Facebook Link History: Where to Find It, Clear It or Turn It Off

Facebook link history is a list of the links you've tapped on Facebook and the websites you've visited in Facebook's in-app browser over the past 30 days. To see it, open the Facebook app, tap Menu, then Settings and privacy, then Link history, where you can reopen a link, remove one or clear them all.

It's only in the Facebook app for Android and iPhone, not on a computer, and it only works while a setting called enhanced browsing is on. Here's where to find it, what it records and what it's used for.

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap Menu.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Link history.
  4. Scroll through the links. Tap one to revisit that page.

If you can't see the option, update the Facebook app first. Meta's help page says that's the fix to try when the setting doesn't work.

That Messenger gap matters if you're hunting for a link someone sent you in a chat. It won't be in link history, so search the conversation instead.

  • One link: tap Remove next to it, then tap Clear.
  • Everything: tap Clear all in the top right, then tap Clear.

Once a link is cleared, it's gone from the list and you can't see it in link history again.

Link history is one feature of enhanced browsing, a setting Meta says helps you browse and shop more efficiently in its in-app browser. It's turned on when you sign up for Facebook. While it's on you also get features like the price history of a product you're viewing.

This is the part worth knowing before you decide whether to keep it. Meta says in-app browsing information, like the pages you visit, is used to improve and personalise your experience across Meta technologies, including the ads you see.

Turning it off doesn't remove everything. Meta says you may still see browser features that use your activity on Facebook itself, such as an option to message a business from the in-app browser. It also doesn't cover information other businesses share with Meta through its Business Tools. You can switch enhanced browsing off in the in-app browser settings or in your Facebook settings.

Other things you can do in the in-app browser

  • Open in your phone's browser: tap Options in the top right, then Open in external browser.
  • Save a website: tap Options, then Save, and pick a collection or create a new one.
  • Share it: tap Share at the bottom.
  • Check the business behind an ad: tap Options, then More info, to see details like a phone number or email, or message them, if the business has a Facebook Page.

Facebook checks links with its security systems and shows you what it finds at the top of the page:

What you seeWhat it means
Green lock next to the name or URLSecure connection, so details you enter are encrypted
Grey name or URL with no symbolNot secure, so anything you type, such as a password, isn't encrypted
Red triangle, or a red or grey warning screenSuspicious. Meta recommends not visiting pages with a red warning screen

Clearing in-app browser data

Link history isn't the only thing the in-app browser keeps. To clear the rest:

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  1. Tap any link in the Facebook app to open the in-app browser.
  2. Tap Options, then Go to Settings.
  3. Tap Clear next to Your Browsing Data.
  4. Change your autofill settings with the sliders, or tap Contact Info or Payment Info to edit what's saved.

This only clears data from the in-app browser. For the app's cache and storage on your phone, see how to clear your Facebook cache. If you want a copy of what Facebook holds on you before you clear anything, here's how to download your Facebook data.

My verdict

Link history is handy when you've lost an article or product you tapped on last week, and clearing it takes two taps. If you'd rather your in-app browsing didn't shape your ads, turn off enhanced browsing, accepting that link history goes with it. And for anything sensitive, tap Options and open the link in your phone's own browser instead.

Frequently asked questions

Where is link history on Facebook?

In the Facebook app, tap Menu, then Settings and privacy, then Link history. It's only available in the app for Android and iPhone.

How long does Facebook keep link history?

Link history shows links you've tapped and websites you've visited in the in-app browser in the past 30 days.

Does Facebook link history include Messenger links?

No. Meta says links visited in chats on Facebook Messenger aren't saved to link history.

How do I clear my Facebook link history?

Open Link history, then tap Remove and Clear for one link, or Clear all and then Clear to remove everything.

Why can't I see link history on Facebook?

Link history only works when enhanced browsing is turned on, and only in the Facebook app for Android and iPhone. Meta suggests updating the app if the setting doesn't work.
