How Many Views to Get Paid on YouTube? It Isn't Views

YouTube doesn't pay from a set number of views. You need to join the YouTube Partner Program first, which takes 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Long videos qualify on watch time, so how many views that takes depends on how long people watch.

This is one of those questions where the search box and YouTube's rules don't match. People type "how many views" because views are the number they can see. YouTube's payment gate is built on subscribers plus watch hours, or subscribers plus Shorts views, and it never mentions a plain view count for long videos at all.

The two routes into the Partner Program

RouteSubscribersSecond requirementTime window
Long-form1,0004,000 qualified public watch hoursLast 12 months
Shorts1,00010 million qualified Shorts viewsLast 90 days

You only need one route. The catch most people miss is that watch hours earned from Shorts in the Shorts Feed don't count towards the 4,000 hours, so a channel can't mix the two to get over the line.

Turning 4,000 watch hours into views

Here's the arithmetic I use with clients, and it's only an example: 4,000 hours is 240,000 minutes. If your average view lasts 4 minutes, that's about 60,000 views. If people stay for 8 minutes, you need about 30,000. If they drift off after 2 minutes, you're looking at roughly 120,000 views.

That's why two channels with identical view counts can be months apart on eligibility. Longer, more watchable videos get there with fewer views, and it's the first thing I'd look at if you feel stuck.

Long videos or Shorts: which route gets you paid sooner?

For most of the small businesses I work with, the long-form route is the more realistic one. A steady library of useful videos keeps adding watch hours for a year, while the Shorts route needs a huge burst of views inside three months and then keeps asking for it. If your Shorts are already flying, use them, but I'd still publish long videos alongside them so you're not relying on one feed.

What happens after you hit the numbers

  1. Turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google Account and have, or create, one AdSense for YouTube account linked in YouTube Studio.
  2. Apply from the Earn section of YouTube Studio and accept the base terms.
  3. Wait for the review. YouTube says a decision typically comes in about 1 month, and it checks the channel as a whole against its policies.
  4. If you're turned down, you can appeal within 21 days, or keep uploading and re-apply after 30 days. After a repeat rejection the wait is 90 days.
  5. Once accepted, choose your modules: Watch Page ads pay you 55% of net ad revenue and Shorts Feed ads pay 45% of your Creator Pool share.

Getting paid for Shorts is about to get harder

Joining YPP through Shorts already asks for 10 million qualified views in 90 days. From February 1, 2027, YouTube is adding the same bar to the monthly payout itself: to earn your share of Shorts ad revenue for a month, you'll need at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. A Shorts-only channel that scrapes into YPP and then slows down could find itself monetized on paper and paid nothing in practice.

Things that quietly reset your progress

  • Going quiet. YouTube may switch off monetization on channels that haven't uploaded or posted to the Posts tab for 6 months or more.
  • Spam subscribers. YouTube removes subscribers it identifies as spam, and the figure in Analytics runs about 48 hours behind while it checks.
  • Fan funding needs more than YPP. Memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks also need you to be at least 18 and to live somewhere the feature is offered.

My honest advice

Stop watching the view counter and start watching average view duration. The long-form route rewards videos people finish, and that's within your control in a way that a viral spike isn't. If you're building on Shorts, plan for the 2027 rule now rather than being surprised by it. For more on the rules around length and eligibility, read whether video length affects YouTube monetization, and before the first payment lands it's worth knowing how YouTube income gets taxed.

Frequently asked questions

How many views do you need to get paid on YouTube?

There's no view count for long videos. You need 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, to join YPP.

Do Shorts views count towards the 4,000 watch hours?

No. YouTube says watch hours from Shorts views in the Shorts Feed don't count towards the 4,000 qualified public watch hours threshold.

How long does YouTube take to approve monetization?

YouTube says it typically makes a decision in about 1 month, though delays are possible when application volumes are high.

What if my YPP application is rejected?

You can appeal within 21 days or re-apply after 30 days. If you've been rejected before, you can try again after 90 days.

Do I need 1,000 subscribers for both routes?

Yes. Both the long-form and the Shorts route into the YouTube Partner Program ask for 1,000 subscribers, plus either watch hours or Shorts views.

Is there a new Shorts payout rule?

Yes. From February 1, 2027, a channel needs at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days to earn Shorts ad revenue for that month.
