How to Become a Probation Officer: Degree, Training and Pay

To become a probation officer in the US, you typically need a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, social science, psychology or a related field, then a training program run by your state, local or federal government, often followed by a certification test. In England, you complete the Professional Qualification in Probation (PQiP), which takes 15 to 21 months.

Probation work sits between the courts and the community. Agencies set strict entry checks, and many new officers spend their first months as trainees before the job is made permanent.

US figures come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook and the England route from the National Careers Service, both read on 26 October 2026. This is a careers guide, not legal advice.

Probation officer pay and jobs in the US

MeasureBLS figure
Median pay (May 2025)$66,270 a year, $31.86 an hour
Lowest 10 in every 100 earned less than$46,840
Highest 10 in every 100 earned more than$107,790
Jobs in 202593,700
Projected growth 2025 to 20353%, about as fast as average
Openings each yearAbout 7,900 on average

Those pay figures are as of October 2026. BLS counts probation officers together with correctional treatment specialists.

The US route, step by step

  1. Earn a bachelor's degree. Common fields are criminal justice, social science and psychology. Requirements vary by jurisdiction.
  2. Meet the entry checks. You may need to pass competency exams, drug testing and a criminal background check. A valid driver's license may be required, and some agencies require applicants to be at least 21.
  3. Complete government training. Most new officers finish a training program run by their state or local government or the federal government, after which they may have to pass a certification test.
  4. Work as a trainee. You may be required to work as a trainee for up to 1 year before you're offered a permanent position.
  5. Specialize if you want to. Some officers focus on caseloads such as domestic violence, substance abuse or juvenile offenders, with extra training for each.

The trainee year most applicants don't plan for

A job offer isn't always the finish line. BLS says new officers may work as trainees for up to 1 year before getting a permanent position. Build that into your plans, especially if you're moving for the job or leaving another career.

Volunteer or paid experience in the criminal justice field can help with some positions, and a master's degree in criminal justice, social work or psychology may help later when you go for supervisory roles.

Who employs probation officers

EmployerShare of jobsMedian pay, May 2025
State government51%$66,270
Local government46 in every 100$70,260
Healthcare and social assistance2 in every 100$45,830

So local government paid a higher median than state government, as of October 2026. The job often involves travel for home and employment checks and court hearings, court-imposed deadlines and time in high-crime areas. Some officers may be on call around the clock.

Becoming a probation officer in England

The National Careers Service describes three ways in:

  • University, then PQiP. A foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree in criminology, sociology, psychology or youth and community work, followed by the PQiP training programme of 15 to 21 months.
  • Start as a probation services officer. Build experience and on-the-job training, then apply to join PQiP.
  • Direct application. If you already hold a qualification at Level 5 or above, such as a social work degree with a probation option, you may be able to apply for a trainee probation officer job.

You'll be expected to have paid or voluntary experience with vulnerable people or people with challenging behaviour before you apply, for example through charities that support ex-offenders, and you'll need to pass enhanced background checks. The National Careers Service gives salaries of £35,000 a year for starters and £45,000 for experienced officers, as of October 2026.

What the work involves

  • Interviewing offenders before sentencing or parole
  • Making sure they attend supervision and rehabilitation programmes
  • Assessing risk and writing reports for courts, prisons and parole boards
  • Working with victims when prisoners are considered for parole
  • Helping clients into work, training, housing or treatment

Court time is a regular part of the job on both sides of the Atlantic. If you're curious what that feels like from the other side, this guide to what to wear to court for jury service gives a feel for the setting, and this look at court transcription jobs covers another way into the justice system.

My verdict

Probation work suits people who can be firm and supportive at the same time. In the US, get a relevant bachelor's degree, expect thorough checks, and plan for a trainee period of up to a year. In England, PQiP is the route, and starting as a probation services officer lets you earn while you work towards it. In both countries, experience with vulnerable people is what makes an application stand out.
