PayPal Pay in 4 splits a purchase of 10 to 2,000 dollars into four interest-free payments: a quarter at checkout, then three more every two weeks. PayPal charges no late or sign-up fees, but approval is per purchase, it isn't offered in Missouri, and your bank can still charge you if a repayment bounces.
Pay in 4 is the buy now, pay later button you'll see at PayPal checkout on a lot of US stores. It's simpler than most people expect, and it has fewer fees than the big standalone apps. But there are a few rules that catch shoppers out, mostly around when it's offered and what happens to the approval if your checkout gets interrupted.
How Pay in 4 works, payment by payment
| What happens | When | What PayPal says |
|---|---|---|
| Down payment | At checkout | One-fourth of the total, taken the same day |
| Second payment | Two weeks later | Taken by autopay |
| Third payment | Four weeks after purchase | Taken by autopay |
| Final payment | Six weeks after purchase | The plan lasts a little over 6 weeks in total |
Autopay is switched on automatically when you buy. You can repay from a debit card, credit card, confirmed bank account or your PayPal Balance, although PayPal says Balance can't be used for autopay.
Who can use it and on what
- Cart value between 10 and 2,000 dollars.
- You're at least 18 with a PayPal account in good standing.
- You don't live in Missouri, where PayPal says Pay in 4 isn't currently available.
- The merchant and the items qualify. Some merchants, some goods and many recurring subscriptions are excluded.
PayPal may run a soft credit check when you apply. It says this won't affect your credit score, and the decision comes back in seconds. Not every application is approved, even if you've been approved before.
The fees: what PayPal charges and what your bank might
Here's the good news. PayPal says it doesn't charge sign-up, application, late or non-sufficient funds fees on Pay in 4. That's unusual: plenty of buy now, pay later products make their money from late fees.
The catch is the word PayPal. If a repayment comes out of your bank account and bounces, your bank can still charge you its own NSF fee. So a missed Pay in 4 payment can cost you money even though PayPal itself won't charge a fee. If your account is tight around a payment date, switch the repayment method to a card before it's due.
The approval only lasts for one shopping session
This is the one people don't expect. PayPal says your Pay in 4 approval is valid only for the session in which you got it. If you change payment method and don't switch back, or your internet drops, or the page times out, the approval can be lost and you'll have to apply again. If that happens, don't panic and don't assume you've been rejected. Start checkout again and reapply.
Why your PayPal activity shows the full amount
After you buy, your PayPal activity shows the whole purchase price under the merchant's name, not a quarter of it. That's because PayPal pays the merchant upfront and you then repay PayPal over six weeks. You'll also see the down payment taken the same day. It looks like you've been charged twice when you haven't.
Pay in 4 vs Pay Monthly
| Pay in 4 | Pay Monthly | |
|---|---|---|
| Number of payments | 4 | 3, 6, 12 or 24 |
| Gap between payments | Two weeks | One month |
| Interest | None | Fixed APR from 0 to 35.99%, based on your credit |
| Autopay | Switched on at purchase | Optional |
If you can clear the cost within six weeks, Pay in 4 is the cheaper choice because it's interest-free. Pay Monthly is a loan with interest, and at the top of PayPal's range it costs a lot.
Buying in another currency
You can use Pay in 4 on purchases in any currency PayPal supports, but PayPal converts the total to US dollars before it gives you the loan, and its currency conversion charges apply. The conversion charge is built into the dollar total you repay, so check the converted amount before you agree.

How to use Pay in 4 at checkout
- Choose PayPal at the store's checkout and log in.
- If your cart qualifies, pick Pay in 4 from the Pay Later options.
- Read the loan agreement before you submit. PayPal links to it during the application and lets you download it.
- Get a decision within seconds. If approved, the down payment is taken straight away.
- Check the email PayPal sends with your plan details, and find the schedule later under Pay Later in the app.
Is Pay in 4 a good idea?
- Good fit: a planned purchase you could pay for today, spread over six weeks to smooth your cash flow.
- Good fit: when you want PayPal Purchase Protection on eligible transactions as well as the split payments.
- Poor fit: everyday spending like groceries, where it's easy to lose track of how many plans are running.
- Poor fit: anything you're buying because the four smaller payments make it feel cheaper than the full price.
My verdict
Pay in 4 is one of the fairer buy now, pay later options because there's no interest and no PayPal late fee. Use it for something you could afford today anyway, keep a card as the repayment method if your bank balance is unpredictable, and don't stack several plans at once. If you're comparing options, my checks on whether Klarna is legit and Snap Finance cover the alternatives, and what APR on a credit card means explains what you're avoiding.
