On X (formerly Twitter), go to Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then Your posts or Content you see, depending on what you want to clear. For search history, open the search tab, tap the search icon, and select Clear all from recent searches. You cannot clear your entire account history in one go.
What clearing history on X means
When people ask how to clear history on X, they usually mean one of three things: search history, the posts you have seen in your timeline, or your own posted content. X does not have one single button that wipes everything. You need to go through separate settings for each type.
I think it helps to be clear on what you are trying to achieve before you start. If you want to stop seeing certain ads or topics, that is a different setting to clearing your search history. If you want to delete old tweets, that is a different process again.
I will go through each one step by step, so you can pick the bit that applies to you.
How to clear your search history on X
Your search history on X is the list of things you have typed into the search bar. This is the most common thing people want to clear, and it is also the simplest.
- Open X and tap the search icon (the magnifying glass).
- Tap into the search bar, even without typing anything.
- You will see a list of your recent searches appear below.
- Tap the small gear or settings icon near the top of that list.
- Select Clear all from recent searches.
- Confirm when prompted.
This removes the list of past searches from your account. It does not affect your posts, likes, or who you follow.
How to clear your viewing or browsing activity
X also keeps track of some of what you look at, which it uses to shape your timeline and recommend content. You can clear parts of this through Settings and privacy.
Go to Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then look for an option related to Content you see or Ads preferences. Within this section, there may be an option to clear certain interest or ad personalisation data.
I want to be plain about something here: X does not give you a single switch that erases every bit of behavioural data it has gathered on you. You can limit what is stored going forward and clear some existing data, but you cannot be certain every trace is gone instantly.
How to delete your own posts (tweets)
If what you want is to remove your own posting history, that is a separate job from clearing search or browsing data. There is no bulk delete button built into X for this.
- Go to your profile and find the post you want to remove.
- Tap the three dots menu on that post.
- Select Delete.
- Confirm the deletion.
You have to do this one post at a time through the official X interface. If you have thousands of old tweets, this becomes tedious quickly. Some people use third party tools to bulk delete, but I am not going to recommend specific ones here, since access and reliability change often and I cannot vouch for every tool's safety or compliance with X's rules.
How to clear your direct message history
Direct messages are stored separately from your public posts and search history. If you want to clear a conversation:
Open your Messages tab, find the conversation, tap and hold or use the options menu, then select Delete conversation. This removes it from your view. It does not necessarily delete it from the other person's inbox, since deleting on your side does not delete their copy.
There is no single setting to wipe all direct messages at once. You need to go into each conversation and delete it individually, the same way as with posts.
Clearing your history on the X app versus the website
The steps are broadly similar whether you are using the X app on your phone or the website on a desktop browser, but menu layouts differ slightly.
On mobile, you will usually find Settings and privacy by tapping your profile picture, then looking for the settings menu, often shown as a gear icon or listed under More.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
On desktop, look in the left hand navigation bar for More, then Settings and privacy. From there, the structure is the same: Privacy and safety, then the relevant sub-section for search, content, or data.
What you cannot do when it comes to clearing history on X
I want to be honest about the limits here, because I do not want to give you false hope.
You cannot permanently erase your account's entire history in one action. There is no master reset button for your activity on X. Clearing search history, adjusting ad preferences, and deleting individual posts or messages are the tools available, and you have to use them separately.
If your goal is a completely blank slate, the only way to achieve that fully is to deactivate or delete the account entirely, which is a much bigger decision and removes your presence from the platform altogether, not just your history.
A quick checklist before you start
Before you go through any of these steps, it is worth deciding exactly what you are trying to clear and why. That will save you time.
- Search history: use the search tab settings.
- Ad or content preferences: use Privacy and safety settings.
- Old posts: delete individually from your profile.
- Direct messages: delete conversations one by one.
Work through these in order, and you will cover most of what people mean when they ask how to clear history on X.

Frequently asked questions
Can I clear all my X history in one click?
No. There is no single button that clears everything at once. You need to clear search history, ad preferences, posts, and direct messages separately, through their own menus in Settings and privacy.
Does clearing search history delete my tweets?
No. Clearing your search history only removes the list of things you have typed into the search bar. Your posts, likes, and followers are not affected by this action.
How do I delete old tweets in bulk?
X does not offer a built in bulk delete tool. You have to delete posts one at a time from your profile using the three dots menu, then selecting Delete and confirming.
Will deleting a direct message remove it for the other person too?
No. Deleting a conversation only removes it from your own view. The other person will still have their copy of the messages unless they delete it themselves.
