To access Google Drive, go to drive.google.com in any web browser and sign in with your Google account, the same one you use for Gmail. On a phone, install the Google Drive app and sign in. On a computer, you can also install Google Drive for desktop so your files appear in File Explorer or Finder like any other drive.
If you've got a Gmail address, you already have Google Drive, whether you've ever opened it or not. It's where Google keeps your documents, spreadsheets and uploaded files, and you can reach it from almost any device. Here are all the ways in, what you'll see once you're there, and how to fix the most common reasons you can't get to your files.
Three ways to get into Google Drive
| Where | How | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Web browser | Go to drive.google.com and sign in | Any computer, including someone else's |
| Phone or tablet | Install the Google Drive app and sign in | Viewing and uploading on the go |
| Your computer's files | Install Google Drive for desktop | Working with files like a normal drive |
Access Drive in a browser
- Open any web browser and go to drive.google.com.
- Sign in with your Google account email and password.
- You'll land on Home or My Drive, depending on your settings.
Using a shared or public computer? Open a private browsing window first, and sign out when you're done, so nobody else can get into your files after you.
Access Drive on your phone
Install the Google Drive app from the App Store or Google Play, open it and sign in. You can view files, upload photos and documents with the plus button, and share links straight from the app. Android phones often have the app already installed.
Access Drive from File Explorer or Finder
If you'd rather open Drive files without a browser, install Google Drive for desktop. Google says that once it's installed, you open File Explorer on Windows or Finder on a Mac and go to the Google Drive folder, where you'll find My Drive, Shared drives and other synced folders. One caution from Google: work or school accounts might not be able to use it, or your organisation might need to install it for you.
What you'll find once you're in
- New button, top left, to create or upload files and folders.
- Home, which Google says shows files you or others recently opened, shared or edited, plus files linked to upcoming meetings.
- My Drive, which holds files you upload or sync and the Docs, Sheets, Slides and Forms you create.
- Shared with me, for files other people have shared.
- Trash, for deleted files you can still restore.
Choose where Drive opens
Here's a small setting most people never touch. Google lets you choose whether Drive opens on Home or My Drive. Go to Settings and, under Start page, pick one. I prefer My Drive because I know where everything lives; Home is better if you mostly work on files people share with you.
Can't access Google Drive?
| Problem | Try this |
|---|---|
| Wrong account | Check the profile picture at the top right and switch accounts |
| You need access to a file | Use the Request access button and the owner gets an email |
| Work account blocked | Ask your administrator; your organisation controls access |
| Page won't load | Try another browser or a private window to rule out extensions |
| Forgotten password | Use Google's account recovery from the sign-in page |
The wrong-account problem is the one I see most. If you're signed in to a personal and a work Google account in the same browser, Drive may open the wrong one. Click your profile picture and switch, or use separate browser profiles for work and personal so each one always opens the right Drive.
Access files offline
If you'll be somewhere without internet, such as on a flight, set files up for offline use before you go. In the browser, Drive can make files available offline when you turn on offline access in Settings, and Drive for desktop lets you mark folders to keep on your computer. On your phone, open a file's menu in the Drive app and make it available offline. Then you can open it with no connection at all, and any changes sync back once you're online again.
Keep your account secure
- Turn on two-step verification on your Google account.
- Sign out of Drive on shared or public computers.
- Check Shared with me now and then and remove files you don't need.
- Review who has access to your important folders every few months.
Sharing what's in your Drive
Once you're in, sharing is simple: click a file or folder and select Share, then choose viewer, commenter or editor access. If you're tidying up before sharing, my guide to freeing up space on Google Drive helps, and transferring ownership in Google Drive is worth reading before a team member leaves.

My verdict
Go to drive.google.com and sign in with your Google account, install the app on your phone, and add Google Drive for desktop if you want your files in File Explorer or Finder. If you can't get in, check which account you're signed into first. It's the culprit more often than anything else, especially if you juggle work and personal accounts.
