To change the font in Squarespace 7.1, open the Site styles panel and click Fonts to pick a new font pack, which changes fonts across your whole site. To fine-tune, click the arrow next to Fonts and edit Headings, Paragraphs, Buttons or Miscellaneous, choosing a font, weight and size, then click Save.
Squarespace is known for beautiful typography, and changing your fonts is one of the quickest ways to make a template feel like your own brand. The system works a little differently from other website builders, because it's built around font packs rather than picking fonts one by one. Once you understand that, it's quick. Here's how to change fonts site-wide, style each kind of text, and find a specific font.
Check your version first
Squarespace's help centre explains that these font options apply to version 7.1 sites, while version 7.0 sites have different font settings. Most sites built in recent years are on 7.1. If your style menus don't match the steps below, you're likely on 7.0.
How Squarespace fonts are organised
| Category | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Headings | Text formatted as headings and title text |
| Paragraphs | Body text in text blocks and other content |
| Buttons | Text on buttons |
| Miscellaneous | Everything else, such as content details and labels |
Every site uses a font pack that sets all four categories at once. Squarespace says font packs use Google Fonts, which helps you keep a consistent brand across platforms.
Change your font pack
- Open the Site styles panel.
- Click Fonts to see recommended packs, or click the arrow next to Fonts and choose All Font Packs.
- Filter by Sans-serif, Serif or Mixed.
- Click a font pack to preview it on your site.
- Click Save when you find one you like.
This is the fastest way to transform your site's personality, and the preview lets you see it on your own content before committing.
Fine-tune each type of text
- Open Site styles and click the arrow next to Fonts.
- Use + or - to change the base size.
- Click Headings, Paragraphs, Buttons or Miscellaneous.
- Choose the font, style, weight, line height, letter spacing and size.
- Click Save.
The base size trick most people miss
Here's the setting that saves the most time. Squarespace explains that all text on your site scales relative to the base size. So if your text feels a touch too small everywhere, don't resize every heading and paragraph separately. Nudge the base size up with the plus button and everything grows in proportion, keeping your hierarchy intact.
Use a specific Google or Adobe font
- In Site styles, click the arrow next to Fonts.
- Click the category you want to change.
- Open the dropdown under Font.
- Type the name in Search all fonts, or click Additional Fonts to browse Adobe Fonts.
- Click the font, then Save.
Squarespace's collection includes 600 Google fonts plus Adobe Fonts, but it notes that not every Google Font is in its library. If yours isn't there, Squarespace also lets you upload custom fonts.
Style one area differently
Want your form labels or cookie banner to use a different style? In the Fonts panel, click Assign Styles, find the feature, click its text, and choose a style category or set a custom style. Use this sparingly; it's for the odd exception, not for redesigning every page.
Changing text colour
Font settings don't include colour. Squarespace explains that to change text colour, you change your site-wide or section colours, or use the text toolbar inside a text block. Keep colours consistent and readable, with dark text on light backgrounds for body copy.
Choose fonts that work for business
- Stick to two fonts: one for headings and one for body text.
- Make sure body text is easy to read at a normal size on a phone.
- Use weight and size, not extra fonts, to create emphasis.
- Match the font to your brand's personality, such as classic, modern or playful.
Squarespace warns that fonts can render differently on different devices, such as Windows and Mac, or iPhone and Android, so check your site on more than one. Fonts on older 7.0 sites
If you're on version 7.0, font settings vary by template, so the panel won't match these steps exactly. You'll still find font options in the site styles area, but what you can change depends on your template. If you find yourself fighting the limits, it may be time to look at moving to 7.1, where every site gets the same flexible font controls.
Test before you commit
Font pack previews show on your own pages, so click through a few before saving: your homepage, a long blog post and a page with buttons. A font that looks elegant in a big heading can be tiring to read in a long paragraph, and the only way to know is to see it on your real content.
My verdict
Open Site styles, click Fonts and pick a font pack to change fonts site-wide. Then fine-tune Headings, Paragraphs, Buttons and Miscellaneous, and use the base size to scale everything together. Search for a specific Google or Adobe font if you need one, keep it to two fonts, and check the result on your phone.
