To change your wallpaper on iPhone, open Settings, tap Wallpaper, then Add New Wallpaper. Choose Photos, Photo Shuffle, Emoji, Color or a featured set, tap Add, then pick Set as Wallpaper Pair for both screens or Customize Home Screen to give the Home Screen its own colour, photo or blur.
Your iPhone has two wallpapers, one behind the Lock Screen and one behind your apps, and Apple treats them as a pair. Once that clicks, changing them is quick. You can set the same picture on both, give the Home Screen something calmer so your icons are easier to read, or let a set of photos rotate on their own.
Setting a new wallpaper from Settings
- Open Settings and tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Pick a source along the top, such as Photos, Photo Shuffle, Emoji or Color, or scroll to a featured set like Nature.
- Adjust the picture if you want, then tap Add.
- Tap Set as Wallpaper Pair to use it on both screens, or Customize Home Screen to give the Home Screen something different.
If you can't see an option you're after, such as Weather or Astronomy, Apple says to scroll down and tap Get below the one you like.
Giving the Home Screen its own look
When you tap Customize Home Screen you get three simple choices. Tap a colour for a plain background, tap the photo button to use a different picture, or choose Blur to soften the Lock Screen image so your apps stand out. I'd go for blur or a plain colour if you've got a busy photo, because icon labels are much easier to read on a quiet background.
Your wallpaper choices at a glance
| Choice | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Set as Wallpaper Pair | Same image on Lock Screen and Home Screen | A clean, matching look |
| Customize Home Screen | Different colour, photo or blur behind your apps | Readable icons over a busy picture |
| Photo Shuffle | Rotates through photos On Tap, On Lock, Hourly or Daily | Family, travel or product shots |
| Featured sets | Apple's ready-made designs such as Nature | A quick change with no editing |
Switching wallpaper straight from the Lock Screen
You don't have to go into Settings at all:
- On the Lock Screen, touch and hold the screen to open your wallpaper gallery.
- Swipe left or right to a wallpaper you've already created and tap it.
- Or tap the Add button to create a new one.
If the gallery won't open with Face ID, Apple's fix is to touch and hold the Lock Screen again and enter your passcode.
Rotating photos with Photo Shuffle
Photo Shuffle is my favourite option for a phone you look at all day. In Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper, choose Photo Shuffle, then pick categories such as People, Nature or Cities, or an existing album. Choose how often it changes: On Tap, On Lock, Hourly or Daily. You can also tap Select Photos Manually if you want a tight set, say your best product shots or photos from a recent event.
Letting Photos suggest a wallpaper
If you're short of ideas, the Photos app makes suggestions using your favourite people and pets. Open Photos, tap Collections, swipe up and tap one of the options below Wallpaper Suggestions.
The 3D effect only shows on one screen
Here's the detail people miss. On iPhone 12 or later with iOS 26, Apple lets you turn some photos into a 3D spatial wallpaper from the Spatial Scene tab. But whichever option you pick afterwards, Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen, only the Lock Screen shows the 3D effect. Apple also says only certain photos are eligible, typically ones with good lighting and a clear separation between the subject and the background. So if a photo won't go 3D, it's usually the picture, not your phone.
The same goes for portrait shots versus wide ones. A tall photo of a person against a plain wall usually works far better than a crowded group shot, and you can pinch and drag to reposition the image before you tap Add. If the subject ends up hidden behind the clock, nudge the picture down a little and try again.

Changing wallpaper automatically with a Focus
If you use a Work Focus, you can link it to a Lock Screen so the wallpaper changes when the Focus does. Apple says that when you switch to that Focus, your wallpaper switches automatically. I like a plain, calm wallpaper for work hours and a family photo in the evening. It's a small nudge that helps me switch off.
Deleting wallpapers you don't use
Old wallpapers pile up in the gallery. To clear one, touch and hold the Lock Screen to open the gallery, swipe to the wallpaper, swipe up on it and tap the trash icon. Apple's guide confirms this removes it from the gallery.
My verdict
Set a wallpaper pair with a blurred Home Screen and you'll have a phone that looks good and stays readable. Try Photo Shuffle if you've got a strong library of pictures. Don't spend ages chasing the 3D effect on a photo that isn't eligible. If you'd like your photos doing more for you, my list of free photo editing apps for iPhone is a good place to start, and my guide to making a sticker on iPhone turns your favourite shots into something useful.
