How to Become a Mechanic: Training, Certification and Pay

To become a mechanic, you either complete a program in automotive service technology at a high school, community college or technical institute, or start as a trainee or helper and learn on the job. In the US, if you'll touch vehicle air conditioning for pay, you must be certified under Section 609 of the Clean Air Act, and many employers also want industry certifications.

Mechanics, or automotive service technicians, inspect, maintain and repair cars and light trucks. It's a trade you can enter without a degree, and the work keeps changing as hybrid and electric vehicles arrive. Here's the route from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the US Environmental Protection Agency and the UK's National Careers Service, all read on 26 October 2026.

Step by step

  1. Take useful classes early. BLS points to high school courses in automotive repair, electronics, computers and maths.
  2. Choose your training route. A program in automotive service technology leads to a certificate or associate's degree. Some are run by manufacturers or dealers and focus on one make.
  3. Or start on the shop floor. You can enter as a trainee technician, a technician's helper or a lubrication worker and learn from experienced mechanics, though it takes longer.
  4. Get EPA refrigerant certification. BLS says the EPA requires every technician who buys or works with refrigerants to be certified.
  5. Add industry certifications. They cover areas such as brakes, automatic transmissions and electrical systems, and usually need experience plus an exam.
  6. Specialize. Brakes, engine performance, electrical work or a single manufacturer can all set you apart.

The Section 609 rule, in plain English

This is the certification people forget until a customer's A/C stops working. The EPA says anyone who repairs or services a motor vehicle air conditioning system for consideration, meaning payment or bartering, must be trained and certified under Section 609 of the Clean Air Act by an EPA-approved program. To be certified, you're trained by an approved program and pass a test.

The EPA's approved list includes ASE (the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence), the Mobile Air Climate Systems Association (MACS) and Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service. It's a practical credential to collect early, because it shows an employer you can take on A/C work from day one.

Where mechanics earn the most

BLS breaks median pay down by employer, as of October 2026:

Employer typeMedian annual wage
Automobile dealers$59,920
Automotive mechanical and electrical repair$49,630
Automotive parts, accessories and tire retailers$45,700
Other automotive repair and maintenance$35,730

Dealers employ 32% of mechanics and pay the most. That's the insight worth acting on: manufacturer and dealer training programs lead straight into dealer jobs, so if you know which brand you'd like to work on, look for that maker's program first. The lowest 10% of all mechanics earned less than $34,660, while the top 10% earned more than $81,790.

In the UK: motor mechanic

  • College: courses in light vehicle maintenance and repair, or a T Level in Maintenance, Installation and Repair, before applying for a trainee role.
  • Apprenticeship: the Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship, which usually takes 2 to 3 years.
  • Breakdown companies: some large breakdown organisations run their own training academies.
  • Armed forces: you can train as a vehicle mechanic in the British Army.
  • Hybrid and electric: courses such as electric and hybrid vehicle system repair let you specialise early.

Skills that make a good mechanic

  • Methodical diagnosis instead of guessing and swapping parts
  • Comfort with computer diagnostics and electronics
  • Clear records of tests and repairs
  • Explaining a fault to a customer without jargon

The cost nobody mentions: your own tools

BLS notes that service technicians typically own their hand tools, such as wrenches, pliers, sockets and ratchets. That's a real start-up cost for a new mechanic, so ask employers whether they offer a tool allowance or let you build your kit over time. Your personal toolbox then travels with you from job to job.

Electric vehicles are changing the job

BLS says some technicians now focus mainly on electric vehicles, working on battery performance, regenerative braking and electric motor efficiency, and that technicians must follow safety procedures for high-voltage systems. Modern cars also rely on electronic sensors for braking, transmission and accident avoidance, so electronics skills are no longer optional. If you're starting now, choose a program or apprenticeship that includes hybrid and electric training.

Diagnostic work is where the job is heading. BLS describes diagnostic technicians who use a car's onboard diagnostic system, scan tools and multimeters to find faults in engine management, fuel, ignition and emissions systems. If you enjoy solving puzzles more than swapping parts, that's a specialism worth aiming for.

My verdict

Mechanics is a steady, hands-on trade with real openings every year, and you don't need a degree. My advice: get a structured program or apprenticeship rather than drifting in as a helper, collect the Section 609 certification early, and aim for a dealer or a specialism if pay matters to you.
