paste into WhatsApp, an email, your website or anywhere else. On a computer, open your profile in a browser and copy the address from the address bar.
Your profile link never changes unless you change your username. It's simply Instagram's web address followed by a slash and your username, so if you ever can't find the button, you can type it out yourself.
Worth knowing before you share it: if you change your username, your old link stops pointing to you. Anyone who saved it, and anywhere you pasted it, will no longer reach you, and it could end up pointing to someone else if they take your old username. Update your link everywhere the same day you rename.
Copy your profile link on iPhone or Android
These steps match Instagram's Help Centre for the phone apps. If a label looks different on your phone, search the app's settings for the word "share".
- Open Instagram and tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Share profile, just below your bio.
- Your profile card appears. Below it, tap Copy link.
- Paste the link wherever you need it by pressing and holding in a text box and tapping Paste.
The same screen gives you three other choices. Share opens your phone's share menu so you can send the link straight to an app. Download saves your profile card as a video or QR code image. Add to story puts your card in your Instagram story.
Copy your profile link on a computer
Profile cards are only in the iPhone and Android apps, so on a laptop you'll use the browser instead.
- Open Instagram in your web browser and log in.
- Click your profile picture on the left to go to your profile.
- Click the address bar at the top of the browser. It will show your profile address.
- Copy it with Ctrl+C on Windows or Cmd+C on a Mac.
Want your QR code on a computer too? From your profile, click Settings at the top, then QR code. You can change its colour there.
Every way to share your profile, compared
| Method | Where | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Copy link | Share profile in the app | Messages, emails, bios on other sites |
| Share | Share profile in the app | Sending straight to WhatsApp or another app |
| QR code | Share profile in the app, or Settings on a computer | Business cards, posters, events, shop counters |
| Download | Share profile in the app | Saving your card to print or post |
| Add to story | Share profile in the app | Asking your followers to share you with friends |
| Address bar | Browser on a computer | Quick copying while you work |
| Your username | Anywhere | Saying it out loud, on a podcast or a call |
Use your profile QR code
Your profile card includes a QR code that anyone can scan with their phone camera to land on your profile. It's the easiest way to share your account in person, because nobody has to spell your username.
- Go to your profile and tap Share profile.
- Tap anywhere on the screen, or the button at the top, to customise the code.
- Choose Colour, Emoji or Selfie to change its look.
- Tap Download to save it to your phone, ready to print or add to a design.
Instagram notes you can't log in with a QR code, so if a stranger asks you to scan theirs to "verify" your account, it's a scam. Close it and walk away.
What shows on your profile card
Instagram builds the card from your profile: your username, QR code, name, profile picture or avatar, pronouns, links and up to three lines of your bio. If something on the card looks out of date, edit your profile and the card updates with it.
If your account is private
You can copy and share your link on a private account in exactly the same way. Here's what someone sees when they open it, according to Instagram's Help Centre.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Anyone, on or off Instagram, can see your profile photo, name, username and bio.
- Only your approved followers can see your photos and videos.
- Everyone else sees a Follow button and has to wait for you to accept their request.
So if you're putting your link on a business card or website, a private account is a dead end for new customers. If that's you, it might be time to rethink your settings. For links that go the other way, from Instagram out to your other pages, see my comparison of link in bio tools for Instagram and TikTok.
Where to put your profile link
- Your email signature, so every message you send leads people to you.
- Your website footer and contact page.
- Your Facebook profile or Page, which is easier still if you link Facebook to Instagram.
- Your LinkedIn contact info, YouTube channel description and other social bios.
- Printed materials, using the QR code rather than the link.
- Message templates for customers, so they can find your latest work.
If you want to send people to a particular story rather than your whole profile, that works a little differently. Here's how to copy and share a link from an Instagram story.
Why the Share profile button might be missing
- You're looking at someone else's profile. The Share profile button sits on your own profile page.
- Your app is out of date. Update Instagram and restart it.
- You're on a computer. Profile cards only work in the phone apps; use the address bar method instead.
- Instagram says the profile card isn't available to everyone yet. If it's missing, type the link out yourself using your username.
My verdict
Tap Share profile, then Copy link. That's the quickest route, and it takes about as long as reading this sentence. Save your QR code to your phone too, so you've always got it ready when someone asks how to find you. And if you change your username, update your link everywhere straight away, because your old one won't follow you.
