To cancel Amazon Prime, go to Your Amazon Prime Membership, select Update, cancel, and more, then select Cancel Membership. If you and the people you share Prime with haven't used any benefits in the current paid period, Amazon refunds the full membership fee for that period.
Here's the catch most people miss. Ending Prime doesn't end everything you pay for through Prime. Amazon's cancel page says subscriptions on Prime Video, like Paramount+, will continue once your Prime membership ends. So if you added channels inside Prime Video, cancel those separately or you'll keep seeing charges after Prime has gone.
Cancel, pause or end a free trial: which one you want
| Option | What happens, as of October 2026 | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| Cancel Membership | Prime ends and you forgo benefits. Full refund if nobody used Prime this period, otherwise a part refund | Paid members who signed up with Amazon |
| End trial and benefits | The free trial stops before it turns into a paid plan | Free trial members |
| Pause for one month | No bill at the end of your cycle, then Prime restarts on its own | Prime Monthly plans only |
| Pause for up to a year | No bill until you resume by hand at the then current rate | Prime Monthly or Annual plans |
| Cancel through Google or another company | Cancel in Google Subscription services or with that company | Anyone who joined through a third party |
How to cancel Amazon Prime step by step
- Sign in and go to Your Amazon Prime Membership.
- Select Update, cancel, and more.
- Select Cancel Membership, forgo benefits. On a free trial, select End trial and benefits instead.
- Follow the prompts until Amazon confirms the cancellation.
- Check Memberships and Subscriptions for anything still running, such as Prime Video channels.
If the cancel option won't work for you, Amazon's route is the Customer Service homepage: select Something else under Can't find what you're looking for?, then I need help with something else.
When you get your Prime fee back
Amazon splits refunds into two cases. Paid members who haven't used their benefits get a full refund of the current membership period, and Amazon processes it in three to five business days. The switch-membership page adds the second case: if you or your invited household members have used Prime during the paid period, Amazon reimburses the fee pro rata, based on the remaining full months of that period.
Monthly members should know one more rule from the same page. If you cancel a monthly Prime membership, you can only sign up again after the month you've already paid for. You'll find that date under Next Payment in your Prime membership settings. If you want a monthly membership ended immediately, Amazon says to contact customer service.
Pausing Prime instead of cancelling
If you won't use Prime for a while, a pause stops the next bill without losing your setup. Amazon won't bill you at the end of your current billing cycle, and you can resume at any time at the then current rate for your plan. Your photos will be where you left them when it resumes. Two limits: you don't get Prime benefits while paused, and subscriptions tied to Prime end when billing is paused.
You set it up from the Membership Management section on Prime Central. A monthly plan can pause for one month and then auto-resume. Monthly and annual plans can pause for up to one year and resume by hand. Leave it paused for more than 365 days in a row and Amazon cancels the membership automatically. You can also cancel a pause you've scheduled.
You can't pause if you joined through a third party, have a Prime Video only subscription, Prime Business or Student Prime, are on a free trial or discounted offer, or are on the Prime Shipping only plan.
Free trials and app sign-ups
New members can try Prime free for 30 days, with the same delivery, shopping, Prime Video and Prime Gaming benefits as paid members. Amazon doesn't charge you for the trial, but you're moved to a paid plan automatically when it ends, so end it before then if you don't want to pay. Signing up for a trial needs a current, valid credit card; checking accounts, prepaid credit cards and a Corporate Line of Credit can't be used.
Joined Prime through the Amazon shopping app on Android? Amazon says those members manage the subscription through Google Subscription services, so that's where you cancel. If your Prime membership is attached to another company's service, contact that company.

What you lose when Prime ends
Amazon's plan comparison shows what full Prime includes beyond delivery: Prime Video and Prime Video Channels, Amazon Music for Prime members, Prime Gaming, Amazon Photos, Amazon Kids+, Prime Reading, Amazon First Reads, Books with Audible Narration, free titles at Audible and the ability to share benefits with your household. If you only want the delivery side, Amazon lists a Prime Shipping plan with the same shipping and shopping benefits but none of the digital ones. It's available for a limited time only to eligible customers.
If you share Prime through Amazon Family, think about who else is affected. An Amazon Family can include two adults, up to four teens and up to four children, all living at the same address, and the organiser must share a payment method. You can remove someone from Manage Your Amazon Family at any time. Members can leave and rejoin your Family, but they must wait 12 months before joining a different one.
Should you cancel Amazon Prime?
I'd pause rather than cancel if you're on a monthly or annual plan and simply don't need it for a few months, because you skip the bills and keep your setup. I'd cancel straight away if nobody in your household has touched a Prime benefit this period, since that's when the full refund applies. Either way, check your Prime Video channels first. If you're weighing it up on cost, here's what Prime costs on each plan, and if you're leaving for good, these Amazon alternatives are worth a look.

Paid members who haven't used their benefits get a full refund of the current period, processed in three to five business days. If benefits were used, Amazon reimburses the fee pro rata for the remaining full months.
