How the promo code tester works
- Shop at a participating retailer with the extension installed.
- Go to the cart or checkout page, wherever a promo code box appears.
- Click the blue 'try codes' button when the notification shows.
- Wait a few moments while it tests the codes; it applies the best one and shows the saving.
Sometimes the best available promotion is applied for you without clicking anything.
Price comparison and price drop alerts
The comparison feature is the one I'd use most. While you browse a product on Amazon, or search inside Capital One Shopping itself, it looks for better offers from other sellers and tells you if the same item is cheaper elsewhere. It also sends price drop notifications, and Capital One Shopping says these can even cover items after you've bought them, which is handy if the retailer you used offers price adjustments. Neither feature needs you to earn or spend rewards, so they're useful even if you never redeem a single eGift card.
How Shopping Rewards work
On partner sites, the extension prompts you to click Activate. Complete an eligible purchase after that and you earn Shopping Rewards, calculated on the subtotal of eligible items. Tax, shipping and other fees don't count. These rewards are separate from any points or cash back your credit card already gives you, so you can earn both.
Here's the bit to understand before you get excited: Capital One Shopping says Shopping Rewards are not equivalent to money and have no cash value. You redeem them for eGift cards from dozens of retailers, and that's it. There's no bank transfer or PayPal option.
How to make sure rewards track
- Disable other shopping extensions before you click Activate. Capital One Shopping says if another program interferes, it can't confirm or adjust your rewards afterwards.

What doesn't earn Shopping Rewards

Who can use it, and the small print
The full set of features is available for United States addresses, excluding territories such as Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Capital One Shopping says features may be limited elsewhere, with increased functionality in Canada, the UK and Australia.
- Phone verification: a VoIP number, including WhatsApp, Google Voice and other messenger numbers, can't be used to verify your account.
- Referrals: a referral bonus depends on your friend using the extension roughly weekly throughout their first 90 days. They don't have to buy anything.
- Tax forms: referral and sign-up bonuses count as non-transactional rewards, and heavy earners above the IRS reporting threshold are asked for a Form W-9 so a 1099-MISC can be issued.
- Ads With Benefits: the extension shows offers that keep it free, and there's no built-in switch to turn them off other than removing it.

Capital One Shopping is most useful as an automatic promo code tester and price checker; the rewards are a bonus you can only spend on eGift cards. Install it, turn off rival extensions, click Activate before you buy and stay on the page. Just don't treat a growing rewards balance as cash.
