Google Ads campaign types decide where your ads appear: Search puts text ads on search results, Display shows image ads on websites, Video runs on YouTube, Shopping lists products, App promotes apps, Demand Gen advertises in online feeds, Smart simplifies everything and Performance Max covers every channel from one campaign. Google says to choose based on your marketing goals, brand strategy and how much time you can invest.
Here's the catch. You can't change a campaign to a new campaign type once it's been created. If you pick Display and later want Search, you'll build a new campaign. So it's worth five minutes deciding before you click Create.
Google Ads campaign types compared
Here's how Google's help pages describe each type, as of October 2026.
| Campaign type | Where ads show | Best for | What you need first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search | Text ads on Google search results | Sales, leads or traffic from people actively searching | Text ads and keywords; no special files |
| Display | Image ads on websites, apps and Google-owned properties such as YouTube | Reach beyond search, and following up with past visitors | Images in the right sizes and file size |
| Video | Video ads on YouTube and other websites | Awareness, consideration, or conversions with the Drive conversions subtype | A video ad uploaded to YouTube |
| Shopping | Product listings on search results and the Google Shopping tab | Retailers selling product inventory, online or in a local store | A Merchant Center account with your products |
| App | Search, Play, YouTube, Discover and over 3 million sites and apps | Installs, in-app engagement and pre-registration | An app |
| Demand Gen | Online feeds | Advertising within feeds | Not covered on this help page |
| Smart | Google's simplified campaigns | Keeping setup simple | Not covered on this help page |
| Performance Max | All Google Ads inventory from one campaign | Conversion goals across channels, using Smart Bidding | Clear conversion goals and good creative assets |
How to choose by goal
Google starts every campaign with an objective, then guides you to the types that suit it. Pick the goal first and the right type usually follows.
- People already searching for what you sell: Search. It's the most direct way to drive sales, leads or traffic, and Google suggests leads if you have a longer sales cycle.
- Getting known before people search: Display or Video. Both can also follow up with people who've already seen your ads or visited your site, using your data segments.
- Selling a product range online: Shopping, or Performance Max with a Merchant Center data source.
- Driving app downloads or in-app actions: App, with its subtypes for App installs, App engagement and App pre-registration.
- Maximum reach with the least setup: Performance Max, where Google AI spreads your budget and bids across channels.
One renamed objective is worth knowing. For new campaigns, Awareness and consideration is now called YouTube reach, views, and engagements. Google says the objective itself hasn't changed.
The Video and App subtypes
Video and App campaigns each split into subtypes you choose at creation. Google lists six Video campaign types, including Drive conversions, which some people know as Video action campaigns; Video reach campaigns, which reach more unique users with bumper and skippable in-stream ads, or show your entire message with non-skippable in-stream ads; Get views, with skippable in-stream or in-feed ads; and Ad sequence, which tells a story across a series of video ads.
App campaigns use information from your app to optimise ads automatically, and if your account is eligible you'll see three subtypes. App installs focuses on downloads, App engagement gets existing users to act inside the app, and App pre-registration promotes an app before it releases on Google Play.
How to create a campaign
- In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon.
- Open the Campaigns drop-down in the section menu, click the plus button and select New campaign.
- Choose your campaign objective, then a goal. Click Add goal for more, or remove one you don't need.
- Select a campaign type. If you chose a goal, Google shows the best types for it.
- If the type has subtypes, choose one.
- Set up your settings, ad groups and ads on the next page, and fix any notifications before you publish.
If Performance Max is the only type you see, or it's missing, select Create a campaign without a goal's guidance. Google says that reveals every available campaign type so you can pick manually and set goals later. Performance Max only appears as an option when your objective is Sales, Leads, or Local store visits and promotions.
New users go through a shorter route. You click Start Now on the Google Ads homepage, add your business name and URL, link a Google Business Profile or YouTube channel if you have one, then choose a goal and budget, and Google points you to a campaign type before you add billing details.
What to do when you've picked the wrong type
Because the type is locked, you've got two options. For Search, Video and Shopping campaigns, you can change the Networks settings, which changes where ads can appear; for example, a Search campaign can be allowed to show on the Display Network. Go to Campaigns, click the campaign name, click Settings, expand Networks, make your change and click Save.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If you need a feature your campaign type doesn't offer, Google suggests creating a new campaign with the right type and importing your existing ad groups into it with Google Ads Editor. That saves rebuilding everything by hand.
My verdict on choosing a campaign type
For most small businesses I'd start with Search, because you're paying to reach people who are already looking, and it needs nothing more than text ads and keywords. Add Display or Video once you know what converts, and only hand over to Performance Max when your conversion tracking is solid. If you're still weighing up platforms, here's how Google Ads compares with Facebook Ads.
Picking the right campaign type is easier when you know which channels bring you customers. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement, AI automation and GEO, which is about getting your business seen and cited in AI answers. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
