How Much Does ChatGPT Cost for Business (And What You Get for the Money)

The short version: ChatGPT for business costs anywhere from £0 to £270+ per user per month depending on the plan and your usage volume. Most small businesses land on the £20/month Plus plan or the £25/user/month Team plan, but the right choice depends on whether you need shared workspaces, admin controls, or API access for custom builds.

I get asked this question at least twice a week by business owners who have heard ChatGPT mentioned at a conference or read a vague LinkedIn post about AI saving someone 10 hours a week. They want a straight number. So here it is, broken down well, with the bits most summaries leave out.

What are the ChatGPT plans for business and what do they cost?

OpenAI offers four main tiers relevant to businesses: Free, Plus, Team, and Enterprise. Free gives you GPT-4o access with limits. Plus costs $20/month (roughly £16 to £17 at current rates). Team costs $30/user/month billed monthly or $25/user/month billed annually, with a two-user minimum. Enterprise pricing is custom and negotiated directly with OpenAI, typically starting around $60/user/month but scaling based on contract size, seat count, and data processing volume.

Here is what each tier gives you beyond the price tag:

  • Free: Access to GPT-4o with daily message caps, no memory persistence guaranteed, no custom GPTs you can share with a team, limited to one user.
  • Plus: Higher message limits on GPT-4o, access to o3 and o4-mini reasoning models, DALL-E image generation, Advanced Data Analysis, custom GPTs. Still one user only. No shared workspace.
  • Team: Everything in Plus, shared workspace for your team, admin console, ability to create and share custom GPTs internally, conversations excluded from training by default. Minimum two seats.
  • Enterprise: Unlimited GPT-4o access, extended context windows (up to 128k tokens), SSO, domain verification, audit logs, higher API priority, formal data processing agreements for compliance purposes.

What does the API cost separately, and why does it matter?

The API is a completely separate pricing structure from the subscription plans above. You pay per token (a token is roughly 0.75 words). As of 2026, GPT-4o API pricing sits at approximately $2.50 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. For a business running a customer service chatbot that handles 500 conversations per day at roughly 500 tokens each, you are looking at around $375 in monthly API costs before any markup from the platform sitting on top.

This matters because a lot of businesses are sold "ChatGPT-powered" tools, whether that is a customer service widget, a CRM add-on, or a document summariser, and they pay the tool vendor without realising there is also an underlying API cost being passed through (often with a margin on top). Read the pricing page carefully before you sign anything.

Is ChatGPT Plus worth it for a solo business owner?

For most solo operators doing content, emails, proposals, and research, yes. At roughly £16 to £17 a month, Plus pays for itself if it saves you 45 minutes of work in the first month. I use it daily for drafting, editing, and pulling apart research papers, and I would estimate it saves me a minimum of five hours per week. That is not a marketing number, that is my actual tracked time over three months.

The honest catch: Plus has message limits on the most powerful models. If you hit the GPT-4o limit (which resets every three hours), it drops you to a lighter model automatically without much fanfare. For most solo users this is not a crisis. For anyone doing heavy daily processing, it gets irritating fast and you either need Team or a direct API setup.

What does ChatGPT Team cost a small business annually?

At $25/user/month billed annually, a five-person team pays $1,500 per year. A ten-person team pays $3,000 per year. That is roughly £1,180 and £2,360 respectively at current exchange rates. Billed monthly at $30/user/month, the same five-person team pays $1,800 per year, so the annual billing saves you $300 for five users.

What Team adds that really justifies the jump from Plus: shared custom GPTs mean you can build a brand-voice GPT once and every team member uses the same trained version rather than each person prompting from scratch. The admin console lets you see who is using it and how. Conversations are excluded from OpenAI's training data by default, which matters if your team is pasting in client contracts, financial data, or anything commercially sensitive.

What does ChatGPT Enterprise cost and who is it really for?

Enterprise pricing starts around $60/user/month but real-world contracts for mid-sized businesses often land between $40 and $100/user/month depending on seat volume and negotiated terms. OpenAI does not publish a fixed Enterprise price, which means you are in a sales conversation and the number is movable.

Enterprise is built for organisations that need a formal data processing agreement under GDPR or equivalent frameworks, SSO integration with existing identity providers, audit trails for compliance, and guaranteed uptime SLAs. If you are a 500-person professional services firm handling client data, Enterprise is the right conversation to have. If you are a 12-person agency, Team almost certainly covers your needs for a fraction of the price.

According to Forbes, large organisations using AI tools at scale are reporting productivity gains of 20 to 40 percent in knowledge worker roles, which reframes what even an Enterprise-level cost looks like when spread across genuine time savings.

What hidden costs do most ChatGPT pricing articles skip?

This is the bit I almost never see written about honestly. The subscription cost is the smallest part of the real cost for most businesses. Here is what adds up:

  • Prompt engineering time: Building good custom GPTs or system prompts for your specific business context takes time. A realistic investment for a small business setting up three or four well-built internal tools is 10 to 20 hours of skilled time. At a consultant rate, that is £500 to £2,000 before the tool saves you a penny.
  • Validation and review: ChatGPT makes things up. Anyone using it for anything client-facing needs a human check on the output. That check takes time. If you are saving three hours a week but spending one hour reviewing output, your net saving is two hours. Still good, but not the headline number.
  • Training your team: Research published by Harvard Business Review found that workers with low AI familiarity often use generative AI tools in ways that produce worse results than doing the task manually. Buying Team licences without any onboarding is a waste. Budget for training or onboarding support.
  • Switching costs if you outgrow it: If you start building workflows around ChatGPT's custom GPTs and then decide you need a different solution, you are rebuilding from scratch. Document your prompts and logic from day one.

How does ChatGPT pricing compare to Copilot and Gemini for Business?

Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 costs $30/user/month (on top of an existing Microsoft 365 subscription). Google Gemini for Workspace costs $20 to $30/user/month depending on tier. ChatGPT Team at $25/user/month is competitive, but the right choice is not purely about price. It is about where your team already works. If your business lives in Google Workspace, Gemini integration is frictionless. If you are a Microsoft 365 shop, Copilot sits inside the tools you already use. ChatGPT Team requires a separate tab, a behaviour change, and deliberate adoption. That context-switching has a real cost that does not show on any pricing page.

Should a small business pay for ChatGPT or work with someone who can set it up well?

The subscription cost is low enough that almost any business should have at least Plus. The question is whether you are getting value from it or just paying for a tool that sits underused. I have spoken to dozens of business owners who have had Plus for six months and are still using it like a slightly better Google search.

If you want to build custom tools, automate workflows, or integrate ChatGPT with your existing systems, it is worth talking to an AI consultant for small businesses before you start spending on development or API costs. Getting the architecture right at the start saves months of rebuilding.

The UK Information Commissioner's Office guidance on AI and data protection is also worth reading before you let a team of 10 start pasting client data into any AI tool, whether ChatGPT or otherwise. GDPR obligations do not pause because the tool is convenient.

What do real businesses spend on ChatGPT per year?

To give you something concrete: a three-person consultancy using Plus individually spends around £600 per year total across three accounts. A ten-person marketing agency on Team spends around £2,360 per year. A 50-person professional services firm on Enterprise might spend anywhere from £90,000 to £150,000 per year depending on their negotiated rate, which sounds steep until you consider that a single mid-level knowledge worker costs £40,000 to £60,000 in salary alone.

The ROI maths only works if people use the tool well. McKinsey's State of AI research consistently shows that organisations reporting the highest AI value are those with structured adoption programmes, not just licence purchases. Buying seats is not a strategy.

Can you use ChatGPT for free for business purposes?

Technically yes. The free tier allows business use under OpenAI's terms of service. Practically, the free tier is too limited for any serious business use in 2026. Message caps on the most capable models, no custom GPTs you can share, no admin controls, and no data exclusion from training make it unsuitable for anything beyond light personal experimentation. I would not recommend running any client-facing work through a free account.

One thing worth noting: OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, was valued at $157 billion in a 2024 funding round, which gives you some confidence the product is not going anywhere overnight, but also signals that pricing is likely to move upward as the company scales toward profitability.

Frequently asked questions

How much does ChatGPT for business cost per month?

ChatGPT Plus costs $20/month per user (roughly £16 to £17). ChatGPT Team costs $25/user/month billed annually or $30/user/month billed monthly with a two-user minimum. Enterprise pricing is negotiated directly with OpenAI and typically starts around $40 to $60/user/month for larger organisations.

Is ChatGPT Team worth it for a small business?

For teams of two or more who are using ChatGPT regularly for work, yes. The shared workspace, custom GPT sharing, and default data exclusion from training make it meaningfully better than each person running their own Plus account. The annual plan at $25/user/month is a reasonable business expense for most teams.

Does ChatGPT charge separately for API use?

Yes. Subscription plans and API access are entirely separate. The ChatGPT Plus or Team subscription gives you access to the chat interface. The API is billed per token based on usage and is used when you are building custom tools or integrations. GPT-4o API costs approximately $2.50 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens as of 2026.

Is it safe to use ChatGPT for confidential business data?

On the free and Plus plans, your conversations may be used to train OpenAI's models by default. ChatGPT Team and Enterprise exclude conversations from training by default. For anything involving client data, financial information, or anything sensitive under GDPR, you should be on Team at minimum and read OpenAI's data processing terms alongside UK ICO guidance before use.
