How to Become a Customs Officer in the US or UK

To become a customs officer in the US you apply to be a customs and border protection officer, a federal law enforcement job where many new hires start with a high school diploma. In the UK the role sits with Border Force: you'll need at least 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 including English and maths, you must be over 18 and a UK citizen, and you'll pass security, medical and fitness checks.

Customs officers are the people who check passports, search bags and cargo, and decide what's allowed into the country. The job title changes depending on where you are, so it's worth knowing what to search for before you start applying.

I've built this guide from two official sources read as of October 2026: the O*NET OnLine profile for customs and border protection officers, run for the US Department of Labor, and the National Careers Service profile for Border Force officers. It's a careers guide, not legal advice on immigration or customs law.

What the job is called and where you'd work

United StatesUnited Kingdom
Job titleCustoms and border protection officerBorder Force officer
Where you workPorts of entry: airports, seaports and land crossingsBorder posts, ports and airports
Main checksPeople, cargo, baggage and vehiclesPassports, passengers, luggage and vehicles
Entry levelMedium preparation (O*NET Job Zone Three)5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4, or an assistant officer route

O*NET lists sample job titles people in this work report, including customs inspector, customs officer, canine enforcement officer, import specialist and US customs and border protection officer. If you see any of those on a vacancy, it's the same family of work.

The US route, step by step

  1. Check the education bar. O*NET asked people in the job what a new hire needs. 39% said a high school diploma or equivalent, 27% said a bachelor's degree and 14% said some college with no degree.
  2. Build relevant experience. O*NET places the job in Job Zone Three, which means medium preparation and some previous work-related experience. Military, security and law enforcement backgrounds are common starting points.
  3. Apply through the federal hiring process. It's a federal law enforcement job, so expect background checks and a long gap between applying and starting.
  4. Train for the frontline. Once you're in, you'll learn to examine documents, inspect cargo and apply customs and immigration law at a port of entry.

What a US customs officer does

O*NET's task list shows how much of the job is about judgement. The core duties are to:

  • examine visas and passports, and interview people to decide whether they can enter the country
  • inspect cargo, baggage and personal items for compliance with customs rules
  • find and seize contraband and undeclared goods, along with the vehicles, aircraft or boats carrying them
  • detain people who break customs or immigration laws and arrange legal action
  • explain the rules to travellers, shippers and manufacturers
  • work with other law enforcement agencies on investigations and prosecutions

You won't find a separate pay line for this job on O*NET: it shows wage data for police and sheriff's patrol officers instead, so check the grade and pay on the actual federal vacancy before you apply.

The UK route: Border Force

The National Careers Service sets out three ways in, and you don't need a degree for any of them.

  • Apply directly as an officer. You'll need at least 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4, including English and maths, or equivalent.
  • Start as an assistant officer. Join the Civil Service as a Border Force assistant officer, then apply for an officer post when vacancies open.
  • Do an apprenticeship. The Public Service Operational Delivery Officer Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship can take up to 1 year and 6 months. You'll usually need 2 or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 4, including English and maths.
  • Take a college course. A public services course can build some of the skills, although it isn't a direct entry route on its own.

The UK checks you'll have to pass

This is where a lot of applications stop. To work for Border Force you'll need to:

  • be over 18
  • be a UK citizen
  • have lived in the UK for the last 5 years
  • pass enhanced background checks and security checks
  • pass a medical check and have a good level of fitness
  • have a full driving licence

The 5-year residence rule catches people who've spent time abroad, so check it before you put hours into an application.

Training and progression in the UK

You'll get continuous training during your first 6 to 12 months, and once you've passed probation you'll take on the full responsibilities of the role. Day to day, you'll check travel documents, question passengers about why they're visiting, search people, luggage and vehicles, write case notes, and sometimes attend court as a witness.

With experience you can move up to senior officer or team leader, or into management and training. If you like the enforcement side and want to compare routes, read my guides on how to become an ICE agent for the US and how to become a police officer in the UK.

My verdict

Customs work is a solid route into law enforcement that doesn't need a degree on either side of the Atlantic. In the US, focus on experience and patience with federal hiring. In the UK, check the citizenship and residence rules first, then choose between direct entry with 5 GCSEs or the assistant officer route.
