X (Twitter) Profile Picture Size: 400x400, Under 2MB, No Animation

The Twitter profile image size X recommends is 400x400 pixels. Your photo has to be a JPG, PNG or GIF file under 2MB, and X doesn't support animated GIFs for profile photos, so a moving GIF won't play. Upload it from x.com or the official X app on iOS or Android, then click Apply, because X says your image won't save until you do.

Your profile photo is the tiny picture that sits next to every post, reply and DM you send. For a business owner it does more work than the header ever will, because it follows you around the platform. Getting the size right takes two minutes, and it stops the blurry, stretched or failed uploads I see on so many small business accounts.

X profile photo specs at a glance

SpecWhat X says
Recommended dimensions400x400 pixels
Shape to exportSquare, the same width and height
File typesJPG (JPEG), PNG or GIF
Animated GIFsNot supported for profile or header images
Maximum file size2MB

Content ruleProfile photos with nudity will be removed

That's the whole list from X's own help centre. There's no minimum size published, so don't go smaller than 400x400. A bigger square is fine as long as the file stays under 2MB, and X will display it at the sizes it needs.

Why 400x400 is the number to design for

X gives one recommended size for the profile photo and it's a square. If you upload a rectangle, X asks you to crop it to a square anyway, and you lose control of what gets cut. Start with a square at 400x400 or a larger square in the same shape, and you decide what stays in.

I'd keep the important part, usually your face or your logo mark, in the middle of the square with plenty of space around it. The photo shows very small in replies and notifications, so a busy photo with a group of people or a full logo with a strapline turns into a smudge. One face, or one simple mark, reads best.

How to change your X profile picture

  1. Sign in on x.com or open the X app on iOS or Android.
  2. Go to your profile.
  3. Click or tap Edit profile.
  4. Click or tap the camera icon on your profile photo and select Upload photo.
  5. Pick your square image, adjust the crop if X shows you one, then click Apply.
  6. Click or tap Save.

The Apply step is the one people miss. X's help centre says plainly that your image won't save until you click it, so if you close the window after cropping, you're back where you started.

When your profile photo won't upload

X lists the usual reasons a profile photo fails, and they're worth checking in this order:

  1. Check where you're uploading from. X says you must be on the web or an official app to upload a profile photo, so a third party scheduling tool may not be able to change it.
  2. Check the file type. It must be JPEG, GIF or PNG. A HEIC photo straight from an iPhone, or a WebP image saved from a website, needs converting first.
  3. Check the file size. The maximum is 2MB. Phone photos are often far bigger, so export a smaller copy.
  4. Check the dimensions. Use 400x400 pixels, or a larger square.
  5. Try a different or updated browser. X says the problem can come from the browser or computer you're using.
  6. Click Apply before you leave the editor.

If none of that works, try the X app on your phone instead of the browser, or the other way round. Swapping devices sorts out more upload problems than anything else I've tried.

The profile photo and header work as a pair

X's recommended header, which it also calls a banner, is 1500x500 pixels, and it uses the same file types with the same no animation rule. X also warns that parts of a header can be cropped on different monitors and browsers, with up to 60 pixels at the top and bottom at risk. Your profile photo overlaps the header on your profile page, so keep text and faces in the header well clear of the lower left area where the photo sits.

One more detail from X's help centre: when you first set up an account, you won't see the option to change your display name until you have a profile and header photo uploaded. So if you're setting up a new business account and can't find the name field, add both images first.

If you're also posting images, I've covered the sizes that work best in your feed in my guide to X image sizes for posts. And if you're tidying every profile at once, here's the LinkedIn profile picture size too.

Quick checklist before you upload

  • Square image, 400x400 pixels or a larger square.
  • Saved as JPG or PNG, or a still GIF.
  • File size under 2MB.
  • Face or logo mark centred, with space around it.
  • The same photo you use on LinkedIn and your website, so people recognise you.
  • Uploaded from x.com or the official app, with Apply clicked before Save.

My advice

Use one clear, well lit photo of your face if you're the brand, or a simple logo mark if the business is the brand, and use the same image everywhere you show up online. Export it as a 400x400 square under 2MB and you've met every rule X publishes. Don't use an animated GIF, because X won't play it, and don't forget to click Apply.
