How Does Klarna Work? Pay in 30 Days, Pay Over Time and Credit

Klarna lets you buy now and pay later: you choose Klarna at checkout in partnered stores, or pay with the Klarna Card or a one-time card wherever Visa is accepted, then pay in full later or spread the cost. There's no fixed spending limit, because Klarna makes a new approval decision every time you pay with it.

Here's the detail most people get wrong about credit. Klarna doesn't run a credit check when you sign up, prequalifying never affects your score, and Klarna only reports to credit bureaus for its Monthly Pay over time loans. Even then, Klarna says the shared data is currently visible only to you, so other lenders can't see that payment history yet.

Who can use Klarna

  • A resident of the United States or its territories
  • At least eighteen, or of legal age in your state
  • With a valid card or bank account
  • With full legal capacity to enter into a contract
  • Giving true and correct personal details
  • Able to receive security codes by text message

A Social Security Number and a linked card or bank account may be needed for some products, including Pay in 4 and other credit-based payment options.

The ways to pay later

OptionHow it works, as of October 2026
Pay in 30 daysGet your order first, then up to 30 days to pay with no interest and no fees; extending the due date in the app costs a fee
Pay over timeSpread the cost over up to 24 months at an agreed interest rate, with a credit check when you apply
Pay in fullPaid straight away; it doesn't affect your purchase power and isn't reported to credit bureaus

If your order qualifies for Pay in 30 days, the option shows at checkout. When the store ships your order, Klarna emails your payment details and the purchase appears in the Klarna app, where you can pay early if you like.

  1. Select Pay over time in the store's checkout.
  2. Choose your timeline and the agreed interest rate.
  3. Follow the steps to complete the application.
  4. Get an instant approval decision.
  5. Complete your purchase.

Klarna emails your payment plan once the store ships. The first payment is due one month after the store processes your order, then on the same date each month until the statement's paid, and you'll see upcoming payments in the Payments tab. Pay over time is issued by WebBank, member FDIC, in partnership with Klarna.

How much Klarna lets you spend

Each approval looks at your payment history with Klarna, what you currently owe, the total in your cart and how well Klarna can identify you. Purchase power in the app estimates what you might spend on your next Pay later purchase, based on your Klarna history, what you owe and your external credit history, and it updates in real time as you buy and pay. Pay in full purchases don't change it.

Prequalification works store by store. It's an estimate, not a guarantee, and the final decision still happens at checkout, which is why a prequalified purchase can be denied. You get up to 3 prequalification attempts at each store within 48 hours.

Credit checks and credit reporting

What you doCredit effect, as of October 2026
Sign up to KlarnaNo credit check
Use prequalificationNo effect on your score, whatever the outcome
Apply for a Klarna Credit CardSoft check, invisible to other lenders, no score effect
Apply for Pay over timeA credit check is performed
Open, pay or miss a Pay over time loanShared with TransUnion and Experian
Pay in full purchases and Klarna Card activityNot shared with credit bureaus

When Klarna does run a credit check, it verifies your identity from the details you gave and looks at your credit report to judge your creditworthiness. Those checks are run by TransUnion, and Klarna points you to TransUnion directly with questions about your score or the data used. Paying late or not paying can hurt your creditworthiness with Klarna and stop you using its payment methods.

Where you can and can't use it

Look for the pink badge at partnered stores, use Klarna at stores that take Apple Pay, or use a Klarna card wherever Visa works. The store directory in Klarna shows where it's accepted. You can't use it for utility bills or rent, government bills and fines, or online gaming and gambling.

To pay in a physical store, open Accounts & cards in the app, tap In-store, choose a store and create a digital card for your phone wallet, then tap your phone on the reader. Stores not listed in the app may decline the purchase. Your payment card needs at least a quarter of the order amount available, Amex and prepaid cards aren't accepted, and Android users need Google Pay set up.

Avoiding late fees

  1. Tap your Profile in the top-left of the Home screen.
  2. Go to Notifications.
  3. Find Purchases and payments.
  4. Turn on the Payment due notifications toggle.

If your order hasn't arrived, or you've sent it back, report it in the app to pause your invoice, so you're not paying for something you don't have.

My verdict on how Klarna works

I'd use Pay in 30 days when you want to see an order before paying for it, because there's no fee if you pay on time. Pay over time is a loan with interest and a credit check, so read the terms the way you'd read any loan. Switch on payment reminders the day you sign up. If you're comparing options, here's Klarna against Afterpay, and PayPal's version works differently: see how PayPal Pay in 4 works.

Frequently asked questions

Does Klarna do a credit check?

Not when you sign up. Klarna runs a credit check when you apply for Pay over time, and a soft check, which doesn't affect your score, when you apply for a Klarna Credit Card.

Does Klarna report to credit bureaus?

Only for Monthly Pay over time loans, which are shared with TransUnion and Experian. Pay in full purchases and Klarna Card activity aren't shared.

Is there a spending limit on Klarna?

There's no predefined spending limit. Klarna makes a new automated approval decision each time you pay.

Does Pay in 30 days cost anything?

No. There's no fee to use Pay in 30 days, though extending the due date costs a fee.

What can't I buy with Klarna?

Utility bills, rent, government bills and fines, and online gaming or gambling.
