To clear your Facebook search history, tap the search bar without typing, choose Edit or See all beside your recent searches, then tap Clear searches and confirm. To remove one search, tap the cross or three dots beside it. The suggestions you see while typing are predictions, not your history.
Facebook remembers what you search for, and it shows your recent searches every time you tap the search bar. That's handy when you're looking up the same group or friend again, but less handy when someone's looking over your shoulder, or when you share a laptop with family or colleagues. If you research competitors or customers from your own profile, a tidy search history is also a sensible bit of professional housekeeping.
Facebook's help pages say you can view all your past searches in your activity log and clear your recent searches. Facebook's help pages describe where the history lives, but the exact button names come from the app itself and change between versions, so treat the labels below as a guide.
Where Facebook keeps your search history
- Recent searches. According to Facebook's help pages, if you click the search bar without typing anything, you'll see a list of your past searches.
- Activity log. Facebook says you can view all your past search queries in your activity log, which is the full record rather than just the latest few.
- Search predictions. The suggestions that appear while you type aren't your history. Facebook's help page explains that they're predicted results based on popular searches on Facebook.
That last point matters. If you clear your history and still see suggestions while typing, nothing's gone wrong. Those suggestions come from what's popular, not from what you searched.
Clearing Facebook searches on a computer
Menus vary by version, but the route usually looks like this:
- Click the search bar at the top left of Facebook without typing anything.
- In the recent searches box, click Edit. This opens your search history in the activity log.
- Click Clear searches to remove the whole list, then confirm.
To remove a single search rather than everything, use the options button (three dots) beside that search in the list and choose to delete it. Facebook has a help article titled Delete a search from your Facebook activity log that covers this.
Wiping search history in the Facebook app
- Tap the search icon at the top of the app.
- Under your recent searches, tap See all or Edit, depending on your version.
- Tap Clear all (or Clear searches) and confirm.
You can also tap the small cross beside one search to remove just that one. If you prefer to go through the activity log, open your profile, tap the three dots, choose Activity log and look for Search history.
Facebook's help article on Manage Activity says that to manage content with Manage Activity in your activity log, you need the Android, iPhone or Facebook Lite app. So if a bulk option isn't on your computer, try the app.
What clearing Facebook search history does and doesn't do
| Clearing searches will | Clearing searches won't |
|---|---|
| Remove the list of recent searches you see in the search bar | Stop suggestions from appearing while you type |
| Remove past searches from your activity log view | Clear activity from other apps and websites that share data with Meta |
| Give you a clean list next time you tap search | Stop Facebook searching from working normally |
Activity from other apps and websites is a separate control. Facebook covers it in its help article Disconnect your past activity off Meta technologies, which has nothing to do with the searches you type into Facebook.
Can other people see your Facebook searches?
Your search history lives in your activity log, which is your own record. People often worry that searching for someone sends them a notification. It doesn't, and I've explained exactly why in my guide to whether Facebook tells people you've searched for them.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
The real privacy risk is a shared device. If a partner, child or colleague uses the same phone or laptop with your profile still logged in, they can tap the search bar and see your recent searches. Clearing the list helps, but logging out of shared devices helps more.
Search history habits for small business owners
I spend a lot of time on Facebook looking up groups to join, competitors' Pages and potential partners. If you do the same, a few habits keep things tidy:
- Clear your searches after a research session if you're about to hand your laptop to someone else or share your screen in a meeting.
- Use your recent searches as a shortcut when you're working through a list. Clear them once you've finished.
- Keep a note of groups and Pages you want to revisit somewhere other than Facebook search, so clearing the history doesn't lose them.
If finding groups is the main reason you search, my walkthrough of how to search for specific groups on Facebook will save you a lot of trial and error. And if your search history includes people you've tried to connect with, here's how to see the friend requests you've sent on Facebook.
If the clear searches button isn't there
- Update the Facebook app, as older versions can hide the option.
- Try the app instead of the browser, since Facebook says Manage Activity needs the Android, iPhone or Lite app.
- Open Activity log from your profile and look for Search history in the filters.
- Check you're logged in to the right profile if you switch between more than one.
Frequently asked questions
Does clearing my Facebook search history delete it for good?
It removes the searches from your recent searches and your activity log view. Facebook's help pages don't go into what happens on its own systems, so I won't guess.
Why do I still see suggestions after clearing my searches?
Facebook says the list you see while typing is search predictions, based on popular searches on Facebook, not your own history.
Can I delete just one Facebook search?
Yes. Use the cross or the three dots beside that search. Facebook has a help article called Delete a search from your Facebook activity log.
Does someone know if I search for them on Facebook?
Facebook doesn't send a notification when you search for someone. Your searches show in your own activity log.
Is clearing searches the same as clearing off-Facebook activity?
No. Activity from other apps and websites is a separate control in Facebook's settings.
