The Google Workspace free trial lasts 14 days and covers up to 10 users. You have to set up a payment method before you can use it, but Google doesn't charge you until the trial ends, and if you cancel within the 14 days you pay nothing. Add an 11th user and the trial ends early for everyone.
For a small business moving email onto its own domain, this trial is a sensible way to test Gmail, Meet, Drive and Calendar with your real team. The details that trip people up are around billing, user numbers and the domain, so here they are in one place.

| Question | What Google says |
|---|---|
| Length | 14 days |
| Users | Up to 10 |
| Payment method | Required before you can use Workspace, charged only after the trial |
| Cancel during the trial | No charge |
| Adding an 11th user | Ends the trial and starts paid service for all users |
| Switching editions | Unused trial days carry over to the new edition |
| Plan limit | Business Starter, Standard and Plus can be bought for up to 300 users |
The 10-user rule
Google's help page says that when you add an 11th user, you're prompted to end your trial and your paid subscription begins for all users. So if you're a team of 12, test with your core 10 first and add the rest once you've decided.
Switching edition mid-trial
Google gives a clear example: switch editions on day 10 and the last 4 days of the free trial apply to the new subscription. You don't get a fresh 14 days, so pick the edition you're most likely to keep early on. Storage is often the deciding factor: Google's pricing page lists 30 GB of pooled storage per person on Business Starter, 2 TB on Business Standard and 5 TB on Business Plus.
How to check how many days you have left
- Sign in to the Google Admin console with an account that has billing management rights.
- Go to Billing, then Subscriptions.
- Next to your Google Workspace subscription, you'll see the days remaining until paid service starts.
What happens at the end of the trial
If you've already added payment details, you don't need to do anything: your paid subscription starts automatically. If you haven't set up billing, Google says your account is suspended until you do. And if you also never verified your domain, the account can be deleted.
Signed up on your phone?
Google runs a slightly different trial for sign-ups on Android or iOS, where billing is handled through Google Play or the iPhone Settings app instead of the Admin console. Cancel there, not in Workspace.
How to cancel during the trial
Google says that if you cancel within the 14-day trial, you won't be charged. The steps depend on how you signed up:
- Signed up with a business email address: follow Google's Cancel Google Workspace steps in the Admin console.
- Signed up with a personal Gmail address: follow the separate Cancel Google Workspace for Gmail accounts steps.
- Bought a domain during sign-up: you can keep managing that domain in the Admin console after the trial ends.
After cancelling, you can create a new Workspace account with the same email address or domain later, although Google says you may wait up to 24 hours for the domain to become available again.
Do you need a domain for the trial?
Not always. Google's help page says you don't need to buy or verify a domain if you're using a Business edition with your business email. That's handy if you want to try Meet, Drive and Docs with your team before you move email at all. If you do want email on your own domain, verify it early in the trial so you aren't racing the deadline on day 14.
One regional note: Google says that if you use NetBanking in India as your main payment method, you have to make a prepayment during setup to verify your account, and Google applies the prepayment to your account.
The domain detail nobody mentions
If you bought a new domain while signing up, Google says you can move it to another Google account, but moving it to a different domain host only becomes possible 60 days after purchase, because of ICANN rules. If you're only testing, consider connecting a domain you already own instead of buying a new one inside the trial.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If you're a sole trader, the 10-user cap won't matter, but the billing step still will. Use a card you check regularly so the first charge after day 14 doesn't surprise you.
Make the 14 days count
- Move one real mailbox over first and use it for a full working week.
- Run your normal team meeting on Meet instead of your usual tool.
- Share a client folder in Drive with the permissions you'd use day to day.
- Check whether your existing apps connect, such as your CRM. My list of CRMs that work well with Gmail is a good starting point.
If cost is the question, read whether Google Workspace is free before you start. Many people only need a free Gmail account.
My advice
Google Workspace's trial is fair and simple, but it isn't a no-card trial, so set a reminder for day 12. Keep your team at 10 or fewer, choose the edition you expect to keep on day one, and don't buy a new domain inside the trial unless you're sure. If it fits how your team already works, paying from day 15 won't feel like a surprise.
