To add a watermark in Google Docs, go to Insert, Page elements, Watermark, choose Text or Image in the panel on the right, set it up and click Done. It sits behind your text and repeats on every page. If you can't see the option, switch the document from pageless to pages format first.
A faint DRAFT across a proposal, CONFIDENTIAL on an internal strategy document, or your logo sitting quietly behind a branded handout: watermarks tell readers what a document is before they read a word. Google Docs has a built-in watermark tool, so you no longer have to fake it with an image set behind the text.
Add a text watermark
- Open your document on a computer.
- Click Insert, then Page elements, then Watermark.
- In the panel on the right, click Text.
- Type your watermark, such as DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL.
- Optional: use the formatting options in the panel to change how it looks.
- Click Done.
Add an image or logo watermark
- Go to Insert, Page elements, Watermark.
- Click Image in the panel, then Select image.
- Pick your logo from Drive, Photos, a URL or your camera, or upload it from your computer.
- Optional: format it in the panel.
- Click Done.
For more control over an image watermark, right-click it, click Select watermark, and use Image options in the toolbar.
Text or image: which to use
| Watermark | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Text such as DRAFT | Proposals and documents still in review | Remember to remove it before the final version |
| Text such as CONFIDENTIAL | Internal plans and client documents | It labels the file, it doesn't lock it |
| Logo image | Branded handouts and guides | Keep it faint so the text stays readable |
The catch: pageless documents hide watermarks
Here's why so many people can't find the option. Google's help page says watermarks aren't available in documents that are in pageless format. Worse, if a document already has a watermark and someone switches it to pageless, the watermark simply disappears from view.
To fix it, click Format, then Switch to Pages format, or go to File, Page setup and choose Pages. The Watermark option appears in the Insert menu, and any existing watermark shows up again.
Why your watermark has gaps in it
This one's oddly specific but it comes straight from Google's help page. If parts of your watermark look cut out, it's usually because some of the text in your document has a background colour, such as highlighted text or text pasted from a website. The background colour sits on top of the watermark. Remove the background colour from that text and the full watermark shows through.
Edit or remove a watermark
- Edit a text watermark: right-click it, click Select watermark, then Edit watermark below it to reopen the panel.
- Remove it: open Insert, Page elements, Watermark and click Remove watermark at the bottom of the panel.
I'd make removing a DRAFT watermark part of your final checklist before sending anything to a client. There's nothing more awkward than a signed-off proposal that still says DRAFT on every page.
What a watermark won't do
A watermark is a label, not security. Anyone with edit access can remove it in a few clicks, and it doesn't stop people copying the text. If a document needs protecting, use Google Docs' sharing settings to control who can view, comment or edit, and share a PDF when people only need to read it.
Watermarks and PDFs
If you download a watermarked document as a PDF to send for review, open the PDF and check the watermark before you send it. It's a quick way to share a copy that's clearly marked as a draft, and readers can't remove it from a PDF as easily as from an editable Doc.
Watermark wording that works
- DRAFT for anything still being reviewed, so nobody forwards it as final.
- CONFIDENTIAL or INTERNAL for plans that shouldn't leave the team.
- SAMPLE for template previews or example reports you share with prospects.
- Your business name as faint text when you don't have a logo file to hand.
Keep it to one or two words. A long sentence behind the text is hard to read and makes the page look busy, and the point of a watermark is that people take it in at a glance.

Making a logo watermark look good
A full-colour logo at full strength fights with your text. Choose a simple version of your logo, ideally on a transparent background, and make it faint in the panel so the words on top stay easy to read. Then print one page or view it at normal size, not zoomed in, to check it doesn't look heavy. If your logo has fine detail, a text watermark with your business name is often cleaner.
What I'd do
Use a text watermark for drafts and confidential material, a faint logo for branded handouts, and keep your document in pages format so it doesn't vanish. Take DRAFT off before the final send. If you're building documents that need a polished finish, my guide to adding a header in Google Docs covers the other page elements that repeat on every page, and password protecting a Word document is the better route when a file needs locking rather than labelling.
