How to Become a Nail Technician: Program, State Exam and Pay

To become a nail technician in the US, you complete a state-approved nail technician or cosmetology program and then pass a state exam to get your license. Depending on your state, you may also need to be at least 16 or 18 and have a high school diploma or equivalent, so check your state licensing agency first.

Every state licenses nail technicians, but the rules aren't identical. The useful detail most people miss is that a license from one state can sometimes move with you.

This guide uses the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook page for manicurists and pedicurists, read on 26 October 2026. BLS uses that job title for nail technicians.

Nail technician pay and jobs at a glance

MeasureBLS figure
Median pay (May 2025)$17.19 an hour, $35,760 a year
Lowest 10 in every 100 earned less than$13.90 an hour
Highest 10 in every 100 earned more than$24.10 an hour
Jobs in 2025201,800
Projected growth 2025 to 20359%, much faster than average
Openings each yearAbout 21,900 on average

Those pay figures are as of October 2026, from the May 2025 BLS wage survey.

The route in, step by step

  1. Check your state licensing agency's rules, including the minimum age and whether you need a high school diploma.
  2. Choose a state-approved nail technician or cosmetology program. Your state licensing agency can give you the list of approved programs.
  3. Complete the program, which usually mixes classroom learning with hands-on training.
  4. Pass the state exam for licensure.
  5. Start work in a nail salon, spa or hair salon, or set up on your own once you're licensed.

The detail people miss: your license can travel

Under state reciprocity agreements, licensed manicurists and pedicurists may be able to get a license in another state without completing another program or passing that state's exam. If there's a chance you'll move, ask your state board which states it has agreements with before you train. It could save you repeating the whole process.

Where nail technicians work

Personal care services, mostly salons and spas, employ 76% of nail technicians. Self-employed workers make up most of the rest, at 23 in every 100.

Employer typeShare of jobs, 2025
Personal care services76%
Self-employed workers23 in every 100

A small number make house calls and offer mobile services, though BLS says these aren't widely available yet. Self-employed nail technicians often set their own schedules. Most technicians in personal care services earned the same median as the job overall, $17.19 an hour as of October 2026, so where you work matters less than how many regular clients you build. That's the number to focus on in your first year.

What the job is like

  • A lot of sitting, often for long periods.
  • Working with chemicals, so gloves and masks are common.
  • Full-time work for most, although part-time work is common too.
  • Schedules that often include evenings and weekends, and some technicians work more than 40 hours a week.

If you plan to run your own chair or salon, the admin side matters as much as the nails. Our guide to salon software covers booking and payments, and these ChatGPT prompts for nail technicians help with social posts and client messages.

Is it a good career to get into now?

BLS projects 9% growth from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the 3% average. The demand comes from nail services such as mini-sessions, which are quick, low-cost manicures, and mobile manicures and pedicures offered outside the salon. With about 21,900 openings a year, there's room for new technicians.

How to stand out once you're licensed

Licensing gets you in the door, but clients choose technicians they trust to be careful and consistent. Keep your hygiene routine visible, build a portfolio of your work, and learn the services that are growing, since BLS links demand to quick sessions and mobile services. If you want to work evenings and weekends, that's when many clients are free, and it's where a new technician can fill a diary fastest.

Questions to ask before you enrol

Programs vary by state and by school, so ask these before you pay for anything:

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Is the program approved by my state licensing agency? If it isn't, it won't count toward your license.
  • Does it prepare me for the state exam, including any practical part?
  • Is it a nail technician program or a full cosmetology program, and which one does my state require for the work I want to do?
  • How much of the time is hands-on training rather than classroom learning?
  • If I move, which states recognise this license through reciprocity?

The answers tell you whether the program gets you licensed quickly or leaves you needing more training later. A full cosmetology program covers more than nails, which can suit you if you want to offer other services too.

My verdict

Nail technician is one of the quickest licensed careers to get into: a state-approved program and a state exam, with no degree. Pay is modest, at a median of $17.19 an hour, so most of the upside comes from building a client base or working for yourself, as 23 in every 100 technicians already do. Before you enrol, check your state's age and education rules and ask about reciprocity if you might move.
